BOD-08What is a good playing posture, and why does lap playing cause trouble over time?#

Short answer. Aim for a stacked spine, relaxed shoulders, and the instrument close enough that both hands reach every note without leaning. Lap playing tends to pull you into sustained forward flexion with a rounded lower back and a dropped head, and it is the duration and immobility that cause problems, not the position itself.Lap playing is the classic image of the instrument and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. The problem is what it quietly asks of you. Sitting cross legged on a flat floor tips most people’s pelvis backwards, which rounds the lumbar spine. The instrument sits low, so you look down at it, which puts the neck into flexion holding the weight of the head forward. The arms reach down and slightly out, so the shoulders round and the upper back stays flexed. Then you hold that shape, largely motionless, for 40 minutes because the playing is absorbing.
That combination (end range flexion, held statically, repeated daily) is what turns a comfortable position into a sore one over months. Individually none of it is dangerous. Cumulatively it is why long term lap players so often report lower back and neck complaints.
The fixes are unglamorous and effective.
Raise your hips. A firm cushion, a meditation stool or a folded blanket under the sitting bones tips the pelvis forward and lets the lumbar spine find its natural curve instead of collapsing. This one change does more than anything else on the list.
Raise the instrument. The higher it sits, the less you look down. A stand at or slightly above lap height, or simply a thicker cushion on your legs, reduces neck flexion considerably.
Tilt rather than crane. Tilting the far edge of the instrument down brings the layout into view without you bending your neck to see it. Ten to twenty degrees is where most players settle.
Move. The most underrated intervention. Change position every 20 minutes or so. Alternate cross legged, kneeling on a stool, sitting on a chair, standing at a tall stand. Variety beats any single perfect posture.
Check with a video, not a feeling. Everyone believes they are sitting upright. Film yourself from the side for thirty seconds. It is usually a surprise.
If sitting on the floor is genuinely uncomfortable for you, do not persist because it looks right. A chair without armrests, thighs roughly parallel to the floor, feet flat, and the instrument on a stand is a perfectly legitimate and often healthier setup.
BOD-09What stand height should I use, and how do I avoid neck strain?#
beginner
Short answer. Set the height so your forearms sit roughly level or angled very slightly downwards, elbows close to your sides, wrists near neutral, and so you can see the whole note layout with only a small tilt of the head. If you have to raise your shoulders or bend your wrists to play, it is wrong.There is no single correct number, because it depends on your torso length, your seat height, the diameter of the instrument and how much you tilt it. Work from the body rather than from a measurement.
Seated. Sit as you will actually play. Let your arms hang, then bring the forearms up until they are roughly horizontal. That is approximately where the rim of the instrument wants to be. Slightly lower is usually more comfortable than slightly higher, because a stand set too high forces the shoulders up and the wrists into extension, which is the most reliable way to develop a sore forearm.
Standing. Roughly waist height, adjusted so you are dropping into the instrument rather than reaching down to it. Standing changes your stroke: most players unconsciously hit harder because gravity is now helping, so check your dynamics on a recording the first few times.
Neck strain specifically comes from two things, and only one of them is height.
The first is looking down. The head weighs around five kilograms and the further forward you hold it, the more work the neck extensors do to keep it there. Raising the instrument and tilting it towards you both reduce how far you need to look down. So does learning the layout well enough to stop watching your hands, which is worth working towards for musical reasons anyway.
The second is holding still. A neck held in one position for 45 minutes gets sore even in a good position. Micro breaks matter more than perfect alignment: every 20 minutes, look up, roll the shoulders back, let the arms hang.
Two practical points about stands themselves. A wobbling stand makes you tense your whole upper body to compensate without noticing, so stability is an ergonomic issue as well as a safety one. And if your instrument has bottom notes, check where the contact points land; a support directly under a tuned bottom field will mute it. See PLA-02.
If you play a lot and can afford one adjustable stand rather than two fixed ones, take the adjustable one. Being able to change height between pieces is the easiest way to stop any single posture accumulating.
BOD-10How loud is a handpan in decibels, and is it a hearing risk?#
intermediate
Short answer. For a single acoustic handpan played by hand at normal volume, roughly 70 to 90 dB(A) at the player’s ears is a reasonable expectation, with hard strikes on a loud instrument going higher. That is around the level where duration starts to matter, but for typical practice sessions it is not a serious hearing risk. Treat any single number you see quoted with suspicion, including this one.Be sceptical about decibel figures for this instrument, because there is very little published measurement. Unlike orchestral instruments, drum kits and steelbands, the handpan has not been the subject of peer reviewed sound level surveys that we could find. Most figures circulating online come from phone apps, which are uncalibrated, weight and average differently, and are frequently out by ten decibels or more. So the honest answer is a range and a set of caveats.
Why the range is so wide. Sound pressure level depends on how hard you play (easily a 20 dB spread between a whisper stroke and a full strike), the instrument itself (large, thin, low pitched shells are much louder than small bright ones), the distance from your ears (levels fall roughly 6 dB per doubling of distance, and your ears are well under a metre away when lap playing), the room, and what you are measuring: peak, fast, slow, A weighted, C weighted, or an average over time. A percussive instrument has short peaks well above its average, and averaged levels are what matter for hearing risk.
For context, a full steelband is a genuinely hazardous environment: a 2004 study in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery by Juman, Karmody and Simeon measured levels consistently above 100 dBA at the core of the band, and found significantly worse hearing at 3, 4 and 6 kHz in steelband musicians than controls, with nine of the twelve players who had played for 20 years or more showing hearing loss against none of the seven with under ten years. A single hand struck handpan is nowhere near that, but the study is a useful reminder that tuned steel percussion can absolutely damage hearing when there is enough of it and enough hours.
The reference points that matter. NIOSH recommends a limit of 85 dBA averaged over eight hours, with a 3 dB exchange rate: 88 dBA for four hours, 91 dBA for two, 94 dBA for one. The WHO safe listening guidance uses 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week, and 90 dB for four hours a week. Put a typical practice session against those numbers and it is comfortably fine. Put six hours a day of loud playing, or a room full of handpans, against them and it stops being obviously fine.
If you actually want to know, borrow a calibrated sound level meter or a dosimeter rather than trusting an app.
BOD-11Is it more of a risk in a small room or when amplified?#
intermediate
Short answer. Yes to both, and amplification is the bigger one by far. A small hard room can add several decibels and a lot of unpleasant ring; a PA can put you into genuinely hazardous territory in a way an acoustic handpan never will on its own.Small rooms. In a reverberant space you hear the direct sound plus a great deal of reflected sound, and the total level at your ears is higher than the same instrument outdoors. A tiled bathroom, a small concrete practice room or a bare rehearsal space will measurably raise the level and, more noticeably, extend the decay so that notes pile on top of each other. The effect is usually a few decibels rather than a transformation, but the fatigue effect is disproportionate: hard rooms are tiring to play in long before they are dangerous. Soft furnishings, a rug, a curtain or simply playing somewhere else all help. If your practice space rings unpleasantly, the reason you feel wrung out after 40 minutes may be acoustic rather than musical.
Amplification. This is where the real risk lives, and it has nothing to do with the instrument. Once a handpan goes through a microphone or pickup into a PA, monitors or in ear system, the level at your ears is set by a gain knob, not by physics. Handpan players are particularly exposed here for two reasons. First, the instrument’s own acoustic sound is quiet, so on stage there is a strong temptation to push monitors hard to hear yourself over drums, bass or a crowd. Second, handpan is often paired with amplified low frequency material (loop pedals, sub heavy backing, didgeridoo, cajón through a PA) that masks the pan and drives you to turn it up further.
At a loud gig or a festival stage, the ambient level can sit anywhere from 95 to 105 dBA regardless of what you are playing. Against the NIOSH figures in BOD-10, 100 dBA gives you roughly 15 minutes before you exceed the recommended daily dose. This is the situation that actually damages musicians’ hearing, and it damages handpan players exactly as readily as it damages drummers.
Effects and processing deserve a mention too. Heavy reverb and delay raise the average level considerably while barely changing the peaks, so a wash of reverb in headphones is louder over time than it feels. If you monitor on headphones while recording, that is a place to be disciplined.
The practical upshot: acoustic handpan in a normal room, relax. Anything with a gain stage in it, treat like any other amplified music, which means know the level and protect yourself.

BOD-12Should I use hearing protection for long sessions and sound baths?#

Short answer. For ordinary acoustic practice, generally no. For amplified playing, loud jams, festival stages, and for practitioners running back to back sound sessions with gongs and multiple instruments, yes, and musicians’ filtered earplugs rather than foam.The decision is about dose, meaning level multiplied by time, not about whether something sounds loud in the moment. Working from the WHO and NIOSH reference points in BOD-10, an hour of moderate acoustic playing is well inside safe territory. Five hours a day, every day, at a strong dynamic on a loud instrument is a different calculation and worth taking seriously.
Where protection is clearly worth it:
- Amplified performance and rehearsal with a PA or monitors.
- Group jams, especially indoors, and especially with djembes, cajóns or a drum kit in the room. The handpan is rarely the loudest thing present.
- Festival environments, where you may be exposed for hours whether or not you are the one playing.
- Sound bath and sound therapy practitioners running several sessions a day. Gongs in particular can be very loud at close range, and the practitioner is the one person in the room getting the full dose repeatedly, day after day, while every client gets it once. If you facilitate professionally, this is an occupational exposure and deserves proper thought.
Which type. Standard foam earplugs attenuate high frequencies far more than low ones, which makes music sound muffled and, worse, tempts you to remove them. Musicians’ filtered earplugs (universal fit versions are inexpensive; custom moulded ones cost more and fit better) attenuate more evenly across the spectrum, typically in something like 9, 15 or 25 dB versions, so the music still sounds like music. For handpan specifically, the lighter filters are usually enough and preserve the overtone detail you actually need to hear to play well.
What not to do. Do not use protection as permission to play louder, which is a well documented behaviour in musicians and defeats the point. Do not rely on “I would notice if it were too loud”; noise induced hearing loss is painless and gradual, and the first thing that goes is high frequency detail, which for a handpan player is precisely the shimmer that makes the instrument beautiful.
Warning signs that your exposure is too high: ringing or buzzing after a session, muffled hearing that clears over the following hours, or needing the volume higher than you used to. Temporary threshold shift is a warning, not a harmless quirk. Repeated, it becomes permanent.
BOD-13Can I play while pregnant, or with a baby nearby?#
beginner
Short answer. Playing an acoustic handpan while pregnant is not a recognised hazard, and the levels involved are far below anything the guidance warns about. Around a baby, keep the instrument at a sensible distance, keep the volume modest, and be aware that infant ears are more vulnerable than adult ones. As always, your midwife or doctor knows your situation and this page does not.Pregnancy. The relevant guidance is about occupational noise, and it is aimed at industrial levels. NIOSH notes that fetal hearing develops by around the twentieth week, that fetuses respond to sound by around the twenty fourth, and that very loud noise may be able to damage a developing fetus’s hearing. Its specific recommendation for pregnant workers is to avoid environments above 115 dBA, even with hearing protection in place. It also makes two points worth carrying over: hearing protection worn by the mother does not fully protect the fetus, and low frequency sound passes through the body more readily than high frequency sound, so distance from the source matters.
An acoustic handpan does not come close to 115 dBA. Ordinary playing while pregnant is not something the evidence gives you a reason to avoid, and many players continue throughout. The realistic considerations are mechanical rather than acoustic: lap playing gets awkward as pregnancy progresses, and a stand at a comfortable height, with a chair rather than a cross legged floor position, is usually the sensible adaptation. Amplified performance is the one situation where the guidance does become relevant, because that is where 100 dBA and above genuinely occurs.
Babies and small children in the room. Infant ears are more sensitive than adult ones, and paediatric guidance is correspondingly cautious. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2023 policy statement on noise exposure in infants, children and adolescents recommends, among other things, that neonatal intensive care unit noise be kept below 45 dB, and that hearing protection be used for children in noisy venues.
In practice that means: do not play with a baby directly beside or under the instrument, which is where levels are highest and where the low frequencies are most physical. A few metres away, at a modest dynamic, in a normal room, is a different situation entirely and is how most players with young children actually manage. If you are playing at a volume where an adult would raise their voice to be heard, that is too loud for a baby at close range.
Sound baths with infants present deserve particular care, because gongs and multiple instruments at close range are far louder than a single handpan.
BOD-14Is the handpan suitable for children, and from what age?#
beginner
Short answer. Yes, and it is one of the more child friendly instruments there is: no reading required, no correct notes to get wrong, immediate reward. Around five upwards for genuine playing, younger for supervised exploration. The real constraints are the weight, the cost and the fragility of the instrument, not the child.Why it works well for children. Every note on a handpan belongs to one scale, so there is no wrong note. A child can produce a beautiful sound within seconds, which is not true of a violin or a clarinet, and that immediate success is enormously motivating. It requires no notation, no theory and no physical strength. It is quiet enough for a flat, unlike a drum kit. And it teaches rhythm, dynamics, listening and improvisation, which are genuinely valuable musical foundations.
Age. Physically, a child of around four or five can strike a handpan and make it sing. What varies is whether they can be trusted with the instrument, which matters more here than with most starter instruments. From roughly five to seven, most children can play meaningfully and take instruction. From around ten, they can work on technique in the way an adult would.
The practical constraints:
Weight and size. A typical handpan weighs somewhere in the region of three and a half to five kilograms and is 50 to 55 cm across, which is a lot on a small lap. A stand at the right height solves this and is close to essential for younger children. Smaller diameter instruments exist and are easier for small players to reach across.
Cost and fragility. This is the honest obstacle. Handpans are expensive, and they are dented by being dropped, by rings, by belt buckles and by enthusiastic hard hitting with objects. Handing a four year old a several thousand pound instrument unsupervised is not a plan. Many families start with a steel tongue drum, which costs a fraction as much, is far more robust, works on the same one scale principle and gives most of the same benefits. If the interest sticks, move up.
Technique. Children tend to hit hard, because hitting hard is fun. The instrument tolerates this better than its reputation suggests but not indefinitely, and hard striking with anything other than hands is the genuine risk to tuning. Teaching the bounce early, framed as “the quieter you play, the prettier it sounds”, works surprisingly well.
Hearing. At normal playing volumes this is not a concern for a child playing it themselves. See BOD-13 for infants nearby.
