What handpans cost in 2026, why they cost that, whether the money buys sound, and how well they hold value.

BUY-08How much does a handpan cost in 2026?#

Short answer. In 2026 the working range is roughly 300 to 5,000 US dollars. Mass produced instruments sit at 300 to 900, small workshop and artisan instruments at about 1,000 to 3,000, and premium or heavily customised instruments above that. Original PANArt Hangs on the collector market are a separate world entirely.

These are 2026 figures and they move. Steel prices, nitriding costs, freight and exchange rates have all shifted repeatedly since 2020, and different sources disagree by several hundred dollars on where each tier begins. Use the shape of the ladder rather than the exact numbers.

European makers commonly price in euros at broadly similar levels, so the euro figures track these closely, but check the rate on the day and check whether the price shown includes VAT.

Costs beyond the instrument (2026 guide figures). Hard or padded case 50 to 300 USD, international shipping 100 to 200 USD, later retuning 150 to 300 USD plus freight, oils and cloths 10 to 20 USD. Import duty and VAT vary by country and can add ten to twenty five per cent on a cross border purchase. Always calculate the landed cost.

BUY-09Why are handpans so expensive?#

Short answer. Because a handpan is dozens of hours of skilled manual work on a material that resists being tuned, made by tiny workshops with no economies of scale, and a meaningful fraction of the instruments started never make it out of the shop.

Four things stack up.

It is nearly all labour, and the labour is rare. Estimates from makers for a professional instrument commonly land in the range of forty to eighty hours of skilled work, depending on the maker, the number of notes and the finish, with some citing figures either side of that. That work is not assembly, it is judgement: listening, striking, listening again. There is no apprenticeship system and no school. Most makers taught themselves over years, and the skill takes years to become reliable.

Every note is three tuning problems, not one. Each tone field must have its fundamental, octave and compound fifth brought into alignment, and adjusting one moves the others. Then the fields interact through the shell, so tuning note seven can pull note three out again. Complexity rises faster than note count.

Failure is built into the price. Steel under this much local stress cracks. Nobody publishes audited figures, but a loss rate somewhere in the region of one in ten to one in five shells during forming, heat treatment or tuning is commonly quoted for established makers, and a shell that fails at the tuning stage has already absorbed most of its labour. The surviving instruments carry that cost.

There are no economies of scale. Even well known makers typically produce in the low hundreds of instruments a year, some far fewer. There is no factory line to spread tooling, kiln and workshop costs across.

Add materials that are not cheap either (specialist steel sheet, nitriding in a gas furnace or stainless stock), packaging robust enough to survive freight, and the cost of after sales support, and the price stops looking arbitrary.

What is fair to say is that some of the price is scarcity and brand, not only labour. Waiting lists and reputation do move prices. That is true of every handmade instrument.

BUY-10What exactly am I paying for when I buy a handpan?#

Short answer. Steel, heat treatment, and a very large number of individually judged hammer strikes, plus the shells that failed along the way and the years the maker spent learning to do it.

Roughly what happens to your money, stage by stage.

Raw material. Two circular steel blanks, commonly somewhere around 0.8 to 1.25 mm thick, with about 1 mm the usual reference point. Makers use nitridable low carbon sheet, or stainless grades, or (less commonly now) raw untreated steel. The steel itself is a modest fraction of the final price, but the grade and thickness are decisions that shape everything downstream. Thinner sheet leaves the tuner less material to work with and less headroom for future retuning, which is why thickness is chosen alongside shell diameter and note range rather than in isolation. Shell forming. Each blank is sunk into a dome, historically by hammer and increasingly by hydraulic press or spinning, then the rim and the shoulder are shaped. Even where a press does the bulk forming, the surface still needs hand work. Presses are a cost saving; they are not by themselves a mark of a bad instrument.

Laying out and raising the tone fields. Note positions are marked, then each field is shaped with a hammer, creating the dome or dimple geometry that produces the harmonic series.

Heat treatment. Nitriding hardens the surface and stabilises the tuning, and requires a gas furnace and controlled temperature, which is why many small makers outsource it. Stainless shells are typically annealed and handled differently. Either way this is a real per-instrument cost.

Tuning, and tuning again. This is the bulk of the labour. Makers describe tens of thousands of hammer strikes across a whole instrument, with published estimates commonly in the range of 25,000 to 50,000. Each is a small correction, checked by ear and by tuning software. The instrument is tuned, rested, and retuned, sometimes several times, because steel relaxes.

Assembly and finish. The two shells are joined (glued, welded or bolted depending on the maker), then finished, oiled and often given a serial number.

Everything that failed. Shells that cracked, notes that would not settle, whole instruments scrapped. The figures that circulate are rules of thumb rather than data, and they cluster around one in ten to one in five. See MAK-08.

And the years. You are paying for the thousand instruments the maker ruined learning, the same way you pay for a luthier’s apprenticeship.

BUY-11Do more expensive handpans actually sound better?#

Short answer. Up to a point, clearly yes. Past roughly the mid range the differences become smaller, more about character than quality, and increasingly inaudible to a beginner and to a phone speaker.

There is a genuine quality curve at the bottom of the market. Between a 350 dollar factory instrument and a 1,400 dollar artisan instrument the gap is not subtle: cleaner partials, longer and smoother sustain, less uncontrolled crosstalk, better tuning stability over time, and a much wider dynamic range so the instrument responds to a light touch. That is a real difference that any listener hears.

Between a 1,600 dollar instrument and a 3,200 dollar one, the picture changes. You are usually buying:

  • greater consistency, meaning less chance of getting a below par example;
  • a specific tonal character the maker is known for, which is a preference not a ranking;
  • more difficult scales and layouts executed cleanly;
  • better after sales support and resale liquidity;
  • and, honestly, some reputation premium.

Two things are worth stating plainly. First, above the mid range the correlation between price and sound quality gets weak. There are expensive instruments that a knowledgeable player would decline and mid priced instruments that outperform their tier. The instrument in front of you matters more than its bracket. Second, most of the recorded handpan music people love was made on instruments that are not at the top of the market, played through microphones and codecs that flatten most of what the extra money buys.

Going deeper. Where high end instruments consistently do separate themselves is at extremes of technique: very quiet playing, fast passages where sustain and crosstalk control matter, and amplified or close mic’d recording where every flaw is exposed. If you play softly, record often, or perform, the money is doing something. If you play at home for pleasure, it is doing much less.

The corollary is a spending rule that most experienced players agree on: buy above the danger zone, buy from someone accountable, and then stop optimising and go and practise.

BUY-12Do handpans hold their value?#

Short answer. Quality instruments from established makers hold value unusually well, commonly reselling in the region of seventy to ninety per cent of what they cost. Cheap factory instruments lose value fast, often half or more.

Why the top of the market holds up: supply is genuinely constrained, demand is steady, the instruments are durable when looked after, and buyers actively look secondhand for names that have long lead times or that have stopped producing. An in demand instrument in a popular scale and good condition can occasionally sell at or near its original price, and a small number of historically significant instruments (original PANArt Hangs above all) have sold for multiples of their release price.

Why the bottom does not: there is no scarcity, new equivalents are cheap, buyers cannot verify condition easily, and a budget instrument that has drifted out of tune may cost more to retune than it is worth.

What actually drives resale value:

  • Maker reputation and whether they are still trading. A maker who is active and supports their instruments helps resale. A maker who vanished can cut either way: no support, but possible scarcity interest.
  • Scale popularity. D Kurd, D Celtic Minor and other common scales sell quickly. Unusual scales can take months to find a buyer, even at a discount.
  • Condition and tuning. Dents in tone fields, deep rust and audible detuning are the main value killers.
  • Documentation. A serial number, original invoice and a recent video of it being played all raise price and speed of sale.
  • Geography. Shipping a handpan internationally is expensive and risky, so your realistic market is often regional.

Two honest caveats. First, “holds value” is not the same as “is an investment”. Selling takes time and effort, and the friction (shipping, payment fees, a case) eats into the difference. Second, the market is thin. There is no index, prices are set by whatever recent private sales people can recall, and figures quoted online are asking prices, not sold prices.

BUY-13What is the cheapest genuinely playable handpan?#

Short answer. As of 2026, the realistic floor for an instrument that is reliably in tune and stays that way is somewhere around 500 to 700 US dollars. Below roughly 400 you are gambling, and below about 250 you are almost certainly looking at a tongue drum or a decorative object rather than a handpan.

The cheap end changed genuinely in the early 2020s. Several volume producers, mostly in Asia but not exclusively, worked out how to make instruments that hold a tuning and sound acceptable, and the sub 900 dollar segment stopped being a joke. Sources tracking the budget market in 2026 broadly agree that the useful band starts around 600 dollars, with a handful of smaller or fewer note models a little below that.

What you are accepting at that price:

  • Variance between units. Two instruments of the same model can differ audibly. This is why a video of your specific instrument matters more here than anywhere else.
  • Shorter, thinner sustain and more crosstalk between neighbouring notes.
  • Less dynamic range. These instruments often need to be struck a bit harder to speak, which is exactly the habit you do not want to learn.
  • Limited or no service. Many volume producers will not retune an instrument, and many independent tuners will not work on one either, partly because the steel and construction do not respond well. A retune costing 150 to 300 dollars also makes little economic sense against a 550 dollar instrument.
  • A narrow catalogue. Mostly the popular symmetrical scales in nine to eleven notes, because those batch well.

Two traps at this end. The first is listings under about 300 dollars described as handpans that are in fact steel tongue drums, which are a different instrument entirely (cut tongues rather than tuned domes, no harmonic partials to speak of). They can be perfectly nice, but know what you are buying. The second is decorative shells with airbrushed artwork, priced by appearance, which have never been properly tuned.

If your ceiling is genuinely under 500, renting or borrowing until you can spend more is usually a better use of the money.

BUY-14Are there payment plans or financing?#

Short answer. Yes, and they are fairly common. Many makers and specialist shops offer staged payments or use a buy now pay later provider, but the terms and the protection they give you vary a great deal, so read them before you commit.

The usual arrangements you will meet in 2026:

  • Maker instalment plans. A deposit followed by staged payments, with the instrument shipped when it is paid in full. Common with makers who build to order anyway, since the build takes months. Usually interest free, usually informal, and usually not covered by any consumer credit protection.
  • Layaway or reservation. You pay in instalments against a specific instrument on a stock list, which is held for you. Ask explicitly what happens if you stop paying: is the deposit refundable, partly refundable, or forfeit?
  • Third party buy now pay later at checkout. Shops using mainstream e-commerce platforms often offer split payments or longer financing through the usual providers. Split-into-instalments products are typically interest free; longer term financing is a credit product with interest and a credit check, and it is regulated differently in different countries.
  • Ordinary credit card. Frequently the best option, and not only for the spreading of cost. See below.

Three things to check before you sign up to anything.

What protection do you keep? This matters more than the interest rate. Paying a maker directly in bank transfer instalments gives you essentially no recourse if the instrument never arrives. Paying by credit card usually does. In the UK, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes the card issuer jointly liable for purchases over 100 pounds and up to 30,000 pounds, and it applies even if you only paid the deposit by card, which is a strong reason to put at least part of a large order on a credit card. Other countries have different but often comparable card protections.

What happens if the build is late or cancelled? Get the refund terms in writing before paying anything.

Does the plan cost more? Some sellers add a fee for instalments. Compare the total, not the monthly figure.

Finally, the unromantic advice: if the only way you can afford an instrument is a credit product you are not comfortable with, wait, rent, or buy a tier lower. The instrument will still be there.
