This is the largest section in the repository. It runs from where to put the instrument on
your first day through to friction technique and playing two pans at once. If you are new,
read Getting started in order and ignore the rest until something in
your playing stops working.
The one idea that runs through all of it: the handpan is a forgiving instrument that rewards
bad technique with acceptable sound. That is why it is so pleasant on day one and why so many
players stall in year two. Almost every answer below is, in some form, about deliberately
doing the thing the instrument does not force you to do.

1 - Advanced technique
Rolls, harmonics, bends, friction sounds, two instruments at once, speed, and whose playing is worth studying.
PLA-26What advanced techniques are there beyond striking notes?#
advanced
Short answer. Rolls, isolated harmonics, pitch bending by pressing the shoulder, friction sounds produced by rubbing the steel, and glissandi across the tone fields. Several of these treat the handpan as a friction idiophone rather than a struck one, which opens a completely different sound world.
Rolls. Rapid repeated notes. There are several distinct approaches. A single stroke roll alternates hands fast on one or two fields. A single hand roll uses successive fingers on one field, like a drum roll played with the fingers. Nadishana teaches a pinky and thumb roll, sometimes called the Nadishana roll, which alternates those two digits on a field and gives an even, fast tremolo, and a fingernail roll explicitly borrowed from flamenco guitar technique, where the nails of successive fingers sweep across the steel. He also teaches pelang, a snapping articulation drawn from Iranian percussion. Each roll has a different timbre, so they are colours rather than substitutes.
Harmonics. Each tone field is tuned so that its octave and compound fifth sit above the fundamental. By striking near the edge of the field, or by damping the field at a node while striking, you can favour those partials and produce a note higher than the field’s nominal pitch. This effectively extends your available range beyond the printed scale. It is fiddly, instrument dependent, and worth the effort: a handpan with nine notes has considerably more than nine available pitches.
Pitch bending. Strike the ding, then press a fingertip into the shoulder where the dome meets the flat, and move the pressure. The added stress changes the resonant frequency of the dome, so the ringing note bends. Rocking the pressure back and forth gives a vibrato or wobble. The same idea works to a lesser extent on tone fields, pressing at the edge of a ringing field. Use moderate pressure: this is deliberate loading of tuned steel, and leaning on it hard is not a good idea.
Friction sounds. Rubbing rather than striking. Dragging a fingertip, a knuckle, the edge of the hand or a dampened palm across the steel produces sustained, singing, ethereal tones with no attack at all. The best known version is “singing the ding”, where friction along the dome excites a sustained pitch; some players use violin rosin on the hand or on the steel to increase grip. Related effects include circular rubbing on the shoulder and dragging across the rim.
Glissando. Sweeping a finger or thumb across several tone fields in one motion. Because the scale is fixed, a gliss always lands harmonically, which makes it an easy and effective flourish. Nail glissandi are brighter, pad glissandi warmer.

PLA-27How do I play two handpans at once?#
advanced
Short answer. Set them up so that both are within relaxed reach, treat them as one instrument with a bigger layout rather than two instruments, and expect the geography to take longer to learn than the technique.
Two pans is common among performing players, usually to extend the range, to add a second scale for harmonic movement, or to combine a melodic instrument with a lower or more percussive one. Hang Massive built much of their sound on two players with complementary instruments; a solo player with two pans is chasing something similar alone.
Setup. Two stands, angled towards each other in a shallow V, at the same height, close enough that you are not reaching. If they are too far apart you will lean and twist, and your accuracy and your back will both suffer. Some players use a single dual stand. Sitting slightly higher than for a single pan helps you see both layouts. A very common mistake is placing them for how they look rather than for reach.
Scale pairing. This is the decision that matters most and it is more musical than technical. Options include two instruments in the same key with different registers (a low pan and a high pan, effectively one wide range instrument); two instruments a fifth or fourth apart, which gives you a chord change; and two instruments whose scales share most notes but differ in one or two, which lets you shift mode without changing key. Pairs that share no common notes are difficult to move between musically. Ask about this before buying a second pan, because a beautiful instrument that does not sit with your first one is an expensive ornament.
Technique. Mostly the same, with three additions. First, one hand per instrument as a starting point, which gives you an ostinato on one and melody on the other and is much easier than it looks because it is just hand independence with more space. Second, crossing over, which is the harder and more expressive move. Third, damping across instruments, since two ringing pans produce twice the wash and need twice the housekeeping.
Practise the geography separately. Learn to hit any note on either pan without looking. Most two pan mistakes are aiming mistakes, not musical ones.

PLA-28How do I play fast without losing tone?#
advanced
Short answer. Speed comes from relaxation, rebound and efficient movement, not from moving faster. If your tone collapses when you speed up, you are almost certainly gripping and lifting rather than dropping and bouncing.
The core problem is that most players’ fast technique is a different technique from their slow technique, rather than the same technique accelerated. At slow tempos you have time to place each note deliberately. At speed there is no time, so whatever your hands do by default is what you get, and if the default includes tension the tone hardens and the contact time lengthens.
What to work on:
Rebound as the engine. At speed you cannot afford to lift the hand actively for each stroke. The bounce off the steel has to carry the hand back up. This is the same mechanic as a drummer using stick rebound, and it is the difference between a technique that gets easier as it gets faster and one that gets harder.
Reduce movement height. Fast passages need small strokes. If your hand travels ten centimetres for each note, you have a tempo ceiling set by physics. Practise the same passage at three heights and notice that the low one is both easier and quieter (see PLA-16 for getting volume back).
Alternate strictly. Hand to hand alternation, or finger to finger within a hand, distributes the work. Passages played with one hand doing most of the strokes will always be slower and less even.
Practise slowly with a metronome, then increase in small steps. The standard method exists because it works: play the passage at a tempo where your tone is perfect, then increase by a small increment, and drop back the instant the tone degrades. The tempo at which your tone breaks is your real current speed, not the tempo at which you can approximately hit the notes.
Use ghost notes to keep the hands moving. Continuous motion at the subdivision, with only some strokes accented, is far easier to sustain than starting and stopping.
Check your weak hand. Speed is capped by the slower hand. Practise it alone.
Adrian Portia, an Australian drummer turned handpan player nicknamed “the hummingbird” for his velocity, is the obvious study for this. Note what a player like that is not doing: no visible tension, no large movements, and a tone that stays warm at tempos where most players’ playing turns into clatter.

PLA-29Which players should I study for technique, and what should I take from each?#
intermediate
Short answer. Study a handful of players deliberately for one specific quality each, rather than trying to absorb everyone. Below is a short list of widely known players and what each is genuinely known for. Steal the quality, not the licks.
Manu Delago (Austria). The most prominent handpan musician in a conventional concert and studio context, and among the earliest serious adopters of the Hang. Trained in percussion with a background across drums, tabla, piano and marimba, and has worked extensively as a composer and collaborator outside handpan circles. Take from him: compositional thinking, arrangement, and the idea that the handpan is an instrument in an ensemble rather than a genre of its own. His teaching emphasises composition and structure over drills.
Daniel Waples, performing as Hang in Balance (England). One of the most widely heard solo players, known for contemplative, spacious playing that blends melodic and rhythmic elements, and for extensive workshop teaching and TEDx appearances. Take from him: space, patience, and the confidence to let a single idea breathe.
Kabeção (Portugal). A self taught multi instrumentalist known for combining serious percussive technique with a melodic, storytelling approach, and for collaborating on instrument layouts with a maker. Take from him: the fusion of percussion and melody in the same hands, and rhythmic drive.
Sam Maher (Australia and New York). Best known for a long improvised piece filmed in the New York subway that reached an enormous audience, and for a percussive, groove led style. Take from him: arpeggiated motion, hand independence and groove variation with ghost notes and fills.
Malte Marten (Germany). A very widely streamed contemporary player and educator, formerly of the duo Yatao, now running a large teaching operation. Take from him: accessible, emotionally direct writing and clear pedagogy.
Hang Massive, Danny Cudd and Markus Offbeat. The duo whose 2011 video “Once Again” introduced millions of people to the instrument. Take from them: two instruments interlocking, and how much can be built from very simple repeating material.
Nadishana (Russia). Multi instrumentalist with a deep world percussion and wind instrument background, and the most systematic teacher of genuinely advanced handpan technique: the pinky and thumb roll, the flamenco derived fingernail roll, pelang, and muting as a groove tool. Take from him: extended technique, and rigour.
David Kuckhermann (Germany). A world percussionist (frame drums, riq, udu, cajon, tonbak) who also plays handpan, and a careful, analytical teacher. Take from him: rhythmic vocabulary imported from other traditions, and how to break a technique down.
Adrian Portia (Australia). A professional drummer before the handpan, known for velocity and technical command. Take from him: speed built on relaxation.
A caveat: reputations circulate faster than facts in this community, and biographical details online are often thin or repeated between sites. Where a claim above is specific, it comes from the player’s own material or a reference source; where it is general, that is deliberate.

2 - Getting started on the handpan
Posture, stands, your first practice sessions, and the honest timeline from first note to sounding musical.
PLA-01How should I hold or position the handpan when I play?#
beginner
Short answer. The default is sitting cross legged on the floor or on a cushion with the instrument resting on your lap, tilted slightly away from you so you can see the whole note layout. Everything else (stands, chairs, standing) is a variation on getting the tone fields within easy reach of relaxed arms.
The instrument needs to be able to ring. That means minimal contact with damping surfaces, so it should sit on your legs or on a stand’s contact points rather than flat on a table or the floor. Resting a handpan flat on a hard surface kills the bottom shell resonance and, on instruments with bottom notes, mutes them outright.
The classic lap position: sit cross legged, place the handpan across your thighs with the ding roughly at your centre line, and tilt the far edge down a few degrees so the layout opens towards you. Your thighs form a natural cradle. A cushion or meditation stool raises your hips above your knees, which lets your spine stack rather than slump. If sitting cross legged is uncomfortable, a low stool or a chair with no armrests works, with thighs roughly parallel to the floor. On a chair the instrument tends to slide forward, so a folded towel or a grippy mat under it helps.
Whatever the position, the test is the same. Both hands should reach every note without you leaning, twisting or lifting a shoulder. If you can only reach the far notes by hunching, the instrument is too far away or too low. If your wrists are bent sharply, it is too high or too flat.
Standing is a performance position rather than a practice one. It needs a stand at roughly waist height, and it changes the physics of your stroke because you are now dropping into the instrument from above rather than reaching across it. Many players find they hit harder standing up without meaning to, so it is worth checking your dynamics on a recording the first few times.
A note on angle: the more you tilt the instrument, the more the sound projects away from you and the less you hear of it. That is comfortable for an audience and slightly disorientating for you. Flat is the opposite. Most players settle somewhere around 10 to 20 degrees.

PLA-02Do I need a stand, and which type should I get?#
beginner
Short answer. No, you do not need one to start, and plenty of excellent players never use one. Get a stand when lap playing starts limiting you: when you cannot reach the far notes comfortably, when you want to play standing, or when you want the bottom shell to ring freely.
The main categories, roughly in order of how many people own them:
Seated stands. Usually an adapted snare drum stand, or a purpose built three or four legged design with rubber or foam contact points. These put the instrument at the same height as your lap but remove your legs from the equation, which frees your body to move and makes crossing hands easier. They also let the bottom shell resonate, which noticeably increases sustain and low end on most instruments. Snare stands are cheap and widely available. The cheapest ones wobble, and a wobbling handpan is both annoying and a hazard, so this is one place where spending a little more is genuinely worth it.
Standing stands. Taller versions of the above, often wooden tripods or crossed leg designs. Less stable by nature because the centre of mass is higher, so a wide footprint matters. Useful for performance, for playing with other standing musicians, and for anyone whose back objects to sitting.
Cushions and rings. A ring cushion, a beanbag style pad or a coiled cloth placed on a table or on your lap. Cheap, packable and surprisingly effective. They damp the bottom shell more than a stand does, which some players actually prefer because it tightens the sound.
Lap only. Free, always available, and the position most tutorial material assumes.
One caution that applies to all stands: if your instrument has bottom notes, check where the contact points land. A support directly under a tuned bottom field will mute it and, over years of constant pressure, is not doing the steel any favours. Rotate the instrument on the stand until the contacts sit on untuned areas or the rim.

PLA-03What is the very first thing I should practise?#
beginner
Short answer. One note, alternating hands, slowly, until every strike sounds identical. That is genuinely it for the first few sessions. Everything else in handpan technique is built on a repeatable, relaxed, bouncing single stroke.
It feels absurdly boring next to the temptation to play something that sounds like music immediately. Do it anyway, but do it in small doses. Five minutes of single note work at the start of a session pays back across every session afterwards.
Here is a first week that works:
- Single note, single hand. Right hand only, on one tone field, one strike per second. Listen to the decay of each note all the way out before the next one. You are training two things: a consistent contact point and the habit of listening.
- Alternating hands on one note. Right, left, right, left. Your non dominant hand will be quieter and duller. Slow down until the two hands match rather than speeding up until they blur.
- Two adjacent notes. Right hand on one, left hand on the other. Then swap which hand takes which note. This is where hand independence starts.
- Walking the scale. Play up and down the note layout in order, one note per beat, alternating hands. Handpan layouts alternate sides as they ascend, so this teaches your hands the geography.
- Ding and one note. Play the ding on beats one and three, a tone field on two and four. Your first groove.
Only after that should you start chasing patterns you have seen online.
The reason for the order is that the handpan gives immediate gratification. Almost anything you play sounds pleasant, because the instrument is tuned to a single scale and the overtones are harmonically related. That is a gift and a trap. It means bad technique gets rewarded with acceptable sound, so nothing forces you to fix it. Deliberately practising the boring foundation is how you avoid plateauing at “pleasant” in eighteen months’ time.

PLA-04How do I get a clean, ringing note instead of a dull thud?#
beginner
Short answer. Get your finger off the steel immediately. A dull thud is almost always a finger that stayed in contact a fraction of a second too long, absorbing the vibration it just created. Strike and bounce, like touching something you suspect is hot.
The physics is simple and unforgiving. The note sounds because the tone field is vibrating. Skin is soft, damp and heavy, and it is an excellent damper. Every millisecond your finger remains on the field after impact, it is soaking up the vibration you paid for. Once your finger is even a millimetre clear, nothing you do in the air changes the sound. So the entire quality of the note is decided in the first few milliseconds of contact and release.
Four things to check, in order of how often they are the culprit:
Contact time. The single biggest one. Think of your hand as a bouncing ball rather than a hammer. The rebound is not decoration, it is the technique.
Contact area. Use the fleshy pad of the fingertip, not the very tip and not the nail. A small hard contact point produces a clicky, thin attack. Too much finger and palm produces a soft, muffled one. Coming in at a slight angle rather than dead perpendicular tends to give the warmest result.
Where on the note. Aim for the tone field itself, not the dimple in the centre and not the edge. The dimple is there to suppress unwanted high frequencies, so striking it directly gives you a duller, more muted note. Some players use that deliberately as a colour.
Tension. A stiff wrist and a tight shoulder produce a stiff, choked sound. The motion should come from a loose wrist with the arm mostly along for the ride. If your forearm is doing the work, you will get tired, loud and dull all at once.
If you have checked all four and one particular note still sounds dead compared to its neighbours, the problem may not be you. Notes near a contact point on a stand, or a field that has been knocked out of tune, will genuinely refuse to sing. Play the same note with the instrument held differently to rule the instrument in or out.

PLA-05Why does my handpan sound bad when I play it and good when someone else does?#
beginner
Short answer. Partly technique and partly acoustics. Their bounce and touch really are better than yours if they have played longer, but a large part of the difference is that you are hearing your own instrument from the worst seat in the house.
Take the acoustics first, because it is the part nobody warns you about. When you play, your head is directly above the instrument, roughly 40 to 60 centimetres from the tone fields, with the sound projecting outwards and downwards away from you. You hear a lot of attack, a lot of the nearest few notes, and comparatively little of the blended, bloomy resonance that carries into a room. A listener two metres away hears the notes mixed together in air, with the room’s reflections filling in the sustain. The instrument genuinely does sound better out there.
This is why the first time most players hear a recording of themselves from a couple of metres away, they are pleasantly surprised. It is worth doing early. Put a phone on a chair three metres away, play for two minutes, and listen back. You will get a far more honest picture of where you actually are than your own ears give you.
Then the technique part, which is real. An experienced player is doing several things you probably are not:
- Releasing faster, so every note rings fully.
- Varying dynamics constantly, so the loud notes have something to be loud against.
- Leaving space. Beginners fill every gap. The instrument has a long decay and needs room to bloom.
- Using both hands with equal quality, so the rhythm does not lurch every time the weak hand plays.
- Damping deliberately when the sustain gets muddy, rather than letting everything ring into a wash.
There is also an instrument variable. If a visiting player makes your handpan sound transformed, that is technique. If they make it sound only slightly better than you do, and their own instrument sounds much better than yours in the same room, that is a difference in the instrument.

PLA-06How long will it take before I sound good?#
beginner
Short answer. You will sound pleasant within an hour, sound like you know what you are doing within a few months of regular practice, and sound like a player with a voice of their own after a couple of years. The instrument front loads its rewards more than almost any other.
That first hour is not an illusion. Because a handpan is tuned to a single scale and its tone fields ring with harmonically related overtones, wrong notes essentially do not exist. Strike anything in any order and it will be consonant. This is why videos of people playing for the first time sound better than videos of people picking up a violin for the first time, and it is a genuine and lovely feature of the instrument.
What takes longer is everything that separates pleasant noodling from music:
Weeks 1 to 4. Clean single strikes, both hands roughly equal, the note layout memorised well enough that you are not hunting.
Months 2 to 6. A steady internal pulse. Basic grooves that hold together. Enough hand independence to keep a rhythm going in one hand while the other does something else. This is the stage where most people start being able to play something they would happily play to a friend.
Months 6 to 24. The hard, interesting part. Dynamics, phrasing, silence, the ability to develop an idea over four minutes rather than restating it. Percussive techniques used musically instead of sprinkled on. Playing a piece the same way twice, and playing it differently on purpose.
Beyond. A personal vocabulary. This is not a technique milestone, it is a taste milestone.
Two honest caveats. First, prior musical experience compresses this enormously. A drummer arrives with the pulse and the hands already built and mostly needs to learn the geography. Second, plenty of players stall permanently at month six, not from lack of talent but because the instrument’s forgiving nature means nothing ever forces them to progress. Deliberate practice is the difference.

PLA-07Can I teach myself, or do I need a teacher?#
beginner
Short answer. You can absolutely teach yourself the handpan, and most players largely do. But a handful of lessons early on, even just two or three, will save you months of habits that are painful to unlearn.
The self teaching case is strong. There is no standard repertoire you must be shepherded through, no exam board, no fingering orthodoxy. The instrument is intuitive by design and there is an enormous amount of free instructional material. Many well known players are substantially self taught, and the community’s culture is friendly to it.
The case for at least some teaching is narrower but specific. There are exactly a few things that are hard to fix alone:
Touch. You cannot hear your own contact time properly from the playing position, and a teacher can spot in ten seconds what a video cannot tell you about your own hands.
Tension. Almost every self taught player develops some. Left alone it becomes wrist and forearm pain, and it caps your speed and dynamics permanently.
Weak hand neglect. Self teaching drifts towards whatever already sounds good, which means the dominant hand does more and gets better, which widens the gap.
Rhythmic vagueness. If you have never played a rhythmic instrument, you may not know that your pulse is wobbling. It is very hard to hear this in yourself.
A sensible middle path: learn the basics from free videos, then take two or three one to one lessons (in person or over video call) once you have enough vocabulary for a teacher’s feedback to land. Ask specifically for a technique audit rather than repertoire. Then go back to self teaching and return for another lesson when you feel stuck.
One thing to be wary of: online material varies wildly in quality, and a lot of it is made by people who bought a handpan eighteen months ago. Prefer teachers whose own playing you would want to sound like, and who explain mechanisms rather than only demonstrating.

PLA-08How long should I practise each day?#
beginner
Short answer. Twenty focused minutes a day beats two hours at the weekend. Frequency builds motor skills; duration mostly builds fatigue.
Motor learning consolidates between sessions rather than during them, which is why daily contact matters more than session length. Fifteen to thirty minutes most days is a realistic and effective target for someone learning alongside a job.
A structure that works for a 30 minute session:
- 5 minutes warm up and technique. Single strokes, alternating hands, slow. Listening to tone quality, not playing anything musical.
- 10 minutes deliberate work. One specific thing you cannot currently do, practised slowly enough that you get it right most times. A rhythm, a hand independence exercise, a passage of a piece.
- 10 minutes playing. Improvise, play things you already know, enjoy yourself. This is not wasted time, it is where technique becomes musical.
- 5 minutes exploring. Try something you have no idea how to do. Rubbing the shell, playing the rim, a technique from a video.
The proportions matter more than the numbers. If your practice is 30 minutes of pleasant improvising, you are having a nice time but you are not improving. If it is 30 minutes of drills, you will burn out and you will not learn to make music. Both halves are required.
Two practical points. First, the handpan is physically undemanding compared with most percussion, but it is not free. Repetitive strain in wrists and forearms is real, particularly for players who practise long sessions with tension. If anything aches, stop, and treat the ache as a technique diagnostic rather than a toughness test. Second, sustain is your enemy in long sessions. After 40 minutes of continuous playing, your ears stop hearing the decay clearly and your dynamics flatten. Short breaks reset this.
Finally, the ceiling is not fixed. Players preparing for a performance or recording will practise far more, and there is nothing wrong with a two hour session if you want one. The daily minimum is what protects progress; the maximum is up to you and your body.

3 - Hand technique
What actually touches the steel, how it touches it, and which habits produce tone rather than damage.
PLA-09Which part of the hand should strike the note?#
beginner
Short answer. For ordinary melodic playing, the fleshy pad just behind the fingertip of the index, middle or ring finger, arriving at a slight angle. Everything else (thumb, knuckle, palm, flat finger) is a deliberate colour rather than a default.
Think of the hand as a small set of beaters with different masses and hardnesses, exactly as a percussionist thinks about sticks and mallets.
Fingertip pad. The workhorse. Enough flesh to avoid a clicky attack, enough definition to keep the note clear. Index and middle fingers do most of the work. Ring and little fingers are weaker and duller at first and are worth deliberately training, because they unlock rolls and fast passages later.
Very tip of the finger, near the nail. Harder and brighter, with more attack and less body. Useful for cutting through an ensemble or for a crisp, dry articulation. Nail contact goes further in the same direction and is the basis of the fingernail roll borrowed from flamenco guitar technique.
Thumb. The meaty side of the thumb pad is a heavier, warmer beater. Widely used on the ding, and useful on tone fields when you want weight without brightness. The thumb also has more independent power than the outer fingers, which makes it valuable in ostinato patterns.
The middle joint of the index or middle finger. A common ding stroke. More mass than a fingertip, softer than a knuckle.
Knuckle. Loud, hard and bright. Reserve it for the untuned areas: the rim, the sides, the interstitial metal between fields. Repeatedly knuckling tuned tone fields is one of the few playing habits with a plausible route to detuning the instrument, so treat tone fields as fingertip territory.
Flat finger or flat hand. Used for slaps on untuned areas and for damping, not for producing notes.
The “pointer finger bounce” that beginner lessons often name is simply the basic stroke isolated: index finger, pad contact, immediate rebound, motion from the wrist. It gets a name because it is the one thing that has to become automatic before anything else works.

PLA-10What is the bounce, and why should I never press into the steel?#

Short answer. The bounce is the immediate rebound of the finger off the tone field after contact. You never press in because your hand is a damper: any contact after the initial strike absorbs the vibration you just created, and the note dies.
Mechanically, striking a handpan is an impulse. You deliver energy in a very short collision and the tone field converts it into a vibrating mode set: the fundamental, plus the octave and the compound fifth that the tuner deliberately placed above it. Those modes ring for several seconds because the steel is thin, well tensioned and lightly loaded. Skin is the opposite of that: soft, wet and lossy. Left in contact, it removes energy from exactly the frequencies you want to keep.
So the sound is decided in the first few milliseconds, and everything after release is out of your hands. This has a liberating consequence worth internalising: once your finger is clear, you cannot improve the note by wanting it to be better, and you cannot ruin it either. All the craft is in contact and release.
How to build it:
Drop, do not push. Let gravity and a relaxed wrist do the work. If you are pushing the finger down with muscular effort, the same muscles are still engaged at the moment you should be leaving.
Think bouncing ball. One continuous fluid arc up and down, not a down stroke followed by a separate decision to come back. Players who consciously “lift” after the strike are always slightly late.
Practise the extreme. Deliberately press into a note and hold. Listen to how dead it is. Then strike and snap away. The contrast makes the ear learn faster than any description.
Use the rebound as free energy. At speed, the rebound is what carries the hand back up for the next stroke. Fighting it is why fast passages get tiring and dull at the same time.
Two exceptions worth knowing. Damping (PLA-14) is deliberate contact used as an effect. And pitch bending (PLA-26) uses sustained pressure on the shoulder to change a ringing note’s pitch, which is contact used as an instrument in its own right. Neither contradicts the rule; both are the rule being broken on purpose.

PLA-11How do I strike the ding, a tone field and the shoulder differently?#

Short answer. Tone fields want a light fingertip pad near the middle of the field, avoiding the dimple. The ding wants a heavier, softer contact (thumb pad or the middle joint of a finger) on or near the top of the dome. The shoulder around the ding is not a note at all but a resonant surface that gives you overtones and percussive colour.
These three areas behave differently because they are structurally different pieces of steel.
Tone fields. Each is an oval or lens shaped area of thinned, tensioned steel, tuned so that its fundamental, octave and compound fifth line up. Aim for the body of the field rather than its dead centre. The dimple in the middle exists partly to control unwanted high partials, so striking directly on it gives a shorter, duller, more muted note. That is occasionally what you want. Striking too near the edge, where the field meets the untuned steel around it, gives a thinner and more overtone heavy result, which is one way of reaching for harmonics.
The ding. Usually the lowest note, sitting in the centre as a dome (convex on most instruments, concave on some). It has more mass and a longer, deeper decay, and it is easy to overplay. Because it is the root of the scale, a hard ding stroke swamps everything else in the mix for a second or more. Most experienced players hit the ding noticeably softer than they hit tone fields, and that restraint is a large part of why their playing sounds balanced. Strike the top of the dome for the fullest fundamental; strike off centre, towards where the dome meets the flat, for a brighter and more complex sound.
The shoulder. The flat annular band between the base of the ding and the rest of the top shell. It is untuned in the sense that no one tuned a pitch into it, but it is far from silent. Struck with a fingertip or the side of a finger, it gives a bright, short, drum like tap that sits above the scale without belonging to it, which makes it very useful as a rhythmic voice that never clashes harmonically. It is also where you press to bend the ding.
Getting the balance between these three is one of the clearest markers of an intermediate player. Beginners play tone fields loudly and the ding louder still, and use the shoulder not at all.

PLA-12What are ghost notes and slaps, and how do I use them?#

Short answer. A ghost note is a very quiet strike, often barely audible, that keeps the pulse alive between the notes you actually want heard. A slap is a firm strike with a flat finger or fingers on an untuned area, producing a dry percussive crack with no pitch. Together they turn a melody into a groove.
Ghost notes. The term comes from drum kit and bass vocabulary and means the same thing here. You play the subdivision, but at perhaps 10 to 20 per cent of your normal volume, so it registers as texture and timing rather than as a note. On the handpan they can be played on tone fields (barely audible pitch), on the interstitial metal, or as an almost silent touch that produces mostly the sound of skin on steel.
Their function is threefold. They keep your hands moving continuously, which is what makes fast passages possible without lurching. They imply a subdivision the listener feels but does not consciously hear, which is most of what “groove” actually is. And they give you somewhere to put the beats you are not accenting, so your accents mean something.
The practice route: play a simple pattern of accented notes with a ghost note on every subdivision in between. Right left right left, unbroken, with only some strokes accented. Then remove accents and add them elsewhere. The hand motion never changes; only the dynamics do. This is the single most transferable idea in handpan rhythm.
Slaps. A flat finger or two, struck firmly against untuned steel, usually the area between two tone fields, the shoulder, or the side of the instrument. There is no pitch, or very little, so it functions like a snare or a rim shot. Terminology varies across teachers; some call a slap on the side wall a “tak”, and knuckle strikes on hard untuned areas a “knock”. No single vocabulary is standard across the handpan world, so expect the same gesture to have three names.
Use slaps sparingly and consistently. A slap on the same subdivision every bar becomes a backbeat, and a backbeat is what makes a listener nod. Slaps sprinkled randomly just sound busy.

PLA-13What can I do with the gu and the bottom shell?#
intermediate
Short answer. The gu is the port in the bottom shell. Cupping and uncupping your hand over it while notes ring produces a wow or throb; striking around it gives you a deep bass tone; and the bottom shell as a whole is a large, low pitched drum head you can play with fingers and palm.
The Helmholtz effect. The shell plus the gu opening form a Helmholtz resonator, the same physics as blowing across a bottle neck. On most handpans the gu is tuned, often to the root or another note of the scale. If you strike near the gu, or slap the bottom shell with an open palm, you excite that resonance and get a low, breathy, pitched thump. Cupping your hand over the opening and moving it changes the effective neck of the resonator, which bends the pitch and produces the characteristic wobbling “wow” sound. Done under a ringing chord it is a very effective way to add movement without adding notes.
Striking the gu edge. A finger or thumb on the raised lip around the opening gives a short percussive click, sometimes with a hint of the gu pitch. Some instruments have a pronounced lip and others barely any, so how useful this is varies by maker.
Bottom notes. Many modern handpans have tuned notes on the bottom shell, often lower extension notes or a second register. Playing them requires either tipping the instrument, playing it on a stand from underneath, or reaching around, and none of these are comfortable at speed. Most players use bottom notes as occasional low anchors rather than as part of running melodic lines. If your instrument sits on a stand, check that the contact points are not sitting on the bottom notes and muting them.
The bottom shell as a drum. Palm and finger strikes on untuned areas of the bottom shell give a deep, dry, tom like sound with far less sustain than the top. Held on the lap this is awkward; on a stand, or tipped up in performance, it becomes a genuine second voice.
A caution. The bottom shell on many instruments is thinner and less structurally protected than the top, and it is where the glue seam lives. Play it with hands, not with anything hard, and do not treat it as a djembe.

PLA-14How do I mute and damp notes deliberately?#

Short answer. Rest a finger, the side of a hand, or a palm on a ringing tone field to stop it. Used deliberately, damping is what gives handpan playing rhythmic definition, because the instrument’s long sustain otherwise blurs everything into a wash.
This is the same skin damping described in PLA-10, applied on purpose. The techniques worth having:
Stopping a single note. Land a finger on the field you want silenced. Useful for cutting a note short so a rhythm reads clearly, and for clearing a note that clashes with what comes next.
Playing muted notes. Strike a field with one finger while another finger of the same hand rests on it. You get the attack, almost no sustain, and a dry pitched thud. This is the handpan equivalent of a muted guitar string, and it is extremely useful for filling subdivisions without adding sustain to the mix.
Half muting. Light contact, or contact near the edge of the field, shortens the decay without killing it. This gives you a continuous dial between fully open and fully dead, and it is worth exploring, because handpan playing is often described in binary terms when the interesting territory is in between.
Global damping. A forearm or flat hand laid across several fields, or a palm on the shoulder, kills a large part of the instrument at once. Used at the end of a phrase or a piece, this produces a clean stop rather than a slow fade.
Pre damping. Damping a note just before you strike another, so the two do not overlap. Beginners let everything ring and end up with three or four notes sounding simultaneously by accident, which on a pentatonic instrument sounds fine but never sounds articulate.
The reason damping matters so much on this instrument specifically is the decay time. A well made handpan tone field can ring for five seconds or more. Play eight notes in two seconds and all eight are still sounding at the end. Nadishana’s advanced course treats muting as a core groove technique for exactly this reason: it is not a special effect, it is how you get rhythm out of a very sustaining instrument.

PLA-15How do I use the rim and the mantle for percussive colour?#
intermediate
Short answer. The untuned metal, the flange where the two shells join and the curved side wall, gives you dry, pitchless percussion that never clashes with the scale. Treat it as your snare, your rim shot and your woodblock.
Terminology first, because it is inconsistent. The joined edge where the two half shells meet is usually called the rim or the flange. The curved side wall of the instrument is called the side, the mantle or (loosely) the rim, depending on which maker or teacher you ask. There is no agreed standard vocabulary across the handpan world, so if a tutorial says something you do not recognise, it may just be a regional name for a surface you already use.
What each area gives you:
The rim or flange. Hard, bright and short. A fingertip or nail on the rim is a click; a knuckle is a crack. Because the flange is a thick, non resonant edge, it is one of the few places where a hard strike is not a tuning risk. It cuts through in an ensemble.
The side wall. Slapped with flat fingers, it gives a fuller, more drum like tak with a little body to it. This is the classic percussive accent in a lot of handpan grooves. Where you slap it changes the tone: nearer the flange is drier, nearer the middle of the curve is fuller.
Interstitial metal on the top shell. The untuned steel between tone fields. Struck with a fingertip it gives a soft, muted tap that sits nicely under a melody, because it is close to your hands and does not require a big movement.
The shoulder. Covered in PLA-11, but worth repeating here: it is your brightest available untuned surface within easy reach of the ding.
Two practical points. First, these sounds are much quieter than tone fields to your ear at the playing position but carry surprisingly well to a listener, and they can dominate a close microphone. If you record, check the balance rather than trusting the playing position. Second, hard strikes near a tone field’s edge can affect the field, so keep knuckles on the flange and the side wall, and use fingertips on the interstitial areas of the top shell.

PLA-16How do I get more volume without hitting harder?#
intermediate
Short answer. Volume on a handpan comes from clean energy transfer and from what surrounds the instrument, not from force. Faster release, more mass behind the stroke, a resonating bottom shell and better contrast will all make you sound louder than hitting harder does.
Hitting harder has diminishing returns quickly. Past a certain point the extra force goes into high frequency clatter and into deforming the field momentarily rather than into the tuned modes, so the note gets harsher and more percussive but not much louder. It also shortens sustain, because an overdriven field does not ring as cleanly. And it is the one playing habit with a credible path to long term tuning damage.
What actually works:
Release faster. A note that rings for five seconds is perceptibly louder than the same strike damped to two, because loudness is integrated over time. Improving your bounce is the cheapest volume increase available.
Get the instrument off your legs. A stand that lets the bottom shell and the gu breathe adds noticeable low end and sustain. Lap playing damps a substantial fraction of the instrument.
Use more mass, not more speed. A relaxed hand dropping from a slightly greater height, or a thumb pad instead of a fingertip, delivers more energy at the same or lower impact velocity. That gives you a fuller, warmer loud rather than a harder one.
Improve your contact. A mistimed or glancing strike wastes most of its energy. Accuracy is volume.
Create contrast. This is the big one and it is psychological rather than acoustic. If everything you play is at 80 per cent, nothing sounds loud. If your baseline is 40 per cent, a 70 per cent accent lands like a hammer. Players who sound powerful are usually playing quieter on average than players who sound thin.
Consider the room, or a microphone. The handpan is a genuinely quiet instrument. It does not compete with a djembe, a guitar strummed hard or a busy room, and no technique will fix that. In an ensemble or a noisy space, the answer is amplification, not effort.

PLA-17Which technique mistakes can actually damage the tuning?#
beginner
Short answer. Sustained hard striking on tuned tone fields, especially with knuckles, hard objects or drumsticks, is the realistic playing related risk. Ordinary enthusiastic fingertip playing does not detune a well made instrument. Most detuning in practice comes from impacts and mishandling rather than from playing.
It is worth being precise here, because this topic attracts both complacency and paranoia.
The mechanism. A tone field is thin steel held under a carefully balanced pattern of internal stress. Its pitch depends on that stress state and on its geometry. Anything that plastically deforms the steel, even by a tiny amount, or that redistributes stress, shifts the pitch. Elastic vibration (what happens when you play it properly) does not do this. Plastic deformation from a hard, concentrated impact does.
Genuine risks, in order:
- Dropping the instrument, or knocking it against a hard edge. By a wide margin the most common cause of a detuned handpan. Nothing you do with your hands compares.
- Drumsticks and hard mallets on tone fields. Do not. The contact is hard, small and repeatable, which is precisely the recipe.
- Habitual heavy knuckle strikes on tone fields. Knuckles are fine on the flange and side wall. On tuned steel, they are a concentrated hard impact.
- Rings and long hard fingernails. A metal ring striking a tone field is a small hammer.
- Consistently very hard fingertip playing over years. This is a real but slow effect, and makers disagree about how significant it is compared with everything else on this list.
Not risks, despite the folklore. Playing loudly with relaxed fingertips. Playing every day. Playing the rim and the side wall. Using soft mallets on the shell (though views differ, and any mallet on tone fields deserves caution).
Non playing causes that matter more than technique. Heat, particularly a car in the sun; rapid temperature change; moisture and rust on untreated carbon steel; pressure from a stand contact point sitting on a tuned field for years; and stacking anything on top of the instrument.
If a note starts sounding sour, wolfy or beating against itself, that is a tuning issue rather than a technique issue, and it is a job for a tuner.

4 - Learning and practice
Where to learn, how to judge a teacher, how to structure practice, and what to do when you stop improving.
PLA-30What are the best ways to learn, and how do I evaluate a teacher?#
beginner
Short answer. Use free video material for the basics, a structured online course for a progression that goes somewhere, and a small number of one to one lessons for the things you cannot see in yourself. Festivals and jams are where you improve fastest per hour, and they are not primarily about instruction.
Free video. Enormous quantity, very variable quality, and no progression. Excellent for a specific question (“how do I play a slap?”) and poor as a curriculum, because the algorithm will show you what is popular rather than what you need next. Use it deliberately, searching for a specific problem, rather than browsing.
Structured online courses. The main option most players use. Platforms and course libraries exist specifically for handpan, and several well known players teach through them, including masterclass style courses from named artists. The value is sequencing: someone has decided what order things come in, which is precisely what free video lacks. Costs range from free introductory material to subscriptions and one off course purchases. Check whether a course includes any feedback mechanism, because a video course with no feedback cannot tell you your technique is wrong.
One to one lessons. In person or over video call. The highest value per hour for technique correction, because a teacher can see tension, contact time and weak hand asymmetry that you cannot. Even two or three lessons are worth it.
Festivals and gatherings. There is an international circuit of handpan festivals and gatherings across Europe, North America and elsewhere, typically combining concerts, workshops and open jamming. Three days at one of these will do more for most players than three months at home, largely because you play with other people, hear a lot of instruments, and see technique in the flesh at close range.
Jams and local groups. Playing with others exposes every weakness in your timing immediately and is the fastest route to a reliable pulse.
Evaluating a teacher. Ask yourself:
- Do you want to sound like they sound? If not, look elsewhere, however good their marketing.
- Do they explain mechanisms, or only demonstrate? “Watch me do this” teaches much less than “here is why this produces that sound”.
- Do they diagnose your playing, or deliver a fixed syllabus regardless?
- Do they talk about relaxation, dynamics and listening, or only about patterns?
- Do they have experience teaching, as opposed to experience playing? These are different skills.
- Are their claims about the instrument physically plausible? A teacher who is loose with acoustics may be loose with technique too.

PLA-31How should I structure practice so that I actually improve?#

Short answer. Split every session into technique, one specific difficulty, free playing, and exploration. The part that produces improvement is the second one, and it is the part almost everyone skips.
The failure mode is specific and near universal: practice becomes playing. You sit down, you play things you can already play, you enjoy it, you stand up. That is a valuable activity and it is not practice, and the difference explains most of the players who have owned an instrument for five years and sound like they have owned it for one.
A session template. Scale the minutes to the time you have.
- Technique, 15 per cent. Single strokes, alternating hands, slow, listening only to tone quality. Both hands. This is a warm up and a diagnostic: if your tone is off today, you find out here rather than three minutes into a piece.
- Deliberate work, 35 per cent. One thing you cannot currently do. Slow enough that you succeed most attempts. Stop when it is right, not when time is up.
- Free playing, 35 per cent. Improvise, play your pieces, enjoy it. This is where technique becomes music and where you find new material.
- Exploration, 15 per cent. Something you have no idea how to do. A new technique, a new rhythm, an unfamiliar corner of the instrument. Zero expectations.
What makes the deliberate work actually work:
- Pick one thing. Not “get better at rhythm”. “Play a slap on the and of 2 while the left hand keeps the ding on 1 and 3.”
- Go slow enough to succeed. If you are getting it wrong half the time, you are practising getting it wrong. Halve the tempo.
- Use a metronome for anything rhythmic. Handpan players resist this more than any other percussionists, and it shows.
- Isolate. Practise the hard bar, not the whole piece around it.
- Vary the practice. Same passage at different tempos, dynamics and hand assignments, rather than fifty identical repetitions.
- Stop before it degrades. Once tension creeps in, further repetition is training the tension.
Track it. A one line note per session (“worked on 7/8 grouping, still rushing the third group”) turns four weeks of vague effort into visible progress and stops you restarting the same thing every week.

PLA-32How do I get past a plateau and stay motivated?#
intermediate
Short answer. Plateaus on the handpan are almost always caused by the instrument being too forgiving: nothing forces you to change, so you do not. Break the plateau by introducing an external constraint, an audience, or a genuinely new skill, and accept that the fix is usually structural rather than a matter of trying harder.
Diagnose first. Plateaus have different causes and different cures.
Technique plateau. Your tone or speed stopped improving. Usually tension, or a weak hand you have been quietly avoiding. A lesson or a technique audit is the fastest fix, because it is very hard to see this in yourself.
Vocabulary plateau. You play the same patterns every time. This is the most common one and PLA-18 is the direct answer: constraints, banned notes, rhythm first.
Musical plateau. Your playing is technically fine and does not go anywhere. The missing skills are structure, dynamics and silence rather than technique. Study composition, listen to music that is not handpan music, and record yourself.
Motivation plateau. You still love the sound but you are not picking it up. Usually caused by practice with no destination.
What actually breaks them:
Give yourself a deadline with a witness. Agree to play three pieces at a friend’s house in six weeks. A commitment to another person changes practice behaviour more reliably than any resolution to yourself.
Play with other people. A drummer, a guitarist, a singer, a jam night. Other musicians expose your timing instantly and demand things you would never demand of yourself.
Learn someone else’s piece note for note. Handpan culture is improvisation heavy and learning repertoire is unfashionable, which is a shame, because copying a piece exactly forces you into someone else’s habits and out of your own.
Change the instrument’s context. Play in a different room, on a stand instead of your lap, with a microphone, with reverb, outdoors. Novelty in the setup produces novelty in the playing.
Go to a festival or a workshop. The single most reliable plateau breaker, for reasons that are as much social as musical.
Take a deliberate break. Two weeks away is not a failure. Players frequently return and find something has consolidated in their absence, which is exactly what motor learning research would predict.
And one honest note: everyone who plays this instrument goes through a phase of finding their own playing boring. It is a sign that your ears have improved faster than your hands, which is uncomfortable and is also the necessary order for things to happen in.

5 - Rhythm and musicality
Getting past pleasant noodling: pulse, groove, melody over rhythm, dynamics, improvisation, composition and endings.
PLA-18How do I stop playing the same thing every time I sit down?#
intermediate
Short answer. Impose a constraint before you start. The rut exists because the instrument is forgiving and your hands have found a comfortable loop, and the only reliable cure is deliberately closing off the comfortable option.
Almost every handpan player hits this, usually somewhere between six months and two years. The symptom is that you sit down, your hands go to the same three notes, and four minutes later you have played the same thing you played yesterday. It is not lack of imagination. It is that nothing is stopping you.
Constraints that work, roughly in order of how quickly they break the pattern:
Ban notes. Play a whole improvisation without touching the ding. Or without touching your two favourite tone fields. Or using only the three highest notes. Removing the note your hands default to forces new pathways immediately.
Ban a hand. Play left hand only for five minutes. Then right hand only. Your weak hand does not know your habits, which is exactly why it is useful.
Start from rhythm, not melody. Set a pulse with slaps and ghost notes only, no pitched notes at all, for a full minute. Then add pitches into the rhythm you already have. Most ruts are melodic patterns with rhythm bolted on; reversing the order changes everything.
Change the tempo drastically. Play at half your usual speed. Long decays, huge gaps, one note every two seconds. Then double your usual speed. Both extremes reveal material the comfortable middle hides.
Start on a different note. If you always begin on the root, begin on the fifth or the seventh. It reframes the whole scale.
Play to something. A metronome at an awkward tempo, a drone, a field recording, a track you like with the melody muted. External input pushes you out of your loop.
Record yourself and listen back critically. Painful and effective. You will hear the loop from the outside, and you will hear exactly where you always go next.
Do one constraint per session rather than all of them. The point is not variety for its own sake but discovering material you would not otherwise find, then bringing the good bits back into your ordinary playing.

Short answer. In three layers. Establish a pulse, add a backbone rhythm with one or two strong accents, then fill the gaps with ghost notes and quiet fills. Build them in that order and do not move to the next layer until the previous one is steady without you thinking about it.
Layer one: the pulse. Pick a tempo and internalise it. Play one note per beat, dead even, for a minute. This is more boring and more important than it sounds. If your pulse wobbles, nothing built on it will groove, no matter how clever it is. A metronome is useful here and most handpan players avoid it for far too long.
Layer two: the backbone. Two or three placements per bar that define the feel. Typically a low note or ding on the downbeat and a slap somewhere that functions as a backbeat. In a four beat bar, a ding on 1 and a slap on 3 is the simplest possible groove and it works. Move the slap to the “and” of 2 and it becomes something else entirely. Spend real time on this layer: almost all the identity of a groove lives in where the accents are, not in how many notes you play.
Layer three: filling the gaps. Now your hands move continuously on the subdivision, playing ghost notes everywhere the backbone is not. The ghost notes carry timing and texture; the backbone carries the feel. This is where handpan grooves start to sound like the recordings you admire. Crucially the ghost notes are quiet: if they are as loud as the backbone, you have a fast pattern rather than a groove.
Layer four, optional: melody. Covered in PLA-20.
Two things that most improve grooves once the layers are in place. First, damping. Because the instrument sustains, a groove that reads clearly needs notes to be stopped as well as started. Second, space. Leave one placement empty where the listener expects a note and the groove suddenly breathes.
Listen to drummers and hand percussionists rather than only to handpan players for this. Frame drum, tabla and West African vocabularies transfer directly, and several prominent handpan players (David Kuckhermann, for one, whose background is in frame drums, riq, udu and other hand percussion) got their groove sense from exactly there.

PLA-20How do I play melody and rhythm at the same time?#

Short answer. Give each hand a job, make the rhythm hand’s job so automatic that you stop thinking about it, and only then add the melody with the other hand. Hand independence is built, not discovered.
The end goal is that one hand maintains a repeating rhythmic figure (a low ostinato, a slap pattern, a pulse on one or two notes) while the other plays a melodic line that moves freely over the top. Handpan layouts help here: the notes alternate sides as the scale ascends, so the two hands naturally divide the instrument.
A workable progression:
- Rhythm hand alone. Left hand plays your ostinato, say the ding on beats 1 and 3, for two minutes without varying. It should become as unconscious as walking.
- Add one melody note. Right hand plays a single note on beat 1 only, on top of the ostinato. Then only on beat 2. Then only on the “and” of 2. Placing one note against a steady pattern is where independence actually lives.
- Two melody notes. Then three. Add them one at a time, staying slow enough that the ostinato never falters. The moment the left hand wobbles, you have gone too fast: back off.
- Melody in unison, then displaced. Play the melody exactly with the ostinato, then shift it by one subdivision. Displacement is a technique in its own right and Manu Delago names it among his performance tools.
- Swap hands. Whatever you have built, build it the other way round. This is unglamorous and it doubles what you can do.
Two shortcuts that are not cheating. First, some patterns are naturally interlocking, where the two hands alternate strictly and the “independence” is really one composite pattern split between hands. Learning to hear composite patterns rather than two separate parts makes a lot of intimidating material easy. Second, you do not need continuous independence to sound like you have it. A rhythm that pauses for a bar while the melody moves, then resumes, reads to a listener as two parts.

PLA-21How do I play in odd time signatures?#

Short answer. Stop counting the whole bar and start feeling it as a chain of twos and threes. Seven is not “one two three four five six seven”, it is 3+2+2 or 2+2+3, and once you feel the grouping the bar stops being odd and starts being a pattern.
Odd metres are common in handpan music, partly because the instrument’s roots and repertoire draw on Balkan, Middle Eastern and Indian traditions where 5, 7, 9 and 11 are ordinary, and partly because a scale with eight or nine notes invites patterns that do not divide neatly by four.
How to actually get there:
Learn the additive grouping. Say it out loud as long and short units. For 7/8: “ONE two three, ONE two, ONE two” (3+2+2). For 5/8: 3+2 or 2+3, which feel completely different. For 9/8: 2+2+2+3 gives you the Balkan feel, 3+3+3 gives you something closer to a compound triple. Speak the pattern before you play it. If you cannot say it, you cannot play it.
Put the accents in your hands. Play a slap on the first stroke of each group and ghost notes on the rest. Now the bar has shape rather than length.
Loop very short. One bar, over and over, for several minutes, until it stops feeling like counting and starts feeling like a groove. This is the whole trick. Odd time is not intellectually difficult, it is unfamiliar, and unfamiliarity is cured by repetition rather than by understanding.
Then break the accents. Once the grouping is internal, playing across it is where the interesting music is: a melody in a three note pattern over a bar of seven will phase against the pulse and resolve every three bars.
Also try odd groupings inside even bars. Playing groups of three over a 4/4 pulse gives you a hemiola feel with none of the counting difficulty, and to a listener it sounds just as sophisticated.
A practical note: if you are going to play odd metres with other people, agree on the grouping explicitly, not just the number. Two players both counting seven but grouping it differently will fall apart within a bar.

PLA-22How do I use dynamics and phrasing?#

Short answer. Play quieter on average than feels natural, so that you have somewhere to go. Dynamics are relative, and a player with a wide range sounds expressive at any absolute volume, while a player at a constant 80 per cent sounds flat no matter how good the notes are.
Dynamics are the single largest difference between an intermediate and an advanced sounding handpan player, larger than speed and larger than vocabulary. The instrument’s forgiving tuning means note choice cannot let you down, so what is left to carry expression is volume, timing and silence.
Building range. Practise a simple pattern at four levels: barely audible, quiet, normal, and as loud as you can go without the tone hardening. Loop it moving level by level. Most players discover their “quiet” is not very quiet and their loud has an unusable harsh zone at the top. Both ends are trainable.
Accents within a phrase. Not all notes in a run are equal. Try accenting the first of each group of three, then the last, then a syncopated one. The notes are identical and the music is not.
Shape over time. A phrase that starts quiet, swells and falls away has a direction. A phrase at constant volume is a list. Think of an arc across four or eight bars rather than deciding note by note.
Silence. The handpan has a long decay, which means a rest is not silence, it is the previous note blooming. Leaving two beats empty after a phrase is one of the most effective things you can do on this instrument, and it is the thing beginners never do. Try ending phrases and then counting two full beats before continuing.
Timbre as dynamics. Because different parts of the hand give different tone colours (PLA-09), you can get contrast without changing volume at all. A passage played with nail tips and the same passage played with thumb pads read as two different dynamics to a listener.
A caution about recording and amplification. Compression and close microphones flatten dynamics. If you have developed a good dynamic range and your recordings sound lifeless, the problem may be the chain rather than the playing.

PLA-23How do I improvise freely without it turning to mush?#

Short answer. Improvise with a form rather than without one. Pick a pulse, a small set of notes and a length, then vary one thing at a time. Free improvisation that goes nowhere is usually improvisation with too many free variables at once.
The paradox of the handpan is that it is the easiest instrument in the world to improvise on and one of the hardest to improvise well on. Nothing sounds wrong, so nothing forces structure, and four minutes of pleasant wandering is the default output.
Things that impose structure without killing freedom:
Motif and development. Play a short idea, three to six notes. Then play it again. Then play it with one note changed. Then displaced by a beat. Then louder. Then in a different register. Listeners follow ideas that recur and evolve; they cannot follow ideas that never repeat. This is the single most useful improvisation habit and it costs nothing to adopt.
Call and response. Play a phrase, leave a gap, answer it. Even alone, this creates an implied conversation and forces you to leave space.
A repeating harmonic anchor. Return to the ding, or to a low ostinato, every four or eight bars. The return is what makes the departure meaningful.
Sections. Decide in advance that you will play a rhythmic section, then a melodic section, then a rhythmic section again. Even a loose plan gives the listener architecture.
One variable at a time. If you are exploring a new rhythm, keep the notes simple. If you are exploring melody, keep the rhythm steady. Changing everything simultaneously reads as noise.
Density discipline. Count how many notes you play in ten seconds. Halve it. Most improvisation problems are density problems.
Recording as feedback. Improvise for five minutes, record it, listen back the next day and mark the two moments that were genuinely good. Those moments are your material. Most composed handpan pieces started as an accident in an improvisation that the player was paying enough attention to notice.

PLA-24How do I actually compose a piece and remember it?#

Short answer. Capture fragments from improvisation, choose one, build sections around it deliberately, and then record and label the result. Handpan players lose more good music to bad memory than to bad taste.
Finding material. Record your practice, all of it, on a phone. Once a week, scan through and pull out the moments that made you pay attention. Most composed handpan pieces begin as a two bar accident. The skill is not inventing the fragment, it is noticing it.
Building outwards. Take one fragment and treat it as the A section. Then deliberately construct a B section that contrasts with it in at least one clear dimension: register (higher or lower), density (busier or sparser), rhythm (straight against swung, or a different grouping), or harmony (centred on a different note of the scale). Contrast is what makes an arrangement rather than a loop. Then decide an order: A, A, B, A is a perfectly good form and needs no apology.
Remembering it. This is the part people underestimate, because handpan music is mostly learned by hand rather than by notation, and hands forget. Options, in increasing order of effort:
- Record it immediately. Even a rough phone recording is enough to reconstruct from. Do this before you stand up.
- Name the sections and write a map. “Ding groove, high melody, slap break, ding groove.” Twenty words on your phone will bring back an entire piece months later.
- Write the note sequence. Number the tone fields (most players number outwards from the ding, alternating sides) and write sequences as numbers. There is no standard handpan notation, though several teachers use symbol based systems in their courses, so pick a scheme and stay consistent with yourself.
- Standard notation. Perfectly usable if you read music, and the only option that captures rhythm precisely.
Practising it as a piece. A composition you can only play when it comes out spontaneously is not yet a composition. Play it deliberately, from the top, at will. Then play it three times in a row identically. If you cannot, you do not know it yet.
Manu Delago’s teaching leans heavily on this territory (composition, arrangement and structure) rather than on drills, which is a useful signal about where the difficulty actually lies for most players.

PLA-25How do I end a piece?#
intermediate
Short answer. Decide the ending before you start. The default handpan ending is to gradually run out of ideas and trail off, which reads to a listener as an accident. Almost any deliberate ending is better.
The problem is structural. The instrument sustains, improvisation is easy, and there is no natural stopping point, so pieces tend to fade into vagueness. Meanwhile the last ten seconds are what a listener remembers.
Endings that work:
Return to the opening. Restate your first phrase, then stop. This is the oldest device in music and it works because it tells the listener the journey has closed.
Thin out deliberately. Remove layers one at a time. Drop the melody, then the ghost notes, then the backbone, leaving the pulse alone, then a single ding. Each removal should be a decision, spaced over several bars, not a gradual loss of energy.
Ritardando into a final note. Slow the pulse over the last four to eight beats and land on the root. Very effective, and easy to overuse.
The single struck ding, left to ring. Play it, take your hands off, and let it decay to nothing. Do not touch the instrument. The silence afterwards is part of the ending, and holding it for three or four seconds is what makes it land.
A damped stop. The opposite: play the final note or chord and immediately damp everything with a flat hand. Abrupt, definite, and useful when the piece has been rhythmic rather than atmospheric.
Fade by dynamics. Repeat the final figure at decreasing volume until it is inaudible. Works well in recording, less well live in a noisy room.
Two practical notes for performance. First, audiences do not know a handpan piece has ended unless you tell them, and the usual tell is your hands leaving the instrument and your posture changing. Lift your hands clearly. Second, if you are improvising live and lose your way, do not wander looking for an exit. Go to the root, play it twice, stop. It will sound intentional.
