Care and maintenance
Everything about keeping a handpan clean, rust free, in tune, safely stored and intact through travel.
Handpans are steel instruments that live in contact with human hands, and hands are salty, acidic and warm. Almost all of handpan care follows from that one fact, plus a second one: the tuning is held in the tension of thin sheet metal, so anything that deforms the metal changes the sound.
Care advice genuinely differs by steel type and by maker. A nitrided carbon steel instrument and a stainless steel instrument want different treatment, and two respected makers will give you different oiling intervals for the same instrument. Where that is true, these pages say so and tell you to check your maker’s guidance rather than pretending there is one right answer.
