1 - Myths debunked
Sixteen things people confidently say about handpans that are wrong, out of date, or true only in a much narrower sense than claimed.
MYT-01“It is called a hang drum”#
beginner
The myth. The instrument’s real name is the hang drum, and “handpan” is a newer or lesser word for the same thing.
Short answer. Both halves are wrong. “Hang” is a trademarked name belonging to one Swiss maker, PANArt, for one specific instrument they stopped making in 2013. They explicitly asked people not to append “drum” to it. “Handpan” is the correct generic term for the whole family.
Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer built the Hang in Bern in 2000 and presented it at the Frankfurt Musikmesse the following year. The name is Bernese German and carries a double meaning: hand, and hillside, the latter referring to the convex shape. PANArt have been consistent for two decades that “hang drum” is inaccurate, on the grounds that the instrument is not a drum in the membranophone sense and that the compound was never their name for it. They ended Hang production in December 2013 and moved to the Pang instruments.
The generic term arrived from a competitor. Kyle Cox of Pantheon Steel in the United States used “hand pan” on his company’s website between June and September 2007 to describe the instrument he was developing, which became the Halo. The word spread through the Hang-Music Forum from September 2007 and was locked in when handpan.org launched on 11 August 2009. Within a few years it was the standard English term.
Why the myth is so persistent. Search engines. “Hang drum” is what a huge number of people type, so shops, blogs and YouTube titles use it deliberately for traffic, including shops that know better. That feedback loop keeps the wrong term at the top of every search result, which teaches the next wave of beginners the wrong term. In Israel and among Hebrew-speaking makers the standard term is “pantam”, which is a regional naming convention for the same instrument, not a third category.
What to do about it. Say handpan. If someone says hang drum, they are almost certainly not being obtuse, they just learned it from a search result. And if someone is using a genuine PANArt Hang, then Hang is exactly the right word, without the “drum”.

MYT-02“There are only a few makers and you will wait years”#
beginner
The myth. Handpans are made by a handful of secretive workshops, waiting lists run to several years, and you have to enter a lottery to buy one.
Short answer. That was accurate around 2008 to 2014. It is out of date now. Public directories list roughly a hundred active makers worldwide, and delivery times range from under two weeks to over a year depending on the maker.
The lottery era was real and left a deep mark on the culture. PANArt received far more orders than they could fill, moved to a letter-writing application system, and eventually to requiring buyers to travel to Bern. Second-hand Hangs traded at multiples of their original price. In that period there genuinely were only a small number of alternative builders, and their queues stretched into years.
What changed was knowledge and supply. Shell forming, nitriding and tuning technique diffused through forums, festivals, workshops and, eventually, makers selling blank deep-drawn shells to other makers. New workshops opened across Europe, North America, Israel, Australia, Indonesia, Brazil and elsewhere. The Master The Handpan maker directory now lists on the order of a hundred builders across a long list of countries, with stated delivery times spanning less than fifteen days at one end and more than a year at the other. Typical prices cluster in the region of 1,000 to 3,000 euros, with the most common bracket somewhere around 1,200 to 1,800.
What is still true. Individually famous makers do still have long queues, and a specific scale from a specific builder may take a year. Custom work takes longer than stock. And the second-hand market for sought-after instruments still runs hot.
What is no longer true. That you cannot simply buy a good handpan in stock, this month, from a reputable workshop or dealer. You can, in most common scales, at most price points. If someone tells you otherwise, they are describing the market of a decade ago, or they are a reseller with an interest in scarcity.

MYT-03“You cannot play real music on one, only ambient noodling”#

The myth. The handpan is limited to a single scale, has no dynamics and no harmony, so nothing structured can be written for it. What you hear is people improvising pleasantly over nothing.
Short answer. The constraint is real and the conclusion is wrong. A fixed scale of eight or nine notes is a serious limitation, and musicians have been making highly structured music inside comparable limitations for centuries.
Take the criticism seriously first, because it has a point. Most handpans give you a single mode with no accidentals, so you cannot modulate, you have limited harmonic movement, and the layout does not favour large leaps. A great deal of what circulates online is genuinely unstructured: a loop, a slow build, no development, no ending. That the internet is full of it is not evidence about the instrument’s ceiling.
What the instrument actually supports:
Rhythm. The strongest musical resource a handpan has is not melody, it is the interaction of pitched notes with the shoulder, rim and Gu, which turns a melodic instrument into a hand drum with tuned voices. Composed rhythmic handpan playing is closer to tabla or cajon writing than to ambient.
Counterpoint within a scale. Independent bass ostinato under a moving melody line is standard practice among competent players, and it is where the instrument stops sounding like wallpaper.
Ensemble writing. In a band the handpan does not need to supply the harmony, which removes the main limitation at a stroke. Handpans appear in jazz, in folk, in film scoring, in electronic production and in contemporary classical contexts, generally as a colour with a defined role.
Multiple instruments. Players routinely work with two or three handpans in different scales, which restores modulation.
A fair way to state the truth. A handpan is a limited-set instrument, like a diatonic harmonica, a pentatonic kalimba, or a set of tuned handbells. Limited-set instruments produce a lot of noodling and a smaller amount of excellent, disciplined music. The instrument is not the variable there.

The myth. The instrument requires reverence, particular clothing, a cleared mind, an intention set beforehand, or bare feet on the earth in order to sound right or to work as it should.
Short answer. Nothing about the acoustics of a steel shell responds to your footwear or your mood. What is true is much simpler: relaxed hands play better than tense hands, and rituals that help you relax will therefore help you play.
There is a real observation buried in the folklore. Handpan tone is exceptionally sensitive to touch. A tense forearm, a locked wrist or a strike that stays in contact with the tone field for a few extra milliseconds all audibly dull the note. Players who arrive stressed and grip the instrument do sound worse than players who arrive calm. Anyone who plays regularly notices this, and it is easy to explain it in the language of energy rather than the language of biomechanics.
Where the folklore does damage is in gatekeeping. A beginner told that they need the right state of mind before touching the instrument has been handed a reason to feel they are doing it wrong, on top of the ordinary difficulty of learning. It also colours the culture in a way that puts off musicians who would otherwise be interested, and it creates a market for people selling ceremony rather than teaching.
What actually improves your sound. Warm hands. Loose shoulders. A sitting position where the instrument is stable and your forearms are not supporting its weight. Short, rebounding strikes with the finger pads or the fleshy part just below them. Cutting your nails. Practising slowly enough that you are not recovering from mistakes. None of this is mystical and all of it is teachable.
On barefoot playing specifically. Many players do sit barefoot because they play cross legged on the floor and it is comfortable. That is a seating preference. It has no effect on the instrument.
A note on respecting what is real. Plenty of people find playing genuinely calming and meaningful, and that is not nonsense. The distinction worth holding is between “this practice calms me, which makes me play better” (true and useful) and “the instrument requires a spiritual state to function” (not true, and unhelpful to say to a beginner).

MYT-05“432 Hz is the natural frequency of the universe”#

The myth. Tuning A to 432 Hz rather than 440 Hz aligns the instrument with a natural or cosmic frequency, matches the Earth’s Schumann resonance, produces better cymatic patterns, and was the pitch Verdi and the ancients used before it was changed, in some tellings by Nazi propaganda.
Short answer. Every specific factual claim in that list is either false or unsupported. Concert pitch is a human convention that has moved constantly through history, and there is no measurement showing that 432 Hz has special physical or physiological properties.
Point by point.
“It is the universe’s natural frequency.” Frequency is not an absolute property of anything. 432 Hz means 432 cycles per second, and the second is a human unit defined by a caesium atom transition. Change the definition of the second and the number changes. A claim that a number tied to an arbitrary unit is cosmically privileged is not a physics claim.
“It matches the Schumann resonance.” The Schumann resonance fundamental is about 7.83 Hz. Getting from 7.83 to 432 requires a chain of multiplications chosen after the fact. The same arithmetic can reach almost any number you like.
“Cymatics prove it.” Cymatic patterns depend on plate geometry, material, amplitude and mounting far more than on the specific driving frequency. Comparisons circulated online almost never control for these.
“Verdi used it.” Verdi campaigned for a lower standard pitch, and the Italian government adopted A=432 in 1884 following his lobbying. But Verdi’s own preference is usually reported as A=435, and he accepted 432 as a compromise. He was arguing about singers’ voices, not about cosmology.
“440 was imposed by the Nazis.” The move towards A=440 was under discussion internationally through the 1920s and 1930s, was adopted at a conference in 1939, and was reaffirmed as ISO 16 in 1955. It is a standards story about orchestras and instrument makers needing to agree, not a propaganda story.
What is actually true. Historical pitch varied enormously, from roughly A=390 to A=465 depending on place and period, and baroque ensembles routinely play at A=415 today. Nothing stops a handpan being tuned to A=432, plenty of makers offer it, and if you prefer how it sounds that is a perfectly good reason. The eight hertz difference is about 32 cents, roughly a third of a semitone, and it is audible.
The practical cost. A 432 Hz instrument will clash with any 440 Hz instrument you try to play with. That is the real trade-off, and it deserves more attention than the cosmology.

MYT-06“Handpans are ancient, a traditional tribal instrument”#

The myth. The handpan is an ancient instrument, variously described as tribal, shamanic, or thousands of years old, sometimes with a specific culture attached.
Short answer. The handpan was invented in the year 2000. It is younger than the DVD. The steelpan it descends from dates to the 1930s and 1940s. Nothing about it is ancient.
The timeline is unusually well documented for a musical instrument, which is what makes the myth so odd. Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer built the first Hang in Bern in 2000 and showed it publicly in 2001. The material and forming methods came from their own steelpan work in the 1990s. The steelpan itself grew out of Trinidadian carnival percussion in the 1930s and 1940s, with Ellie Mannette (1927 to 2018) credited for the 55 gallon oil drum and the sunken concave head. Every element of the chain sits inside living memory.
Where the confusion comes from. Three sources, mostly.
First, the instrument’s shape and sound have no obvious modern reference point, so listeners reach for “ancient” as a category for anything that does not sound like a guitar or a piano. Second, marketing. A great deal of merchandise, playlist artwork and sound-healing promotion attaches vaguely ancient framing to handpans because it sells. Third, genuine confusion with older vessel instruments: the udu from the Igbo people of Nigeria and the ghatam from South India are old, are struck clay pots, and do use the enclosed air of the vessel as part of the sound. But the resemblance is a shared piece of physics, the Helmholtz resonator, that many traditions found independently. It is not a chain of transmission, and no handpan technique, tuning method or repertoire descends from either.
Why it matters. Beyond simple accuracy, the “ancient tribal instrument” framing borrows unearned authority from cultures that had nothing to do with it, while erasing the actual credit: two Swiss steelpan builders, and behind them a Trinidadian invention with a hard political history. Both of those stories are more interesting than the invented one.

MYT-07“The more notes, the better the instrument”#
beginner
The myth. A seventeen note handpan with bottom notes and top-shell extras is a better instrument than a nine note one, and paying more for more notes is straightforwardly an upgrade.
Short answer. Adding notes trades away tone, tuning stability, ergonomics and playability. More notes is a different instrument for a different purpose, not a better one.
Every extra tone field competes for space on a shell of fixed diameter. That has concrete consequences.
Tone field size. Squeezing more notes onto the top shell means smaller fields, which generally means less volume, less sustain and a thinner, more clipped voice. Makers manage this with layout and hammering skill, but the physics does not go away.
Crosstalk. Notes that are physically close and harmonically related excite each other. On a well spaced instrument that sympathetic ringing is part of the charm. On a crowded one it turns into mud, and it becomes difficult to play cleanly because notes you did not strike keep sounding.
Tuning stability. More fields in a stressed shell means more interacting tension. Densely noted instruments are generally more prone to drifting and harder to retune, because adjusting one field disturbs its neighbours.
Bottom notes. Notes on the lower shell are a real feature and a real compromise. They add range, and they mean the instrument has to be lifted or angled to reach them, they usually sound quieter and less defined than top notes, and they can interfere with the Gu port’s behaviour.
Playability. Nine notes in a comfortable circle can be learned by feel in a few weeks. Seventeen scattered notes cannot, and beginners on large instruments frequently end up using the same eight.
What actually makes an instrument good. Clean tuning of the fundamental, octave and compound fifth on every field. Even volume across the range. Adequate sustain without smearing. A shell that holds its tuning. A scale you enjoy. All of these are independent of note count, and all of them are more audible than the extra notes.
A reasonable rule. Buy your first handpan with eight or nine notes. Add a second instrument in a different scale before you add notes to the same one. Consider a large-note-count instrument once you can already say precisely which extra notes you need and why.

MYT-08“Expensive automatically means better”#
intermediate
The myth. Price tracks quality closely enough that spending more is a reliable substitute for knowing how to evaluate an instrument.
Short answer. Price correlates with quality at the bottom of the market and stops correlating usefully above roughly the mid range. Beyond that you are largely paying for reputation, waiting list length, material choice and finish, none of which guarantees the instrument suits you.
At the low end the correlation is real and worth respecting. Below a few hundred euros you are almost always looking at a poorly tuned instrument, a rebadged tongue drum, or a copy. Spending enough to reach an established workshop genuinely does buy better tuning, better stability and after-sales support.
Above that the picture breaks up, for several reasons.
Scarcity is priced in. A maker with a two year queue and a strong social media presence can charge more than an equally skilled maker who is unknown. That premium is real market value, but it is not tone.
Material is a preference, not a ranking. Stainless steel instruments generally cost more than nitrided steel, and they sound different: longer sustain, a warmer and more floating decay, better corrosion resistance and often more predictable tuning behaviour. Nitrided steel gives a shorter, crisper, more percussive and more clearly articulated note that many players actively prefer, especially for rhythmic playing. Paying more for stainless is buying a character, not an upgrade.
Finish and cosmetics cost money. Etching, plating, coloured oxide finishes and elaborate cases add price without adding sound.
Fit matters more than tier. A 2,800 euro instrument in a scale you never reach for is worse for you than an 1,100 euro instrument in the scale you actually play. This is the single most common expensive mistake in handpan buying.
How to evaluate instead. Listen to each note alone, then in pairs, for a tuned octave and fifth above the fundamental. Listen for even volume around the circle. Play a fast passage and check the notes stay distinct. Check the sustain suits your style rather than simply being long. Ask the maker how they handle retuning and what the turnaround is. Wherever possible, play the instrument or at least hear an unedited recording of that specific shell.

MYT-09“You cannot learn without a teacher”#
beginner
The myth. The handpan requires a teacher, and self-taught players will develop bad habits they can never correct.
Short answer. The handpan is one of the easiest instruments in the world to start alone, because every note is in key and there is no wrong note to play. A teacher accelerates things considerably once you want more than that, but the entry barrier is genuinely low.
Why self-teaching works here. There is no fingering system to get wrong, no intonation to produce yourself, no embouchure, and the layout is a small circle you can learn by feel. On day one, striking notes at random produces something musical. That is a real and unusual advantage, and it is why so many players are self-taught.
Where self-teaching stalls, usually around month three to six:
Touch. Beginners hit too hard, stay in contact with the tone field too long, and use the wrong part of the hand. This dulls the tone, tires the hands and risks detuning the instrument. It is easy to fix and hard to notice in yourself.
Rhythm. Untaught players tend to converge on the same rolling, tempo-free pattern and stay there. Working with a metronome, or with a teacher, breaks this quickly.
Both hands independently. Getting a bass ostinato under a melody is the main technical hurdle, and it is much faster with someone watching.
Repetition injuries. Wrist and shoulder problems come from tension and from long unbroken sessions. A teacher spots the posture that causes them.
What is available now that was not. Structured online courses, video lessons, tab and notation systems, remote one-to-one lessons over video call, and handpan festivals and workshops in most European countries and much of North America. You do not need a local teacher to get taught.
A sensible plan. Play alone for the first month and enjoy it. Then film yourself, or take three or four lessons, specifically to check touch, posture and timing. That small intervention buys most of the benefit of a teacher. Continuing lessons after that is worthwhile if you want repertoire and technique, and optional if you want to sit and play in the evenings.

MYT-10“Handpans always go out of tune quickly”#
intermediate
The myth. Handpans are fragile instruments that detune within months of normal use and need constant expensive retuning.
Short answer. A well built and properly settled handpan, played sensibly, commonly goes several years without needing attention, and some never need a retune at all. Fast detuning is a symptom of a rushed build, an accident or heavy-handed playing, not the normal condition of the instrument.
There is a real vulnerability underneath the myth. Every tone field is a stressed dimple in a continuous shell, so unlike a tongue drum’s mechanically isolated tongue, a handpan note is held in place by the tension of the metal around it. Deform that, and the pitch moves. That is why handpans are the more delicate of the two.
What actually causes detuning:
- Impact. Drops, dents, something heavy landing on the shell, or somebody sitting on it. This is the biggest single cause and it is usually instant and obvious.
- Playing too hard. Sustained heavy striking, and particularly using hard sticks or mallets on an instrument not built for them, gradually reshapes tone fields.
- Temperature extremes. Repeated heating and cooling stresses the steel. A car boot in summer is a genuinely bad place for a handpan.
- An incomplete build. This is the underrated one. Good makers settle the steel through repeated fine-tuning passes before shipping. Instruments tuned in a hurry keep settling after delivery, which the owner then experiences as the instrument going out of tune.
What does not cause it. Normal playing with the hands. Passing it round at a party. Playing every day. Playing loudly within reason.
Practical expectations. New instruments may shift slightly in the first few months as they settle; ask your maker what they expect. After that, judge by ear rather than by calendar. Signs that a retune is due are a note that sounds sour against its neighbours, a note whose octave has drifted so the tone sounds hollow or wolfy, or a sudden change after an incident. Retuning is done by the maker or a specialist tuner and typically costs a fraction of the instrument’s price plus shipping, which is the main expense.

MYT-11“You should never let anyone else play yours”#
beginner
The myth. Letting other people touch your handpan will detune it, damage the surface, or otherwise degrade the instrument, so a responsible owner keeps it to themselves.
Short answer. A curious adult tapping your handpan with their fingers will not hurt it. What causes damage is a specific and short list of behaviours, all of which you can prevent with one sentence of instruction rather than a blanket refusal.
The underlying worry is not baseless. Handpan notes are stressed steel, and there is a real category of person who, handed an unfamiliar instrument, will hit it as hard as they can to see what happens. But the risk comes from force and from hard objects, not from other hands per se.
The things that actually cause harm:
- Striking with the full force of the arm rather than the hand.
- Rings, watches, long fingernails, or any hard object.
- Sticks, mallets or pens on an instrument not designed for them.
- Picking it up badly, or putting it down on a hard edge.
- Sweaty or greasy hands left on nitrided steel and not wiped afterwards. This is a corrosion issue, not a tuning one, and a cloth solves it.
What to say instead of no. “Yes, of course. Take your rings off, and use your fingertips lightly. It responds better to a light touch than a hard one anyway.” That single instruction removes nearly all the risk, and it is also true, which is why it works: people play more gently once they discover the instrument sounds better that way.
The cultural argument for sharing. The handpan grew as a community instrument, passed around in circles, at festivals and in parks. Almost every current player first touched one because a stranger let them. Refusing on principle preserves a slightly nicer surface finish at the cost of the thing that keeps the community alive.
When to say no. Small children with no supervision, anyone visibly drunk, anyone who has already ignored one instruction, and any situation where the instrument would be out of your sight. Those are judgement calls about people, not a rule about the instrument.

MYT-12“Stainless steel handpans never rust”#

The myth. Stainless steel instruments are maintenance free and cannot corrode, so you can leave them anywhere and skip the oiling that nitrided instruments need.
Short answer. Stainless is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. The chromium oxide layer that protects it is thin, self-healing under normal conditions, and defeatable by salt, chlorides, prolonged moisture and contact with ordinary carbon steel. Stainless handpans do develop rust spots, just far less readily.
How the protection works. Stainless alloys contain enough chromium to form a passive chromium oxide film on the surface. Scratch it and, given oxygen, it reforms. That is why a stainless instrument survives a humid room, a sweaty gig or an afternoon outdoors far better than a nitrided one, and why the maintenance routine is genuinely lighter: wipe it down after playing, and oil or wax occasionally at most.
Where it fails:
Chlorides. Salt is the classic attacker. Sea air, salt spray, and prolonged skin salt left on the surface can cause pitting corrosion, which is localised, deep and much uglier than general surface rust. Coastal players should be more diligent, not less.
Trapped moisture and no oxygen. The passive layer needs oxygen to reform. A wet instrument sealed in a bag is the worst case, and this is where most stainless rust spots actually come from.
Contamination. Iron particles transferred from carbon steel tools, a workbench or a rusty surface embed in the finish and rust in place, producing spots that look like the stainless itself has failed. Cleaning removes them.
Scratches and heat. Deep scratches and localised heating can compromise the passive layer.
By contrast, nitrided carbon steel handpans are protected by a hard nitrided surface layer that offers good but not excellent resistance and is genuinely vulnerable to sweat, salt and humid or coastal air. Those instruments do need regular wiping and periodic oiling or waxing, and neglect shows quickly.
The practical rule for either material. Wipe after every session with a dry cloth. Never bag or case a damp instrument. Do not store it against a cold wall or in an unheated garage where condensation forms. Deal with a rust spot when it is a spot.

MYT-13“Handpans can only be played with the fingertips”#
beginner
The myth. Correct handpan technique means fingertips only. Palms, thumbs, knuckles and any kind of stick are wrong and will damage the instrument.
Short answer. Fingertips are the default because they give the cleanest note and the least risk, not because they are the only legitimate contact. Skilled players use most of the hand, deliberately and in different places, and a handful of makers build instruments specifically for mallets.
The full vocabulary in ordinary use:
Finger pads and the area just below them. The standard melodic strike. Short contact, immediate rebound, maximum tone with minimum force.
Thumbs. Used for bass notes and for the Ding, where more mass gives a fuller fundamental.
Whole hand or flat fingers on the tone field. A softer, rounder, quieter attack with more fundamental and fewer high partials. Useful for accompaniment under a melody.
Heel or side of the hand near the rim and on the shoulder. Produces unpitched percussive sounds. This is where the handpan stops being a melodic instrument and starts being a hand drum, and it is the most underused resource on the instrument.
Knuckles and nails. Sharper, brighter, more clicking. Used sparingly for accents. Higher risk of marking the surface, so keep nails short.
The Gu port. Slapping or covering and releasing the bottom port changes the air cavity’s response and produces a bass note. Rim and port work together are how a solo player gets a groove.
Damping. Resting a finger, a knuckle or the heel of the hand on a field to shorten a note is technique in itself, and it is what separates legible fast playing from a wash.
On mallets. The blanket warning against sticks exists because a hard stick concentrates force on a small area and can deform a tone field. That risk is real. But soft mallets used with control are fine on many instruments, and some makers explicitly build thicker instruments for mallet use. Ask your maker rather than assuming either way.
What genuinely damages the instrument. Force, hard objects and rings. Not the particular part of the hand.

MYT-14“Handpan music is all improvised and cannot be written down”#
intermediate
The myth. The instrument has no notation, its music exists only in the moment, and writing it down would miss the point or is simply not possible.
Short answer. Handpan music can be written in standard notation like any other pitched instrument, and the community has also developed several purpose-built tablature systems. The absence of a single dominant standard is a young-instrument problem, not an impossibility.
Standard notation works fine. A handpan plays specific, fixed pitches. Any handpan piece can be written on a stave, and composers writing for handpan in ensemble contexts do exactly that. The awkward parts are the same awkward parts as for any hand percussion: notating which hand plays what, notating unpitched rim and shell sounds, and notating damping. Percussion notation has established conventions for all three.
Handpan-specific tablature. Because the notes are arranged in a circle rather than in a line, several systems represent the instrument as a diagram of its layout with the tone fields numbered or shaded in playing order. Digital tools exist for producing these. Their strength is that a beginner can follow one immediately without reading music. Their standard weakness is rhythm: most simple tab shows the order of notes but not their duration or timing, so it functions as a memory aid rather than a complete score. Systems that add a time grid or rhythmic notation on top address this.
Why no single standard has won. The instrument is barely twenty-five years old, scales differ between instruments so a diagram is not portable, the community formed online rather than through conservatoires, and most players learn by ear and video. Video is, in practice, the dominant transmission medium, which reduces the pressure to standardise.
Why it is worth writing things down anyway. Improvised playing has a strong tendency to converge on the same handful of patterns. Committing a phrase to paper forces decisions about structure, length and ending that improvisation lets you avoid, and players who do it generally develop faster.

MYT-15“The instrument was invented in India / Africa / the Caribbean”#

The myth. The handpan comes from India, or from Africa, or is a Caribbean steel drum, depending on who is telling it.
Short answer. It was invented in Bern, Switzerland, in 2000, by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of PANArt. The Caribbean claim is the only one with a genuine connection, and it is a claim about the handpan’s ancestor rather than about the handpan.
The Caribbean version. This is half right and worth stating precisely. The steelpan was developed in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s and 1940s, with Ellie Mannette credited for the 55 gallon oil drum and the sunken concave playing surface. Rohner and Schärer were steelpan builders who spent the 1990s developing their own sheet steel for pan making, and the Hang applies steelpan note-making to a closed vessel played with the hands. So the technique is Trinidadian in origin; the instrument is Swiss. Calling a handpan a “steel drum” collapses that distinction and annoys steelpan players, reasonably.
The Indian version. Usually traces to the ghatam, the clay pot of Carnatic percussion, or simply to the instrument turning up in yoga studios. The ghatam is genuinely ancient and genuinely a struck vessel, but nothing in handpan construction, tuning or technique comes from it.
The African version. Usually traces to the udu of the Igbo people of Nigeria, another clay vessel drum, which does use a side hole to excite the Helmholtz resonance of the pot. Again a shared piece of physics, not a shared lineage. The relevant African contribution to this story is actually the Trinidadian one, since the steelband movement grew out of Afro-Caribbean carnival traditions with roots in West African drumming.
Why the myths spread. The instrument’s sound has no obvious western reference point; it circulates in contexts that market themselves with global-spiritual imagery; and its actual origin, two Swiss people in a workshop in Bern in 2000, is less romantic than the alternatives. It is also, as origin stories go, extremely well documented, which is what makes the invented versions unnecessary.

MYT-16“A handpan will cure your anxiety”#

The myth. Playing or listening to a handpan treats anxiety, and specific tunings or frequencies have measurable therapeutic effects.
Short answer. There is decent evidence that music therapy helps with anxiety, at roughly a medium effect size, and none at all that a handpan specifically does anything a guitar or a piano would not. Playing may well make you feel better. It is not a treatment, and it should not replace one.
What the evidence actually shows. A 2025 systematic review with multilevel meta-analysis in eClinicalMedicine pooled 51 studies of music therapy for anxiety and found a statistically significant medium effect (g = 0.357 overall, g = 0.410 for self-reported anxiety). That is a real result and a respectable one. But the same review found the effect on physiological measures small and not statistically significant (g = 0.153), rated study quality as strong in only about a quarter of studies and weak in nearly 40 per cent, noted that most studies lacked masking, which tends to inflate effects against passive controls, and reported that the mechanism and the optimal dose remain unknown.
Read that honestly and it says: music therapy, delivered by a trained therapist, plausibly helps a fair number of people with anxiety, by a mechanism nobody has pinned down, and the subjective benefit is much better evidenced than any bodily one.
What it does not say. It says nothing about handpans specifically. It says nothing about particular frequencies, scales or tunings having distinct effects. It does not support the claim that any instrument treats an anxiety disorder, and it does not license anyone without clinical training to describe what they are offering as therapy.
What is genuinely plausible for a handpan player. Regular practice of a rewarding physical skill, focused attention that interrupts rumination, slowed breathing that tends to accompany slow playing, and social contact through the handpan community are all things that reasonably support wellbeing. Many players report exactly this and there is no reason to doubt them.
Where the line is. “This instrument reliably calms me down and I look forward to playing it” is honest and probably true. “This instrument cures anxiety” is a medical claim without evidence, and in some jurisdictions selling on that basis is also a regulatory problem. If you have an anxiety disorder, see a clinician. Then, by all means, also play.
