The handpan has a culture out of all proportion to its size. There are perhaps a few hundred
serious makers worldwide and a player base measured in the tens of thousands, and yet there
are dozens of annual festivals on every inhabited continent, a fifteen year old forum with a
six figure post count, a Swiss copyright case that could reshape the whole instrument
category, and a genuinely unresolved argument about whether the thing is a musical instrument
or a healing tool.
Two threads run through this section. The first is that the community is unusually generous
and unusually welcoming, and that this is a real feature of the scene rather than marketing.
People hand strangers instruments worth thousands. Open stages take beginners. That is worth
knowing if you are hesitating about turning up somewhere.
The second is that the instrument attracts an enormous amount of lovely nonsense, and that
separating what is true from what is merely appealing is a service to everyone, including the
people who love it most. The questions on music therapy, sound baths, 432 Hz and wellbeing
below try to do exactly that: to be precise about what the research supports, honest that
some of it is thin, and warm about why the experience moves people anyway. The ordinary
explanations for why a handpan makes you feel better are interesting enough. They do not need
help from cymatics.
