The small habits that keep a handpan healthy: wiping, oiling, cleaning, hands and jewellery.

CAR-01What is the basic care routine for a handpan?#

Short answer. Wash and dry your hands before playing, wipe the whole instrument with a dry microfibre cloth after playing, keep it dry and out of hot cars and direct sun, and reapply a protective oil or wax whenever the surface starts to look dry or dull. Everything else is detail.

That routine is short because it is the whole of it. The two failure modes for a handpan are corrosion and deformation, and the daily habits above address the first. Deformation is addressed by how you play and how you carry it, which is covered in CAR-18 and CAR-19.

A reasonable weekly and monthly layer sits on top of the daily wipe. Once in a while, look at the instrument properly in good light: tilt it, check the underside, the rim, the inside edge of the port and any area that sits against case foam. These are the places rust starts, because they are the places moisture sits and the places you never wipe. If your instrument has a rubber or silicone ring on the rim, take it off periodically, dry underneath it, and let both dry fully before refitting. Trapped damp under a rim ring is a classic slow rust site.

Then, at whatever interval your climate and steel demand, clean and re-treat the surface. That means removing the old, tired oil film with isopropyl alcohol or surgical spirit on a soft cloth, then applying a thin coat of a handpan specific oil or wax and buffing off the excess. Excess is the enemy: a wet, sticky surface attracts dust, feels unpleasant under the fingers and, on porous nitrided steel, can audibly dull the sustain.

Going deeper. The interval part of this routine is the only genuinely contested bit. Published maker advice ranges from weekly through to twice a year, and both ends of that range come from serious builders. The variables are steel type, surface finish, your climate and how much you sweat. Treat the visual state of the surface as your real guide, and check your maker’s guidance for your specific instrument.

CAR-02Do I really need to wipe it after every play, and why?#

Short answer. Yes, on any carbon steel instrument, and it is still a good habit on stainless. Human sweat is a warm, salty, mildly acidic electrolyte sitting directly on bare steel, and it is the single largest cause of surface rust on handpans in normal use.

The chemistry is not mysterious. Sweat is mostly water, but it carries sodium chloride, lactic acid, urea and amino acids, and it typically sits somewhere around pH 4.5 to 6, so slightly acidic. Chloride ions are the important part: they break down passive and protective surface layers and let localised corrosion get started, which is why salt is such an effective accelerator of rust in general. Add body heat, which speeds the reaction up, and a fingerprint left overnight on an unprotected tone field is a genuinely aggressive little corrosion cell.

This is why makers converge on the same instruction even when they disagree about oils. Saraz put it plainly in their care guide: skin oils are the leading cause of surface rust because of the acidity of sweat. Isthmus, Novapans, Ayasa and effectively every other maker who publishes care advice say the same thing in their own words. Wipe it, every time, with a dry microfibre cloth.

How much this matters scales with how much you sweat and what you own. A player with dry hands in a dry climate on a stainless instrument can be careless for a long time and get away with it. A player with acidic sweat, in a humid coastal city, on a nitrided carbon steel instrument, can put visible spotting on a tone field within days. People differ a lot here, and if you are one of the players whose hands leave dark prints on brass or silver, assume you are on the aggressive end.

Wipe the whole instrument, not just the notes you played. The gu or bottom shell picks up sweat from your legs and forearms, and the rim picks up everything. Then let it sit out for a few minutes before it goes back in a case, especially if you played hard and the surface is damp.

CAR-03What oil should I use, and how often?#

Short answer. Use a product made for handpans or a known skin safe protectant: Phoenix Handpan Oil, Isthmus Handpan Oil, Metal Sounds oil, Pure Sound Pan Wax, Meinl’s handpan care wax and Ballistol are all in common use. Frequency depends on your steel and climate, and published advice ranges from weekly to twice a year, so check your maker’s guidance.

What all the sensible options share is that they leave a thin, non sticky, food or skin safe film that keeps moisture and sweat off bare steel. That last point matters more than it sounds. You put your bare hands on this surface for hours, so anything you apply ends up on your skin and in the air you breathe over it. That rules out motor oils, penetrating sprays and generic industrial rust inhibitors, several of which are also solvent heavy enough to attack the glue line or the surface colour. Isthmus explicitly warn against harsh factory rust inhibitors on those grounds.

Makers do disagree about specific products. Saraz list Isthmus oil, Pure Sound Pan Wax, Phoenix Oil and Froglube as acceptable; Isthmus recommend their own oil, Phoenix, Ballistol, Meinl wax and Pure Sound wax, and specifically discourage Froglube. Both are experienced builders. This is a real disagreement rather than one of them being wrong, and it is a good example of why the correct move is to follow the guidance for the instrument you actually own.

There is also an oil versus wax question. Nitriding leaves a hard but slightly porous surface, which can absorb oil like a sponge. Several makers report that a soaked nitrided surface loses a little sustain, and Saraz prefer a wax over an oil on nitrided instruments for exactly that reason. On stainless, oil is mostly cosmetic and protective rather than structural, and the choice matters less.

Frequency, honestly stated: Isthmus suggest every six to twelve months in dry climates and every one to six months in humid or salty ones. Saraz describe oiling nitrided steel roughly every two to four weeks. Phoenix’s own guidance is a light clean and oil about once a week. That spread is wide enough that no single number is defensible. Use the surface as the indicator: when the colour looks dry, chalky or lightened, and water or sweat no longer beads and wipes away cleanly, it is time. Always apply thinly and buff the excess off.

CAR-04Can I use coconut oil, and what are the arguments against it?#

Short answer. Plenty of players do, and some makers list it as an acceptable alternative, but it is a food oil rather than a protectant. The arguments against are that virgin coconut oil can go rancid, can gum into a sticky film, and is solid below roughly 24 degrees Celsius. Fractionated coconut oil avoids most of that.

The case for it is straightforward. It is cheap, available everywhere, skin safe, does not smell of solvent, and it does put a hydrophobic film between sweat and steel. Ayasa list coconut or olive oil as alternatives to Phoenix oil while noting there is less documented experience with them, and several general care guides include coconut oil among safe choices. Players in warm climates have used it for years without disaster.

The case against has three parts. First, rancidity: coconut oil is unusually resistant to going rancid compared with most kitchen oils because it is highly saturated, but it is not immune, and a thin film on warm metal handled daily is a much harsher environment than a sealed jar. A rancid film smells sour and is unpleasant to play on. Second, gumming: food oils left as thin films tend over months to thicken and polymerise into a tacky layer that grabs dust and fingerprints, and removing it means an alcohol clean rather than a wipe. Third, the melting point: unfractionated coconut oil is solid at ordinary room temperature in a temperate climate, so it goes on as a smear rather than a film and is easy to over apply.

Fractionated coconut oil, sometimes sold as liquid coconut oil, removes most of the objection. The long chain fats are stripped out, so it stays liquid, has a long shelf life and does not gum in the same way. That is why it is the version most often named when guides do endorse coconut oil.

The honest summary is that this is a live argument in the community rather than a settled question, and the stakes are moderate. Nobody credible claims coconut oil destroys instruments. The claim is that dedicated handpan oils and waxes were formulated for this exact job and behave more predictably over years. If your maker names a product, use theirs. If you are already using coconut oil and the surface is clean and dry to the touch, you are not in trouble, but clean the old film off with alcohol before you reapply rather than layering it up.

CAR-05How do I clean off fingerprints and grime?#

Short answer. Dry microfibre first. If that is not enough, use isopropyl alcohol or surgical spirit on a soft cloth, clean the whole surface evenly, then reapply your oil or wax, because the alcohol strips the protective film along with the grime.

Most marks are not grime at all, they are old oil that has picked up dust and skin. Reaching for a solvent before you have tried a dry cloth is a common overreaction. Work the microfibre in gentle circles and most fingerprints lift straight off.

When you do need the alcohol step, the method is simple. Dampen the cloth rather than the instrument, and wipe systematically: tone fields, shoulders, ding, rim, underside, and around the port. Watch the colour: on nitrided steel, the surface visibly lightens as the oil comes off, and darkens again when you re-oil. That colour change is your progress indicator. Do the whole surface rather than a patch, because a locally cleaned area re-oiled on top of a dirty surrounding area tends to show as a halo.

Things to avoid. Acetone and other aggressive solvents can attack surface finishes and, more importantly, the adhesive holding the two shells together, so keep them away from the instrument entirely. Household cleaning sprays, degreasers and anything containing bleach or chloride are a bad idea on steel. Abrasive pads belong in the rust removal conversation rather than the cleaning one, because they take off colour and finish as well as dirt, and once the nitride colour is scoured away it does not come back. Water is not forbidden, but any water needs to be dried off immediately and completely, and there is rarely a reason to introduce it when alcohol works better.

Painted, powder coated or lacquered instruments are a separate case. Solvents can dull or lift a coating, so on those check with your maker before using alcohol at all, and stick to a dry or very slightly damp cloth as the default.

Finish the job. An alcohol cleaned instrument is bare, protected steel with nothing on it, and on carbon steel that is the most vulnerable it will ever be. Re-oil it the same day.

CAR-06Should I wash my hands before playing?#

beginner

Short answer. Yes, and dry them properly. It costs thirty seconds and it removes the salt, acid, food residue and hand cream that would otherwise go straight onto the steel.

The reasoning is the same as for wiping afterwards, applied at the other end. Whatever is on your hands when you sit down is transferred to the tone fields in the first minute of playing and then stays there for as long as the instrument sits untouched. Salt from crisps, citrus juice, sun cream and sweat from a bike ride are all more corrosive than the sweat you generate while playing.

Two details make the difference between this helping and hurting. Dry your hands completely, because damp hands on steel are worse than the dirt you just removed. And avoid moisturisers and sun cream immediately before playing. Many hand creams contain emulsifiers, salts and water that sit on the surface and hold moisture against it, and sun cream in particular is notorious for marking metal. If you have just applied either, wash again.

There is a small playing benefit too. Clean, dry, slightly grippy fingers get a cleaner attack out of a tone field than greasy ones. Very dry hands have the opposite problem and can feel like they skate, which is worth knowing if you find your touch inconsistent between sessions.

None of this needs to become anxious ritual. The instrument is a piece of engineering, not a relic, and it is designed to be touched. Players who obsess about contamination tend to play less, which is a worse outcome than a fingerprint. Wash, dry, play, wipe.

Going deeper. If you teach, run workshops or take an instrument to a jam, the hand washing question is really a group hygiene question. A shared instrument in a session sees dozens of pairs of unwashed hands in an evening, which is why teachers who do this regularly keep a microfibre cloth on the stand and wipe between players, and why workshop instruments tend to be nitrided workhorses rather than anyone’s favourite stainless.

CAR-07Does playing with rings, watches or long nails matter?#

beginner

Short answer. Yes. Take rings, watches and bracelets off before you play. Hard metal against a thin, tensioned steel membrane leaves scratches at best and dents at worst, and a dent in a tone field is a tuning problem, not a cosmetic one.

The risk is not evenly distributed. A ring worn on a finger you strike with is the worst case, because it delivers the whole force of a stroke through a small hard edge onto the most sensitive part of the instrument. Watches and bracelets are usually a scraping risk rather than an impact one, sliding across a shoulder or rim as your wrist moves, and metal watch cases can catch the rim when you reach across. Novapans and other makers give the same blunt instruction: remove jewellery before playing.

Nails are more nuanced. Long nails on the striking fingers change your technique before they damage anything, because you end up hitting with nail rather than the pad of the finger, which produces a thin, clicky attack and less of the fundamental. Sustained hard nail contact can mark a surface finish and, over years, wear it. It is unlikely to dent healthy steel by itself. Many players simply keep the nails on their playing hands short and let the others grow, which is the same compromise guitarists make in reverse.

A related item that does more damage than any of these: mallets and sticks. Some makers, Saraz among them, actively discourage their use on their instruments, because a hard tip concentrates force in a way fingers never do. If you want mallet textures, use soft mallets, play quietly, and check whether your maker considers that acceptable on your model.

If you do scratch it, take a breath. A surface scratch on the finish is cosmetic and affects nothing acoustically. What matters is whether the metal has been deformed, which you will hear rather than see: a dented tone field goes flat, sounds duller or picks up a wobble. See TRB-11 for what to do next.
