1 - Hands, soreness and injury
Sore fingertips, calluses, tendon strain, warm ups that earn their place, and playing with arthritis, small hands or an existing injury.
BOD-01Does playing the handpan hurt your hands, and should it?#
beginner
Short answer. Mild fingertip tenderness in the first weeks is normal and settles. Anything sharper than that, anything in the wrist, forearm or thumb base, and anything that lingers after you stop playing is a technique problem or a volume problem, not a rite of passage.
The handpan is unusual among percussion instruments in that the thing you strike is thin, springy steel that gives back almost all of the energy you put in. Played correctly, the hand is barely doing work. The stroke is a drop and a rebound: the finger falls, the steel returns it, and the hand leaves. Contact time is a few milliseconds. Under those conditions the instrument is one of the gentlest percussion instruments on the body, far kinder than a djembe, a cajón or a drum kit.
The trouble is that the handpan is also extremely forgiving of bad technique. Press into the steel instead of bouncing off it and you still get a note, just a duller one. Grip your fingers rigid and you still get a note. Play twice as hard as needed and you get a louder note that most listeners will accept. So the instrument does not correct you the way a violin or a trumpet does, and players can accumulate months of unnecessary impact before anything complains.
That is where pain comes from. Almost always one of four things: striking with locked, straight fingers so the impact travels up the finger instead of being absorbed by the joints; hitting far harder than the instrument needs; hunching or reaching so the shoulder and forearm are working to hold position; or simply playing for two hours on day three when your tissues have had no time to adapt.
The useful distinction is between soreness and pain. Soreness is diffuse, sits in the pads of the fingertips, appears during or shortly after playing, and is gone the next morning. Pain is sharp or specific, points to a joint or a tendon, and outlasts the session. Soreness you can play through in moderation. Pain means stop, and see BOD-06.
Nothing about the instrument requires you to hurt. If it hurts consistently, something is wrong and it is fixable.

BOD-02Why are my fingertips sore, and does it get better?#
beginner
Short answer. Because you are repeatedly striking hardened steel with soft tissue that has never done this before, and yes, it settles within a few weeks for almost everyone. If it is not settling after a month, look at how hard you are playing.
The soreness is straightforward tissue response. The fingertip pad is fat, connective tissue and nerve endings under skin, and it is not accustomed to hundreds of small impacts an hour. In the first sessions you will feel a warm, slightly bruised sensation across the pads, sometimes worst on the index and middle fingers of your dominant hand because that is where beginners concentrate their strokes.
A few things change over the first month or two. The skin thickens slightly. The tissue adapts. More importantly, your technique improves without you noticing: you stop over hitting, your strokes get more efficient, and the ratio of sound to impact goes up. Most players report the tenderness effectively disappearing somewhere between two and six weeks of regular playing. It comes back briefly after a long layoff, and after unusually long sessions, and that is normal.
Things that make it worse and are worth checking. Cold hands are the biggest one: cold tissue is stiffer, less elastic and bruises more easily, so a genuinely cold room is a bad place to start playing hard. Striking with the fingertip bone rather than the pad concentrates force on a tiny area; the flat of the last finger joint, or the pad slightly off centre, spreads it. Straight, locked fingers transmit impact into the joint instead of letting the soft tissue absorb it. Long nails change the contact point and can also chip and click on the steel.
There is one situation where soreness is not just adaptation: if it localises into a specific finger joint rather than the pad, or if a joint swells, that is a different problem and worth taking seriously.
The general rule is the one from any physical training. Increase gradually. If you have a new instrument and the temptation is to play three hours a day, split it into shorter sessions with real breaks, and expect the first fortnight to feel like the hands are catching up. They are.

BOD-03Do I get calluses from playing the handpan?#
beginner
Short answer. Not really, not in the way guitarists do. Handpan players usually develop a slight general thickening of the fingertip skin rather than distinct hard pads, and if you are building thick calluses it usually means you are hitting too hard.
The difference is in the mechanics. A guitarist presses a thin steel string into the fingertip and holds it there under sustained pressure, which is exactly the recipe for localised hyperkeratosis: the skin thickens where it is repeatedly compressed. A handpan player makes brief, broad, low pressure contact with a large smooth surface and leaves immediately. The stimulus for callus formation is much weaker.
What most players actually get is a subtle change in skin texture across the pads and the side of the index finger, and a mild loss of sensitivity that they only notice when they stop playing for a few weeks and it returns. Some players who use a lot of slap and rim work develop a firmer patch on the side of the thumb or the outer edge of the hand, which is closer to a genuine callus.
If you are developing hard, thick, visible calluses, treat that as diagnostic rather than as a badge of progress. It suggests either very high impact playing, striking with a very small contact area, or a lot of friction technique. Friction and rubbing strokes across the steel do produce more skin change than ordinary striking, so players who use them heavily are the exception here.
Practical care, such as it is. Do not deliberately try to build calluses; there is nothing to gain, and thick dry skin actually reduces the tonal control that fine tip contact gives you. If skin does get dry and starts to split, ordinary hand cream after playing rather than before is right, since moisturised fingers before a session make the tip slip and dull the attack. Keep nails short enough that they do not contact the steel. If a callus catches or tears, file it flat rather than picking it, and give it a day.
One more thing worth saying: because the handpan needs so little force, sensitivity in the fingertips is an asset. Anything that permanently deadens them is working against your playing.

BOD-04How do I avoid RSI, tendonitis and wrist strain?#
intermediate
Short answer. Play quieter than feels natural, let the wrist and fingers stay loose, keep the forearm roughly neutral rather than sharply bent, take real breaks, and increase your playing time gradually. Almost all handpan strain comes from force, from held tension, or from doing too much too soon.
Playing related musculoskeletal disorders are common across all instrument families, and percussionists are not exempt. The Percussive Arts Society names the usual culprits directly: loud dynamics, high speed, tight grip tension, long sessions without adequate rest, and abrupt increases in practice load. The two conditions it flags most for percussionists are lateral and medial epicondylitis (tennis and golfer’s elbow, from repetitive gripping and forearm rotation) and carpal tunnel syndrome, which shows up as pain, aching, numbness and tingling in the hand with reduced grip strength.
Translated to the handpan, the specific things to watch:
Force. The single biggest factor. The instrument reaches its useful dynamic ceiling well before your hand reaches its force ceiling, and past that point you are adding strain, not volume. If you want to sound louder, work on stroke quality, positioning relative to the audience, or amplification, not on hitting harder.
Grip tension. Watch for fingers held rigidly extended or curled between strokes. The hand should be soft and loose between contacts. Tension held continuously through a 40 minute session is far more damaging than the strikes themselves.
Wrist angle. The wrist should stay close to neutral. Sharp extension (knuckles pulled back) or sharp flexion narrows the carpal tunnel and loads the tendon sheaths. If your setup forces a bent wrist to reach the far notes, the setup is wrong, not your wrist. See BOD-09.
Reach. Twisting or leaning to reach across the instrument puts the shoulder and forearm into sustained isometric work. Move the instrument, not your spine.
Load progression. A new handpan produces a very predictable injury pattern: someone who has never played percussion goes from zero to two hours a day inside a week because they are enchanted. Tendons adapt more slowly than enthusiasm. Build up over weeks.
Breaks. Five minutes of hands off, shake out, per 25 to 30 minutes of playing. Not scrolling on a phone, which is its own hand load.
Thumbs. Players who use a lot of thumb strikes or slaps should watch the base of the thumb specifically; it is a frequent site of trouble and easy to ignore until it is not.
None of this is exotic. It is the same advice given to every instrumentalist, and it works.

BOD-05What warm ups and stretches are actually worth doing?#
intermediate
Short answer. A few minutes of gentle movement to raise tissue temperature, then very quiet playing that gradually gets louder. Static stretching held before playing is the part most commonly recommended and least well supported; save any real stretching for after.
Here is the honest position on the evidence. There is good general support for warming up before physical activity, in the plain sense of getting blood into the tissue and moving the joints through their range before loading them. Professional bodies including the Percussive Arts Society recommend daily warm ups and cool downs as part of injury prevention. What is much weaker is the specific claim that pre performance static stretching prevents injury; the sports medicine literature has been unenthusiastic about that for two decades. So the sensible structure is movement first, playing second, stretching last if at all.
A warm up that earns its place, in about five minutes:
- Get warm literally. If your hands are cold, warm them. Run them under warm water, sit on them, do anything. Cold tissue is stiff tissue. This matters more than any exercise on this list.
- Shake and circle. Loose shaking of the hands and forearms for 20 seconds. Slow wrist circles both directions. Slow shoulder rolls back. Open and close the fists gently a dozen times.
- Quietest possible playing. Two or three minutes of playing so softly that the notes barely speak. This is the real warm up. It heats the tissue through the exact movement pattern you are about to use, and it happens to be excellent technique practice, because playing at the threshold of audibility forces a clean bounce.
- Build volume gradually. Come up to your normal dynamic over another minute or two rather than starting there.
Afterwards, and only afterwards, gentle stretches are reasonable if they feel good: forearm flexors (arm out, palm up, fingers drawn gently back), forearm extensors (palm down, fingers drawn gently down), and a slow open and close of the hand. Hold anything easy, nowhere near painful, and do not bounce.
Two things not to do. Do not aggressively stretch fingers backwards to “loosen” them; the small joints of the hand do not need it and can be irritated by it. And do not treat a warm up as a substitute for playing quietly during the session itself, which is where most of the protection actually comes from.
Going deeper. Some players find general grip and forearm conditioning helpful, and the PAS does list strength work among its prevention recommendations. If you go that way, keep it well away from your playing sessions and treat it as general robustness rather than handpan specific training.

BOD-06What should I do if the pain does not go away?#
intermediate
Short answer. Stop playing, do not try to push through it, and if it persists for more than a week or two of rest, or involves numbness, tingling, weakness or swelling, see a clinician. Ideally one who has treated musicians.
The most common mistake musicians make with overuse pain is negotiating with it. They reduce practice slightly, change one thing, and keep going, because stopping feels like losing ground. Overuse injuries respond very badly to this. The tissue needs a genuine break from the aggravating load, and partial rest often extends the problem for months.
A reasonable sequence:
Stop the aggravating activity properly. Not “play more gently”, at least at first. Actually stop for a few days and see what happens. If the pain resolves quickly and completely with rest, that is informative and reassuring.
Look for the cause before you resume. Almost always it is one of the things in BOD-04: too much force, held tension, a bad wrist angle, a sudden increase in playing time, or reaching. Film yourself playing. Players are usually wrong about what their hands are doing, and video settles it faster than any amount of introspection.
Return gradually. Come back at a fraction of your previous volume and duration and build over weeks, at whatever intensity stays pain free. If pain returns at the same point, that is your answer about load.
Escalate if any of these apply. Numbness or pins and needles in the fingers, particularly if it wakes you at night. Weakness or dropping things. Visible swelling. A joint that is hot. Pain that does not change with rest. Pain that has lasted more than a couple of weeks. Any of these deserve a professional opinion rather than another month of internet advice.
Who to see. A GP is the usual first door, but a physiotherapist or hand therapist with experience of musicians is often more useful, because they will look at your playing rather than only your symptoms. In some countries there are dedicated performing arts medicine clinics. If you can get to one, do.
What to avoid: anti inflammatories used as a way to keep playing through pain, which masks the signal that is protecting you, and any “cure” that promises to fix an overuse injury without changing the load that caused it.
The good news is that the great majority of handpan related complaints are early stage, load related and reversible. Caught in the first weeks, they usually resolve completely. Ignored for a year, they are a much harder problem.

BOD-07Can I play with arthritis, small hands or an existing hand injury?#

Short answer. Very often yes, and the handpan is one of the more accessible instruments for exactly these situations, because it needs almost no force, no grip, no fine finger independence and no stretching between notes. But it depends on the specific condition, and this is a question for your clinician, not for a knowledge base.
Take the three cases separately.
Arthritis. Many players with osteoarthritis in the hands find the handpan manageable and some find it more comfortable than instruments requiring sustained grip or pressure, because the handpan stroke is brief, light and involves no holding. There is no clamping, no bar pressing, no weight bearing through the joints. That said, arthritis varies enormously in type, joints affected and activity. Inflammatory arthritis in a flare is a different situation from stable osteoarthritis in one thumb. Things that generally help: playing very quietly, using the flat pad rather than the tip, using more of the hand surface (flat hand strokes, forearm damping) to spread load, shorter sessions more often, and warmth before playing. Playing during a flare is usually a bad idea. Ask a rheumatologist or hand therapist who knows your case.
Small hands. Genuinely not a barrier. The handpan does not require reach in the way a piano or a guitar does; you move your whole hand to the note rather than stretching to it. Where hand size does matter slightly is in comfortably damping with the heel of one hand while playing with the fingers, and in some two handed patterns on very large instruments. The practical fix is instrument choice rather than technique: smaller diameter shells, and instruments with fewer, larger tone fields, are easier to navigate. If you are buying and this concerns you, play a few sizes before committing. See CUL-05.
Existing injury. Depends entirely on what and where. Players have returned to handpan after tendon repairs, fractures and nerve injuries, and players with permanent limitation in one hand play beautifully with adapted approaches. The handpan is also unusually good for asymmetric adaptation, because a single hand can carry a full melodic line while the other does simpler supporting work, or nothing at all. Mallets are an option some players use and others regard as a compromise; either way they exist.
The one thing to be firm about: this section can tell you what the instrument demands physically, which is very little. It cannot tell you whether your particular hand should be doing it. Bring the description of the movement (brief, light, repeated, low force, no grip) to someone qualified and let them judge.

2 - Posture, hearing and other bodies in the room

BOD-08What is a good playing posture, and why does lap playing cause trouble over time?#
beginner
Short answer. Aim for a stacked spine, relaxed shoulders, and the instrument close enough that both hands reach every note without leaning. Lap playing tends to pull you into sustained forward flexion with a rounded lower back and a dropped head, and it is the duration and immobility that cause problems, not the position itself.
Lap playing is the classic image of the instrument and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. The problem is what it quietly asks of you. Sitting cross legged on a flat floor tips most people’s pelvis backwards, which rounds the lumbar spine. The instrument sits low, so you look down at it, which puts the neck into flexion holding the weight of the head forward. The arms reach down and slightly out, so the shoulders round and the upper back stays flexed. Then you hold that shape, largely motionless, for 40 minutes because the playing is absorbing.
That combination (end range flexion, held statically, repeated daily) is what turns a comfortable position into a sore one over months. Individually none of it is dangerous. Cumulatively it is why long term lap players so often report lower back and neck complaints.
The fixes are unglamorous and effective.
Raise your hips. A firm cushion, a meditation stool or a folded blanket under the sitting bones tips the pelvis forward and lets the lumbar spine find its natural curve instead of collapsing. This one change does more than anything else on the list.
Raise the instrument. The higher it sits, the less you look down. A stand at or slightly above lap height, or simply a thicker cushion on your legs, reduces neck flexion considerably.
Tilt rather than crane. Tilting the far edge of the instrument down brings the layout into view without you bending your neck to see it. Ten to twenty degrees is where most players settle.
Move. The most underrated intervention. Change position every 20 minutes or so. Alternate cross legged, kneeling on a stool, sitting on a chair, standing at a tall stand. Variety beats any single perfect posture.
Check with a video, not a feeling. Everyone believes they are sitting upright. Film yourself from the side for thirty seconds. It is usually a surprise.
If sitting on the floor is genuinely uncomfortable for you, do not persist because it looks right. A chair without armrests, thighs roughly parallel to the floor, feet flat, and the instrument on a stand is a perfectly legitimate and often healthier setup.

BOD-09What stand height should I use, and how do I avoid neck strain?#
beginner
Short answer. Set the height so your forearms sit roughly level or angled very slightly downwards, elbows close to your sides, wrists near neutral, and so you can see the whole note layout with only a small tilt of the head. If you have to raise your shoulders or bend your wrists to play, it is wrong.
There is no single correct number, because it depends on your torso length, your seat height, the diameter of the instrument and how much you tilt it. Work from the body rather than from a measurement.
Seated. Sit as you will actually play. Let your arms hang, then bring the forearms up until they are roughly horizontal. That is approximately where the rim of the instrument wants to be. Slightly lower is usually more comfortable than slightly higher, because a stand set too high forces the shoulders up and the wrists into extension, which is the most reliable way to develop a sore forearm.
Standing. Roughly waist height, adjusted so you are dropping into the instrument rather than reaching down to it. Standing changes your stroke: most players unconsciously hit harder because gravity is now helping, so check your dynamics on a recording the first few times.
Neck strain specifically comes from two things, and only one of them is height.
The first is looking down. The head weighs around five kilograms and the further forward you hold it, the more work the neck extensors do to keep it there. Raising the instrument and tilting it towards you both reduce how far you need to look down. So does learning the layout well enough to stop watching your hands, which is worth working towards for musical reasons anyway.
The second is holding still. A neck held in one position for 45 minutes gets sore even in a good position. Micro breaks matter more than perfect alignment: every 20 minutes, look up, roll the shoulders back, let the arms hang.
Two practical points about stands themselves. A wobbling stand makes you tense your whole upper body to compensate without noticing, so stability is an ergonomic issue as well as a safety one. And if your instrument has bottom notes, check where the contact points land; a support directly under a tuned bottom field will mute it. See PLA-02.
If you play a lot and can afford one adjustable stand rather than two fixed ones, take the adjustable one. Being able to change height between pieces is the easiest way to stop any single posture accumulating.

BOD-10How loud is a handpan in decibels, and is it a hearing risk?#
intermediate
Short answer. For a single acoustic handpan played by hand at normal volume, roughly 70 to 90 dB(A) at the player’s ears is a reasonable expectation, with hard strikes on a loud instrument going higher. That is around the level where duration starts to matter, but for typical practice sessions it is not a serious hearing risk. Treat any single number you see quoted with suspicion, including this one.
Be sceptical about decibel figures for this instrument, because there is very little published measurement. Unlike orchestral instruments, drum kits and steelbands, the handpan has not been the subject of peer reviewed sound level surveys that we could find. Most figures circulating online come from phone apps, which are uncalibrated, weight and average differently, and are frequently out by ten decibels or more. So the honest answer is a range and a set of caveats.
Why the range is so wide. Sound pressure level depends on how hard you play (easily a 20 dB spread between a whisper stroke and a full strike), the instrument itself (large, thin, low pitched shells are much louder than small bright ones), the distance from your ears (levels fall roughly 6 dB per doubling of distance, and your ears are well under a metre away when lap playing), the room, and what you are measuring: peak, fast, slow, A weighted, C weighted, or an average over time. A percussive instrument has short peaks well above its average, and averaged levels are what matter for hearing risk.
For context, a full steelband is a genuinely hazardous environment: a 2004 study in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery by Juman, Karmody and Simeon measured levels consistently above 100 dBA at the core of the band, and found significantly worse hearing at 3, 4 and 6 kHz in steelband musicians than controls, with nine of the twelve players who had played for 20 years or more showing hearing loss against none of the seven with under ten years. A single hand struck handpan is nowhere near that, but the study is a useful reminder that tuned steel percussion can absolutely damage hearing when there is enough of it and enough hours.
The reference points that matter. NIOSH recommends a limit of 85 dBA averaged over eight hours, with a 3 dB exchange rate: 88 dBA for four hours, 91 dBA for two, 94 dBA for one. The WHO safe listening guidance uses 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week, and 90 dB for four hours a week. Put a typical practice session against those numbers and it is comfortably fine. Put six hours a day of loud playing, or a room full of handpans, against them and it stops being obviously fine.
If you actually want to know, borrow a calibrated sound level meter or a dosimeter rather than trusting an app.

BOD-11Is it more of a risk in a small room or when amplified?#
intermediate
Short answer. Yes to both, and amplification is the bigger one by far. A small hard room can add several decibels and a lot of unpleasant ring; a PA can put you into genuinely hazardous territory in a way an acoustic handpan never will on its own.
Small rooms. In a reverberant space you hear the direct sound plus a great deal of reflected sound, and the total level at your ears is higher than the same instrument outdoors. A tiled bathroom, a small concrete practice room or a bare rehearsal space will measurably raise the level and, more noticeably, extend the decay so that notes pile on top of each other. The effect is usually a few decibels rather than a transformation, but the fatigue effect is disproportionate: hard rooms are tiring to play in long before they are dangerous. Soft furnishings, a rug, a curtain or simply playing somewhere else all help. If your practice space rings unpleasantly, the reason you feel wrung out after 40 minutes may be acoustic rather than musical.
Amplification. This is where the real risk lives, and it has nothing to do with the instrument. Once a handpan goes through a microphone or pickup into a PA, monitors or in ear system, the level at your ears is set by a gain knob, not by physics. Handpan players are particularly exposed here for two reasons. First, the instrument’s own acoustic sound is quiet, so on stage there is a strong temptation to push monitors hard to hear yourself over drums, bass or a crowd. Second, handpan is often paired with amplified low frequency material (loop pedals, sub heavy backing, didgeridoo, cajón through a PA) that masks the pan and drives you to turn it up further.
At a loud gig or a festival stage, the ambient level can sit anywhere from 95 to 105 dBA regardless of what you are playing. Against the NIOSH figures in BOD-10, 100 dBA gives you roughly 15 minutes before you exceed the recommended daily dose. This is the situation that actually damages musicians’ hearing, and it damages handpan players exactly as readily as it damages drummers.
Effects and processing deserve a mention too. Heavy reverb and delay raise the average level considerably while barely changing the peaks, so a wash of reverb in headphones is louder over time than it feels. If you monitor on headphones while recording, that is a place to be disciplined.
The practical upshot: acoustic handpan in a normal room, relax. Anything with a gain stage in it, treat like any other amplified music, which means know the level and protect yourself.

BOD-12Should I use hearing protection for long sessions and sound baths?#

Short answer. For ordinary acoustic practice, generally no. For amplified playing, loud jams, festival stages, and for practitioners running back to back sound sessions with gongs and multiple instruments, yes, and musicians’ filtered earplugs rather than foam.
The decision is about dose, meaning level multiplied by time, not about whether something sounds loud in the moment. Working from the WHO and NIOSH reference points in BOD-10, an hour of moderate acoustic playing is well inside safe territory. Five hours a day, every day, at a strong dynamic on a loud instrument is a different calculation and worth taking seriously.
Where protection is clearly worth it:
- Amplified performance and rehearsal with a PA or monitors.
- Group jams, especially indoors, and especially with djembes, cajóns or a drum kit in the room. The handpan is rarely the loudest thing present.
- Festival environments, where you may be exposed for hours whether or not you are the one playing.
- Sound bath and sound therapy practitioners running several sessions a day. Gongs in particular can be very loud at close range, and the practitioner is the one person in the room getting the full dose repeatedly, day after day, while every client gets it once. If you facilitate professionally, this is an occupational exposure and deserves proper thought.
Which type. Standard foam earplugs attenuate high frequencies far more than low ones, which makes music sound muffled and, worse, tempts you to remove them. Musicians’ filtered earplugs (universal fit versions are inexpensive; custom moulded ones cost more and fit better) attenuate more evenly across the spectrum, typically in something like 9, 15 or 25 dB versions, so the music still sounds like music. For handpan specifically, the lighter filters are usually enough and preserve the overtone detail you actually need to hear to play well.
What not to do. Do not use protection as permission to play louder, which is a well documented behaviour in musicians and defeats the point. Do not rely on “I would notice if it were too loud”; noise induced hearing loss is painless and gradual, and the first thing that goes is high frequency detail, which for a handpan player is precisely the shimmer that makes the instrument beautiful.
Warning signs that your exposure is too high: ringing or buzzing after a session, muffled hearing that clears over the following hours, or needing the volume higher than you used to. Temporary threshold shift is a warning, not a harmless quirk. Repeated, it becomes permanent.

BOD-13Can I play while pregnant, or with a baby nearby?#
beginner
Short answer. Playing an acoustic handpan while pregnant is not a recognised hazard, and the levels involved are far below anything the guidance warns about. Around a baby, keep the instrument at a sensible distance, keep the volume modest, and be aware that infant ears are more vulnerable than adult ones. As always, your midwife or doctor knows your situation and this page does not.
Pregnancy. The relevant guidance is about occupational noise, and it is aimed at industrial levels. NIOSH notes that fetal hearing develops by around the twentieth week, that fetuses respond to sound by around the twenty fourth, and that very loud noise may be able to damage a developing fetus’s hearing. Its specific recommendation for pregnant workers is to avoid environments above 115 dBA, even with hearing protection in place. It also makes two points worth carrying over: hearing protection worn by the mother does not fully protect the fetus, and low frequency sound passes through the body more readily than high frequency sound, so distance from the source matters.
An acoustic handpan does not come close to 115 dBA. Ordinary playing while pregnant is not something the evidence gives you a reason to avoid, and many players continue throughout. The realistic considerations are mechanical rather than acoustic: lap playing gets awkward as pregnancy progresses, and a stand at a comfortable height, with a chair rather than a cross legged floor position, is usually the sensible adaptation. Amplified performance is the one situation where the guidance does become relevant, because that is where 100 dBA and above genuinely occurs.
Babies and small children in the room. Infant ears are more sensitive than adult ones, and paediatric guidance is correspondingly cautious. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2023 policy statement on noise exposure in infants, children and adolescents recommends, among other things, that neonatal intensive care unit noise be kept below 45 dB, and that hearing protection be used for children in noisy venues.
In practice that means: do not play with a baby directly beside or under the instrument, which is where levels are highest and where the low frequencies are most physical. A few metres away, at a modest dynamic, in a normal room, is a different situation entirely and is how most players with young children actually manage. If you are playing at a volume where an adult would raise their voice to be heard, that is too loud for a baby at close range.
Sound baths with infants present deserve particular care, because gongs and multiple instruments at close range are far louder than a single handpan.

BOD-14Is the handpan suitable for children, and from what age?#

Short answer. Yes, and it is one of the more child friendly instruments there is: no reading required, no correct notes to get wrong, immediate reward. Around five upwards for genuine playing, younger for supervised exploration. The real constraints are the weight, the cost and the fragility of the instrument, not the child.
Why it works well for children. Every note on a handpan belongs to one scale, so there is no wrong note. A child can produce a beautiful sound within seconds, which is not true of a violin or a clarinet, and that immediate success is enormously motivating. It requires no notation, no theory and no physical strength. It is quiet enough for a flat, unlike a drum kit. And it teaches rhythm, dynamics, listening and improvisation, which are genuinely valuable musical foundations.
Age. Physically, a child of around four or five can strike a handpan and make it sing. What varies is whether they can be trusted with the instrument, which matters more here than with most starter instruments. From roughly five to seven, most children can play meaningfully and take instruction. From around ten, they can work on technique in the way an adult would.
The practical constraints:
Weight and size. A typical handpan weighs somewhere in the region of three and a half to five kilograms and is 50 to 55 cm across, which is a lot on a small lap. A stand at the right height solves this and is close to essential for younger children. Smaller diameter instruments exist and are easier for small players to reach across.
Cost and fragility. This is the honest obstacle. Handpans are expensive, and they are dented by being dropped, by rings, by belt buckles and by enthusiastic hard hitting with objects. Handing a four year old a several thousand pound instrument unsupervised is not a plan. Many families start with a steel tongue drum, which costs a fraction as much, is far more robust, works on the same one scale principle and gives most of the same benefits. If the interest sticks, move up.
Technique. Children tend to hit hard, because hitting hard is fun. The instrument tolerates this better than its reputation suggests but not indefinitely, and hard striking with anything other than hands is the genuine risk to tuning. Teaching the bounce early, framed as “the quieter you play, the prettier it sounds”, works surprisingly well.
