CUL-09Where have I heard the handpan before?#
beginner
Short answer. Most likely a YouTube video, a meditation or yoga playlist, a busker, or a trailer, advert or documentary using library music. If you have heard it in a named context, the two most probable are Hang Massive’s “Once Again” and Manu Delago’s work with Björk.Hang Massive. The duo of Danny Cudd and Markus Offbeat, who met in 2010. They posted “Once Again” to YouTube on the last day of 2011 and it became the video that introduced the instrument to most of the world, passing 49 million views by 2020. It is genuinely the reason a large proportion of players first went looking for a handpan. Their albums include Beats for Your Feet (2012), As It Is (2013), Distant Light (2016) and Luminous Emptiness (2018).
Manu Delago. Austrian, born 1984 in Innsbruck, classically and jazz trained, and by some distance the instrument’s most credentialed musician. He took up the Hang in 2003. He has played percussion and Hang with Björk from the Biophilia tour (2011 onwards) through to the Cornucopia shows. He worked with The Cinematic Orchestra between 2014 and 2016. He contributed as composer, musician and engineer to Anoushka Shankar’s Land of Gold (2016), and their collaboration with the Metropole Orkest, Between Us, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Global Music Album. His own list of collaborators includes Ólafur Arnalds, Nitin Sawhney, Joss Stone, Ellie Goulding, Shpongle, the London Symphony Orchestra and Metropole Orkest. His 2018 project Parasol Peak was an album and film recorded with an ensemble during an Alpine mountaineering ascent.
Daniel Waples, performing as Hang in Balance, is another whose videos reached tens of millions of views and who has done a great deal to spread the instrument through street performance and free release albums.
Sam Maher became widely known through New York subway performances that circulated heavily online.
Library and production music. This is probably the most common and least visible route. The handpan is a staple of stock music catalogues, where it signals “calm, natural, contemplative, vaguely global” in about two seconds. That is why it turns up in adverts, corporate videos, documentary underscore, wellness apps and travel content constantly, usually uncredited. If you are certain you have heard it somewhere but cannot place it, this is almost always why.
Specific film and television credits are surprisingly hard to verify, because handpan is normally part of a texture rather than a named credit, and vendor blogs listing “handpans in famous films” tend not to withstand checking. Treat unsourced lists of that kind with caution.

CUL-10Why did the handpan go viral, and how did it become a street music cliché?#

Short answer. Because it is visually strange, instantly beautiful, needs no explanation and photographs well, and because it arrived exactly when YouTube was becoming the way people discovered music. The busking cliché followed from the same properties: it stops passers by, and it is portable.Take the virality first. The instrument has an unusually good ratio of mystery to accessibility. Nobody knows what it is on first sight, which makes people stop. It looks like an object rather than an instrument, which makes the sound feel like a magic trick. And it sounds beautiful immediately, with no acquired taste required and no cultural knowledge needed to enjoy it. That is a rare combination. Compare a santoor or a hurdy gurdy, both fascinating, neither of which produces the same instant “what IS that” reaction from a general audience.
Then there is timing. The instrument became available in tiny numbers from 2000, but it became known between roughly 2011 and 2015, which is precisely the period when YouTube shifted from a novelty site to the default place people found new music, and when “watch this, you have to hear it” became a thing people did by sending a link. Hang Massive’s “Once Again”, posted at the end of 2011, is the clearest single inflection point. It did not go viral because it was aggressively promoted. It went viral because it was pleasant, mysterious, and easy to pass on.
The busking cliché is the same mechanism operating in physical space. A handpan on a street will stop people who would walk past a guitarist without registering them, because they have never seen one. It is loud enough to be heard in a quiet pedestrian street without amplification, quiet enough not to be moved on, portable in a rucksack style bag, needs no power, and every note is in key so an hour of improvisation never produces a bad moment. From a purely practical busking standpoint it is close to an ideal instrument.
The result, in tourist cities across Europe in particular, is that handpan buskers became numerous enough to be a recognisable type by the late 2010s, sometimes several on the same street. The predictable consequence followed: the novelty wore off in exactly the places where it was most concentrated, and a sound that was startling in 2012 became background in 2019. That is not a criticism of anybody busking. It is what happens to any instrument that is unusually good at exactly one thing.
CUL-11Is the “hippie instrument” stereotype fair?#

Short answer. It is unfair as a judgement and roughly accurate as an observation. A large part of the handpan’s audience genuinely does sit in the alternative, festival and wellness world, and the marketing leans into that hard. None of which tells you anything about what the instrument can do in other hands.Where the stereotype comes from is not mysterious. The instrument spread through festival culture, meditation practice, yoga studios and busking pitches. Its most visible online presence is meditation playlists and sound healing. A great deal of the commercial language around it involves chakras, frequencies, energy and healing. Its early adopters were often people already drawn to that world. If your only exposure has been a Bali retreat reel or a fire spinning video, the stereotype is simply an accurate description of what you have seen.
What the stereotype misses is scale and range. Manu Delago has toured with Björk and been Grammy nominated for orchestral collaboration work. The instrument turns up in film scoring, in jazz, in electronic music, in contemporary classical writing, and increasingly in ensembles where it is treated as a pitched percussion instrument like any other, not as an atmosphere generator. There are players doing serious rhythmic and harmonic work that has nothing to do with the wellness framing at all.
There is also a design point worth making. The reason the instrument attracts contemplative use is not mystical, it is structural: it is tuned to a single scale, which means there are no wrong notes, which means the barrier between having a feeling and expressing it musically is unusually low. That property is exactly why it works in a sound bath, and it is also exactly what a jazz musician finds limiting. The same feature produces both the stereotype and the criticism.
The reasonable position: the stereotype describes a real and large part of the culture, which is not something to be defensive about. Plenty of instruments carry a cultural association (the recorder, the banjo, the pan flute) and the association says nothing about the instrument’s ceiling. If someone dismisses the handpan on these grounds, the useful response is not to argue but to play them something by a serious player and let it do the work.
Where the stereotype does deserve pushback is when the mysticism is not just a vibe but a factual claim being used to sell instruments. That is a different problem, addressed in CUL-14.

CUL-12Is the handpan used in music therapy, and what is actually evidenced?#

Short answer. Some qualified music therapists do use handpans, and the general evidence base for music therapy is reasonable if imperfect. But there is essentially no clinical research on the handpan specifically, and none of the evidence supports claims that this particular instrument treats particular conditions.What music therapy actually is. It is a regulated healthcare profession, not a synonym for playing soothing music. In the UK, “music therapist” is a title protected by law: practitioners hold a master’s degree in music therapy and must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. Equivalent credentialing exists in many other countries. Music therapists work in mental health, neurorehabilitation, dementia care, autism support, palliative care and paediatrics, and the work is a therapeutic relationship mediated through music, not a playlist.
What the evidence shows. The most useful recent synthesis is a 2025 systematic review with multilevel meta-analyses in eClinicalMedicine, covering 51 studies and 3,276 participants, which found a statistically significant medium effect of music therapy on anxiety (g = 0.357). It is worth reading the caveats as carefully as the headline. Self reported anxiety improved more (g = 0.410) than physiological measures, where the effect was small and not statistically significant (g = 0.153). Most included studies lacked masking, so expectancy effects could not be excluded. Only 23.5% of studies were rated methodologically strong and 39.2% were rated weak. The authors’ own framing is moderate confidence in psychological benefit, low confidence in physiological effects. There are comparable bodies of evidence for music therapy in depression and in dementia care.
That is a real finding and a genuinely useful one. It is also considerably more modest than the way music therapy is often invoked in handpan marketing.
Where the handpan sits in this. A handpan is a good instrument for therapeutic work for practical reasons that need no mysticism: it is tuned to one scale, so a client with no musical training cannot produce a dissonant result and therefore cannot fail; it responds to the lightest touch, so it is accessible to people with limited strength or coordination; its sustain gives space for call and response without pressure; and it is played with the hands, which is more direct and less mediated than a stick or a keyboard. Those are exactly the qualities a therapist would want.
What does not exist is a research literature on handpans. There are no clinical trials of handpan as an intervention that we could find; the material online making therapeutic claims about the instrument is overwhelmingly published by companies selling handpans. So the honest statement is: music therapy has an evidence base, the handpan is a plausible and popular tool within it, and anyone claiming the handpan specifically has been shown to do something is going beyond what has been studied.
CUL-13What is a sound bath, and what actually happens in one?#
beginner
Short answer. A group session where people lie down, usually for 45 to 90 minutes, while a facilitator plays sustained, resonant instruments (gongs, singing bowls, chimes, and often a handpan) with no melody or pulse to follow. Most people find it deeply relaxing. It is a relaxation practice, not a medical treatment, and the two should not be confused.What happens in practice. You arrive, take off your shoes, and lie on a mat with a blanket and often a cushion under the knees and an eye mask. There may be a short introduction and some breathing guidance. Then the facilitator begins playing, usually starting quietly, moving between instruments, building through the middle of the session and easing off towards the end. There is nothing to do. You are not meant to follow anything, respond to anything or achieve anything. Sessions typically end with several minutes of silence and a slow return to sitting.
The instruments vary. Large gongs and Himalayan or crystal singing bowls are the core. Chimes, shruti box, ocean drum, rainstick, voice and handpan are common additions. The handpan’s role is usually to provide something melodic and human among sounds that are otherwise very sustained and abstract, and it works well for that.
Why people find it powerful. Several ordinary explanations stack up. You are lying still in a dark quiet room, which most adults essentially never do. The sounds are non repetitive and unpredictable, so attention has something to rest on without any demand attached. There is no goal, so no failure. It is often the first hour in weeks where nobody wants anything from you. Sustained low frequency sound at moderate volume is physically felt as well as heard, and many people describe that as grounding. Group settings add a settling effect of their own. None of this requires an exotic mechanism and none of it makes the experience less real.
What the research says. Thin. The most cited study is Goldsby and colleagues in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine (2017), reporting improvements in mood, tension and wellbeing after singing bowl sound meditation. It is an observational study with no control group, so it cannot separate the sound from lying down, from expectation, or from the group setting. Subsequent reviews of singing bowl research have found the clinical literature small and of limited quality. The reasonable conclusion is that sound baths reliably produce pleasant relaxation and that we do not have good evidence for anything beyond that.
What to be sceptical about. Claims that specific frequencies target specific organs, chakras, DNA or diseases. Claims of detoxification or cellular repair. Any suggestion that a sound bath substitutes for treatment of a diagnosed condition.
One practical note. Gongs at close range are genuinely loud. If you facilitate several sessions a day, see BOD-12.
CUL-14What about 432 Hz?#
intermediate
Short answer. 432 Hz is an alternative tuning reference for the note A, about 32 cents (roughly a third of a semitone) below the standard 440 Hz. The claims made for it are far larger than the evidence supports, the handful of studies that exist are small and mixed, and most listeners cannot identify it blind. Makers offer it because customers ask for it, and if you want it, that is a perfectly fine reason to have it.What proponents claim. That 432 Hz is a “natural” frequency aligned with mathematical or cosmological constants, that it resonates with the body or the earth, that it produces measurably deeper relaxation, that 440 Hz was imposed for dubious historical reasons, and sometimes that it produces more beautiful cymatic patterns. The historical strand of this deserves a note: concert pitch genuinely did vary enormously across Europe for centuries, 440 Hz was only standardised internationally in the twentieth century, and some nineteenth century Italian pitch standards sat near 432. That much is true. The leap from “pitch standards are arbitrary and recent” to “432 has intrinsic physical or healing properties” is not supported by anything.
What the evidence shows. There is a small research literature and it is genuinely mixed rather than uniformly negative, which is worth saying honestly.
A 2019 double blind crossover pilot in EXPLORE with 33 healthy volunteers reported a lower heart rate (about 4.8 bpm, p = 0.05) and higher self reported attention and satisfaction when listening to 432 Hz versions of the same music. A 2025 randomised crossover trial in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies with 43 cancer patients, using a body monochord tuned to 432 Hz versus 443 Hz, found somewhat greater reductions in heart rate and pulse wave velocity with 432 Hz, while psychological outcomes improved comparably with both, and the authors concluded the difference was “more pronounced but not significantly different”.
So: small samples, pilot studies, mixed and modest effects, differences that often do not reach significance, and outcomes that are exactly the sort of thing susceptible to expectation when participants have opinions about tuning. This is not a body of evidence that supports strong claims. It is also not nothing, and dismissing it outright is as unscientific as overselling it.
Why makers offer it. Demand, mostly. Tuning a handpan to A = 432 rather than 440 costs the maker nothing extra; it is the same work at slightly different target frequencies. Some makers offer it enthusiastically, some offer it while privately thinking it is nonsense, and some decline.
The one practical consequence. A 432 Hz instrument is out of tune with every 440 Hz instrument you might want to play with, by about a third of a semitone, which is very audible. If you ever intend to play with a guitarist, a pianist, a fixed pitch instrument or a backing track, this matters far more than any of the above. That is the real decision.

CUL-15Is playing the handpan actually good for anxiety and focus?#

Short answer. Probably yes, for reasons that are well understood and not remotely mystical, and the honest evidence is about music and wellbeing in general rather than about this instrument. What the research supports is modest, real benefits, mostly on how people report feeling. What it does not support is treating it as a treatment.What is genuinely supported. Music interventions have a real evidence base for anxiety and mood. The 2025 eClinicalMedicine meta-analysis of 51 studies found a medium effect on anxiety, stronger for self reported measures than physiological ones, with the authors expressing moderate confidence in psychological benefits and low confidence in physiological effects. Music therapy for depression and for people with dementia has comparable support. Beyond music specifically, there are well established general findings that regular absorbing activity, structured practice, and creative expression are associated with better mental wellbeing.
Why the handpan in particular is plausible. Several mechanisms, none of which need a special explanation.
Flow. The handpan is unusually good at producing absorbed, effortless attention. The single scale removes the possibility of a wrong note, which removes evaluation, which is the thing that usually stops people relaxing into playing. Twenty minutes of genuine absorption is a well documented route to reduced rumination.
Breath and rhythm. Playing slowly tends to slow and regularise breathing without anyone instructing it. Slow breathing has real, measurable effects on autonomic state.
Touch and sound together. You feel the instrument through your hands and legs as well as hearing it. Multisensory, self generated, predictable sensory input is calming for reasons that are unglamorous and reliable.
Agency. You are making the sound rather than receiving it. Active music making generally shows different and often better effects than passive listening on measures of mood and self efficacy, though the 2025 meta-analysis interestingly found receptive methods outperforming purely active ones in clinical anxiety contexts, which is a reminder that this is not simple.
Ritual. Sitting down with an instrument at the same time each day is a behavioural routine, and routines help.
What is not supported. That particular scales treat particular emotional states. That particular frequencies affect particular organs. That the handpan alters brainwaves in a therapeutically meaningful way, entrains your heart rate to a target, or does anything to your cells. That it is a substitute for treatment of a diagnosed anxiety disorder or depression. If you are unwell, this is a good thing to do alongside proper care, not instead of it.
The unexaggerated version is still worth having. An instrument that reliably gets you into twenty absorbed, non judgemental minutes a day is a genuinely valuable thing to own.
CUL-16Is playing a handpan cultural appropriation?#

Short answer. Playing one is not. The harder and genuinely contested question is whether the instrument’s creation and commercial success involved taking from Trinidadian steelpan culture without adequate credit or benefit, and there are people on both sides of that with reasonable arguments.The factual lineage. Felix Rohner’s route into steel began in Bern in 1976, when he and Alex Santschi heard a Trinidadian steel orchestra perform at a city celebration and set out to build instruments themselves. Rohner built steelpans for years, studying instruments by Trinidadian masters including Ellie Mannette, ran a steelpan workshop from 1985, and developed metallurgical and acoustic research with industrial and academic partners, patenting a steel treatment process in 1998. In 2000 he and Sabina Schärer produced the Hang. The instrument is formally classified as a subset of the steelpan family. Its playing method and convex shape owe as much to the Indian ghatam as to the pan, and PANArt have consistently described the resonator concept as inspired by the steelpan’s structure rather than copied from it.
The critique. Some Trinidadian steelpan advocates argue that the handpan industry, overwhelmingly European and North American, built a commercially successful instrument on Trinidadian innovation while presenting it as a new Swiss invention, and that Trinidad, whose steelpan is often described as the only acoustic instrument invented in the twentieth century, has received neither credit nor economic benefit. The manufacturer KaribPAN Steel has made this argument at length and pointedly, quoting PANArt and Pantheon Steel figures describing the work as translating the steelpan into a European context. It has also been debated on Trinidadian steelpan forums such as When Steel Talks. The critique is sometimes framed in inflammatory terms, but its core observation is factual: the wealth generated by the handpan has flowed almost entirely away from the culture that developed the underlying technology.
The counter position. Handpan writers, and PANArt themselves, argue the Hang is a distinct instrument rather than a derivative one, that its acknowledged debts have never been hidden, that steelpan and handpan sound, function and repertoire are different, and that some in the Trinidadian pan community do not regard it as appropriation at all. The claim sometimes made that Trinidad’s steelpan community as a whole holds no objection is itself contested, since some of its members clearly do.
Where that leaves a player. Buying and playing a handpan does not require you to take a position on any of this, and no reasonable person will accuse you of appropriation for owning one. What is worth doing is knowing the lineage, saying it accurately when you talk about the instrument, resisting the version of the story where a Swiss couple invented steel tuning from nothing, and being interested in the steelpan on its own terms. Credit costs nothing and this history is genuinely interesting.
