Get your handpan

An honest buying guide for your first handpan. What to spend, which scale, how many notes, which steel, 440 vs 432, buying secondhand safely, and which makers to trust. No affiliate links, no maker sponsorship.

There is a reason this school starts with shopping rather than with playing.

The single most common way a handpan story ends is not “I could not learn it”. It is “I bought the wrong thing”. Somebody spends £250 on a rubbery painted disc from a marketplace ad and concludes the instrument is not for them. Somebody else spends £1,500 on a scale that turns out to bore them within a month. Somebody else again sends a bank transfer to an account that vanishes.

So the buying journey is part of the curriculum here, not a preamble to it.

Why you can trust this section#

I do not sell handpans. There are no affiliate links on this site, no maker sponsorships, no referral codes, and there never will be. If I recommend a thing, it is because I think it is right and for no other reason. That is the entire moat this handbook has, and I intend to keep it.

I will also tell you when I do not know, when the community disagrees, and when a figure is a rule of thumb rather than a measured fact. There is a lot of confident nonsense written about this instrument.

What I recommend, in one paragraph#

If you want the answer without the reading: buy a 9 or 10 note D Kurd, in nitrided steel or stainless, tuned to A=440, from a maker with a real trading history, for somewhere between £600 and £1,500, paid for by credit card, after watching a video of that exact instrument being played slowly note by note. If you do that, you will own a good instrument, every lesson on this site will fit it, and you will be able to sell it for most of what you paid if you change your mind.

1 - What is a handpan?

What the instrument actually is, why one note sounds like a small chord, and how it differs from a “hang drum”, a steel tongue drum and a steelpan.

You have probably arrived here having seen a video: someone sitting cross-legged with a metal flying saucer on their lap, making a sound like a harp being played inside a bell. This page is what that object actually is.

The short version#

A handpan is a convex steel shell, usually around 50 to 60 cm across, made from two hammered half shells joined at the rim. The top shell carries a domed note in the centre — the ding — and a ring of seven to nine flattened dimples around it. Each dimple is a tone field, hammered and heat treated until it rings at a specific pitch. The lower shell is mostly plain and carries one round hole, the gu, which lets the sealed air cavity resonate.

Picture two woks joined at the rim. That is genuinely the shape.

Why one note sounds like a chord#

This is the part that surprises people, and it is the thing that makes a handpan a handpan rather than a nicely tuned bowl.

Each tone field is not tuned to one pitch. It is tuned to three at once: a fundamental, an octave above it, and a fifth above that octave, all deliberately hammered into the same patch of steel. So one fingertip strike releases three consonant partials together. Meanwhile the neighbouring fields, untouched, ring sympathetically through the shell and the enclosed air.

Play three notes in sequence and you are actually hearing perhaps a dozen overlapping partials, all harmonically related, none of them clashing.

Then add the scale. Handpans are tuned to a single modal or pentatonic scale chosen to contain no harsh clashes. On most instruments there is no note that sounds wrong against any other. A complete beginner hitting things at random still produces something that hangs together.

The sealed body does one more job. It works as a Helmholtz resonator — the same physics as blowing across a bottle top. Tap the shell near the gu hole and you hear a low breathy note that belongs to the air cavity, not to any tone field. That is a real note you can play, and later in the curriculum you will.

Is it a drum?#

Formally, no. Under the standard instrument classification a drum is a membranophone: the sound comes from a stretched skin. A handpan has no skin. The steel body itself vibrates, which makes it an idiophone — the same family as bells, gongs, marimbas and the Trinidadian steelpan it descends from.

In practice it sits on the fence, and that is most of its appeal. The playing technique comes almost entirely from hand drumming: slaps, ghost notes, rim taps, palm muting, the same wrist mechanics you would see on a djembe or a darbuka. But every strike has a definite pitch, the pitches form a scale, and the obvious thing to do with them is play tunes.

The honest description is pitched percussion. That matters for how you learn it, and it is why this school teaches rhythm from the first lesson rather than treating the handpan as a slow ambient object.

Handpan, Hang, or “hang drum”?#

These three words get used interchangeably online. They are not the same thing, and getting them right will save you an awkward moment with a maker.

If you are talking to a maker, say handpan. If you are talking about a genuine PANArt instrument, say Hang. Nobody will mind if you slip, but the distinction is real and it is easy.

What it is not#

Three instruments get confused with handpans constantly, and two of them are what you will actually be shown if you search a large online marketplace.

Steel tongue drum#

The notes are tongues cut out of the shell with a saw or laser, not dimples hammered into unbroken steel. Cutting is a precise, repeatable, largely mechanical operation, which is why tongue drums cost a fraction of what handpans cost.

The sound differs accordingly. A tongue drum note is close to a single pitch with a long, pure, bell-like decay. A handpan note carries that tuned octave and fifth inside the field, so it is harmonically richer and more complex. Tongue drums also ring longer, which is lovely for slow ambient playing and a genuine problem for anything rhythmic, because the notes pile up.

Tongue drums hold their tuning almost indefinitely, tolerate knocks and heat, and take mallets happily. Handpans do none of those things.

Steelpan (steel drum)#

The Trinidadian instrument the handpan descends from, and the ancestry is direct rather than a loose resemblance. A steelpan is concave — sunk inward from an oil drum, with the notes as raised bumps inside the bowl. It is played with rubber-tipped sticks, it is loud and bright, and it is built for orchestras.

A handpan is domed outward, sealed into a closed cavity, and played with fingers. That inversion is a large part of why a handpan is so much quieter.

RAV Vast#

The one that gets closest. It is a steel tongue drum, made in Russia, but each cut tongue has several partials tuned into it rather than one, which gives it far more harmonic body than an ordinary tongue drum. Genuinely lovely, much cheaper, much tougher. Still not a handpan, and still not what this school teaches on.

How big, how heavy, how loud#

  • Diameter: most commonly around 53 cm, ranging roughly 50 to 60.
  • Weight: typically 3.5 to 5 kg for a standard shell. Heavier than it looks in videos, and you will feel it on your lap after twenty minutes.
  • Volume: quieter than almost everyone expects. It will not fill a room the way a guitar does. It is an intimate instrument, and the recordings you love were mostly made in reverberant spaces with a microphone close by.

That last point is worth sitting with, because “quieter than I imagined” is one of the three most common reasons people fall out of love with the instrument. It is not a party instrument. It is a two-people-on-a-sofa instrument.

Do I need to be able to read music?#

No, and this school assumes you cannot. A handpan is tuned to one scale, has no accidentals, and offers no way to play a note that is not physically hammered into the shell. That constraint is the single most important thing to understand about the instrument. It is what makes it immediately rewarding for a beginner, and it is what makes it demanding later, when you discover that rhythm, dynamics and phrasing are the only variables you have left.

Which is exactly where the interesting music is.

2 - Why is the Amazon one £250 and everyone says £1,500?

Where the money goes, what the cheap end of the market is actually like in 2026, and the ten second touch test that tells you what you are holding.

This is the question that brings most people to this site, usually late at night, with two browser tabs open: one showing a handpan for £249 with free delivery, the other showing one for £1,600 with a nine month wait.

Both tabs are telling the truth. Here is what is going on.

Where the money actually goes#

Four things stack up, and none of them are margin.

It is nearly all labour, and the labour is rare. Makers commonly quote forty to eighty hours of skilled work for a professional instrument. That work is not assembly, it is judgement: strike, listen, strike, listen. There is no apprenticeship system and no school. Almost every maker taught themselves over years, and the skill takes years to become reliable.

Every note is three tuning problems, not one. Each tone field needs its fundamental, its octave and its compound fifth brought into alignment, and moving one moves the others. Then the fields interact through the shell, so tuning note seven can pull note three back out. The difficulty rises faster than the note count.

Failure is built into the price. Steel under this much local stress cracks. Nobody publishes audited figures, but a loss rate somewhere around one in ten to one in five shells during forming, heat treatment or tuning is the number makers quote. A shell that fails at the tuning stage has already absorbed most of its labour.

There are no economies of scale. Even well known makers typically produce in the low hundreds of instruments a year, some far fewer. There is no production line to spread the cost of tooling, a gas furnace and a workshop across.

Add specialist steel sheet, nitriding or annealing, packaging robust enough to survive a courier, and after-sales support, and the price stops looking arbitrary.

What happens to your money, stage by stage#

  1. Two steel blanks, usually 0.8 to 1.25 mm thick. The steel itself is a modest fraction of the price, but the grade and thickness shape everything downstream.
  2. Shell forming. Each blank is sunk into a dome, historically by hammer, increasingly by hydraulic press or spinning. A press is a cost saving, not a mark of a bad instrument.
  3. Laying out and raising the tone fields. Note positions marked, then each field hammered into the geometry that produces its harmonic series.
  4. Heat treatment. Gas nitriding, or annealing for stainless. A real per-instrument cost, and often outsourced by small makers because it needs a furnace.
  5. Tuning, and tuning again. The bulk of the labour. Makers describe somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 hammer strikes across a whole instrument, each a small correction checked by ear and by spectrum analyser. The instrument is tuned, rested, and retuned, because steel relaxes.
  6. Assembly and finish. The two shells joined, then finished, oiled, and usually given a serial number.
  7. Everything that failed. And the years the maker spent ruining instruments while learning.

The price ladder in 2026#

These are 2026 figures and they move. Steel costs, freight and exchange rates have all shifted repeatedly since 2020, and different sources disagree by a few hundred pounds on where each tier begins. Use the shape of the ladder, not the exact numbers. Most makers price in euros or dollars; convert on the day.

The touch test#

Here is the ten second check that settles most of it, and you can do it with the instrument in your hands or, imperfectly, from a close photograph.

Is this a real handpan?

  • Touch the surface. Real nitrided steel feels like metal: hard, cool, slightly textured, dark grey to blue-black. Stainless feels like metal too, lighter and more silvery.
  • If it feels rubbery, plasticky, or painted, it is powder-coated cheap carbon steel — whatever the listing says. Powder coat is a thick layer sprayed on and baked. It hides poor steel, it adds mass and damping to every tone field, and it means the instrument was decorated rather than tuned.
  • Rainbow finishes, airbrushed artwork and mirror-bright chrome are almost always decoration-first instruments. There are rare exceptions from real makers. The listings under £250 are not among them.
  • Look at the note fields. Real tone fields are subtly shaped dimples with a visible dome or dip at the centre. Stamped, identical, perfectly circular depressions in a painted disc are not tone fields.
  • Strike one note and listen for three seconds. A real handpan note blooms and decays smoothly. A decorative disc thuds and dies in under a second.

Is the cheap end really that bad?#

No, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The cheap end genuinely changed through the early 2020s. Several volume producers, mostly but not only in Asia, worked out repeatable shell forming with enough hand finishing to make instruments that hold a tuning. The floor of the market rose. Ignoring that is as unhelpful as pretending the gap has closed.

What you are accepting at around £500–£700:

  • Variance between units. Two instruments from the same batch can differ audibly. This is why a video of your specific instrument matters more here than at any other price point.
  • Shorter, thinner sustain and more crosstalk between neighbouring notes.
  • Less dynamic range. These instruments often need to be struck harder to speak — which is exactly the habit you do not want to learn.
  • Limited or no service. Many volume producers will not retune, and many independent tuners decline to work on these shells. A £180 retune against a £440 instrument rarely makes sense.
  • A narrow catalogue. Mostly the popular symmetrical scales in nine to eleven notes, because those batch well. Fortunately, D Kurd is one of them.

The rule that actually matters#

It is not cheap versus expensive. It is in tune versus not in tune.

Learning any acoustic instrument is largely learning to hear. A handpan whose partials are misaligned gives you constant confusing feedback: notes that sound wrong however you strike them, fields that trigger their neighbours, sustain that dies in a second. Beginners almost always conclude that they are the problem. Some quit. Others develop a hard, forcing technique trying to make the thing speak, and then have to unlearn it.

A well made £600 instrument is a fine first handpan. A poorly tuned £600 instrument is worse than nothing.

So:

  1. Set a ceiling you are genuinely comfortable with — a handpan you feel guilty about is a handpan you play less.
  2. Within that ceiling, buy the best tuned instrument you can find, rather than the most notes or the prettiest finish.
  3. Insist on a video of that exact instrument, played slowly, note by note.
  4. Accept that if you stick with it you will probably want a second instrument within two years anyway. Almost everyone does.

Do more expensive handpans sound better?#

Up to a point, clearly yes. Past the mid range, less than you would think.

Between a £300 factory instrument and a £1,100 artisan instrument the gap is not subtle: cleaner partials, longer and smoother sustain, controlled crosstalk, better tuning stability, and a far wider dynamic range so the instrument responds to a light touch. Any listener hears that.

Between a £1,300 instrument and a £2,600 one, you are mostly buying consistency, a specific tonal character the maker is known for, harder scales executed cleanly, better after-sales support, and some reputation premium. The correlation between price and sound quality gets weak up there. There are expensive instruments a knowledgeable player would decline, and mid-priced instruments that outperform their tier.

Where high-end instruments do consistently separate themselves is at the extremes: very quiet playing, fast passages where crosstalk control matters, and close-mic’d recording where every flaw is exposed. If you play softly, record often, or perform, the money is doing something. If you play at home for pleasure, it is doing much less.

Most of the recorded handpan music people fall in love with was made on instruments nowhere near the top of the market, played through microphones and codecs that flatten most of what the extra money buys.

Will it hold its value?#

Quality instruments from established makers hold value unusually well — commonly reselling at 70 to 90% of what they cost. Cheap factory instruments lose value fast, often half or more.

What drives resale: the maker’s reputation and whether they are still trading; scale popularity (D Kurd sells in days, unusual scales can take months); condition and tuning; documentation such as a serial number and original invoice; and geography, because shipping a handpan internationally is expensive enough that your realistic market is often regional.

A mid-band instrument you keep, and that holds most of its value, often costs less over five years than a very cheap instrument you replace within twelve months. Cheap is not the same as inexpensive.

What you actually need on day one#

Two things. Genuinely, two.

  • A case. The most important accessory by a distance. Handpans are damaged in transport more than anywhere else, and a dent in a tone field is a tuning problem, not a cosmetic one. A padded soft case with a rigid base is fine for careful home use. A hard case is worth it if you travel or use public transport. Many makers include a basic bag — check whether it actually protects the surface or is just a dust cover.
  • Protective oil and a microfibre cloth, if your instrument is nitrided or raw steel. Ask your maker what they recommend for their surface, because recommendations differ and the wrong product is worse than none. Stainless needs little more than wiping down.

Everything else waits. A stand: wait until you know how you sit. A seat at the right height: worth more than you think, but later. Microphones, pedals, loopers, mallets, a second instrument: all of these will happen, and none of them should happen now.

3 - What scale should I get, and what does "D Kurd" mean?

Why a handpan has only one scale for its whole life, what D Kurd actually contains, and why this school teaches on it exclusively.

Of every decision on this page, this is the one that is permanent.

You can replace a case. You can have an instrument retuned. You cannot change its scale. A handpan has no accidentals, no keys, and no way to play a note that is not physically hammered into the steel. Whatever notes you buy are the notes you have, for as long as you own it.

That constraint is the single most important thing to understand about the instrument — and, once you have made your peace with it, the best thing about it.

What “D Kurd” actually means#

D is the root note. Kurd is the handpan world’s name for a natural minor set. Put together: D natural minor, also called D Aeolian.

In the standard nine note build, that is:

This layout is one of the very few in the handpan world that is genuinely consistent across makers. If you order a D Kurd 9 from almost anyone, you will get those notes.

Why that particular set is so useful#

Two reasons, one musical and one social.

It is complete. It contains the whole natural minor scale with no gaps, plus a repeated A at both the bottom and the top of the tone circle. That completeness gives you, at minimum, six usable chords out of nine notes:

That is enough harmony to play a very large amount of Western folk and popular music, and enough to accompany a singer convincingly. Six chords is a lot more than a handpan has any right to have.

The B♭ is the note that separates D Kurd from D Celtic and D Amara, which leave it out. It is why Kurd has the fuller harmonic palette of the two, and it is why this school teaches on Kurd.

And the ecosystem argument matters as much as the music. More handpan tutorials, tabs, backing tracks and duet arrangements exist for D Kurd than for any other scale, by a wide margin. If you want to learn from anyone other than me, D Kurd removes a layer of friction. It is also the easiest scale to sell on, because demand for it is permanent.

Why this school teaches on one scale only#

Most handpan lessons online are taught in the abstract: “play the third note of your scale”, “move to the fifth”. That sentence is meaningless when you are a beginner looking down at eight identical-looking dimples in a piece of steel, and it is the wall I hit myself.

By teaching on one specific instrument, I can say “strike the B♭, the one at the bottom right” and you can just do it. What you see on my screen is what is in your lap. No mental translation, no counting round the circle, no theory homework before you can make a sound.

That is worth more to a beginner than the freedom to pick any scale. So the curriculum here is built on a 9 or 10 note D Kurd, and core lessons use only the shared nine notes so that a 9 note owner never misses anything.

How to choose, if you want to choose for yourself#

If you would rather not simply take my recommendation, here is the process that actually works.

1. Listen first, read names later. Spend an evening on recordings, ideally solo playing rather than heavily produced tracks. Note which ones you replay. Do not look at the scale names while you do it — names bias you towards what sounds exotic on paper rather than what you enjoy hearing. Check afterwards what the ones you liked were.

2. Play a long demo in the background for an hour while you do something else. You are going to hear this scale for hundreds of hours. If you are still happy at the end of the hour, that is a real signal. Twenty-second clips tell you nothing.

3. Notice the mood you keep returning to. Handpan scales sort roughly into families:

4. Be honest about why you are buying. For personal calm and sound work, a pentatonic or a low Celtic will serve you better than a chord-rich Kurd. To write music, accompany singing, or play with other people, you want a complete seven note scale.

5. Accept that you cannot get this perfect. Most players who stick with the instrument own more than one within a few years. The first instrument’s job is to be good enough that you keep playing it, not to be your final answer.

The one genuinely bad way to choose is by reading a list of scale descriptions and picking the most evocative adjective. Every scale is described as mystical, meditative and deeply moving by somebody selling it.

Minor or major?#

Minor, for most people, most of the time.

Musically, minor sets tend to sound settled even when you play them at random, because the intervals between adjacent tone fields resolve pleasantly. Culturally, the handpan sound people fell in love with is overwhelmingly minor. If you buy a major instrument expecting that handpan sound, you may be quietly disappointed for reasons you cannot articulate.

Minor is also more versatile than it looks. A D Kurd is not restricted to sad music — it contains F major, B♭ major and C major, so you can play warm, resolved, even triumphant progressions on it. A major instrument has a harder time sounding genuinely dark.

Buy major if you write or sing songs and want a tonic that resolves properly, if you play for children or celebrations, or if you find minor handpan recordings gloomy rather than beautiful. Trust that reaction if you have it.

Nothing about a minor handpan is technically harder than a major one. The fields are the same size and the layout logic is identical.

Does the scale limit what I can play?#

Yes, absolutely and permanently. You cannot modulate to a distant key, play a chromatic passing note you do not have, or play a piece written in E♭ without rewriting it.

Now the encouraging part. Most folk melodies, a great deal of pop, and almost all ambient music sits inside a single seven note scale and moves between three or four chords. A D Kurd handles the entire universe of D minor and F major and their close relations, which is enormous.

When a melody does not fit, you have three moves, and you will learn all of them in the curriculum:

  • Fold it into range. If a phrase goes above your top note, drop that phrase an octave. It sounds deliberate more often than you would expect.
  • Substitute. A missing note can usually be replaced by the note a third above or below within the scale, and the ear accepts it.
  • Imply. A chord you lack can be suggested by playing its other members and letting context do the work. Handpan players do this constantly.

The real limitation is not repertoire. It is collaboration: playing with other musicians means they come to your key or you do not play.

One warning about scale names#

Handpan scale naming is not standardised. “Integral” from one maker can be a materially different note set from another maker’s “Integral”. Names like Annaziska, Aeolian and Kurd overlap. Sabye and Ashakiran are essentially the same idea under two labels.

Always get the actual note list in writing before you pay. A maker who knows what they are doing will send it happily. D Kurd is one of the few names you can more or less trust on sight, which is one more small argument in its favour.

4 - How many notes should my first handpan have?

Nine or ten, and why more is usually worse. The physics of a fixed shell, what bottom notes really cost you, and why note count is a marketing number.

Short answer: nine or ten on the top shell. If you want a number and not an argument, that is the number.

Here is why, and here is what the sellers pushing twelve, fourteen and seventeen note instruments are not telling you.

The physics sets the trade-off#

A handpan top shell is a fixed area, most commonly around 53 cm across. Every note you add takes space away from the others.

Smaller tone fields mean shorter sustain, thinner tone, and more interaction between neighbours, because the fields sit closer together. This is why a well made nine note instrument frequently sounds better than a poorly executed twelve note one, and why “more notes” is not a quality metric.

The bands, honestly#

Eight notes (ding plus seven). Generous, resonant tone fields. Enough for a great deal of music. Often cheaper and lighter. You will feel the top-end limit within a year or so.

Nine or ten notes. The most common configuration sold to first-time buyers, and for good reason. Enough range to play most tutorial material and most of what you hear online, without squeezing the fields. This is what this school is built on.

Eleven or twelve notes on top. More melodic possibility, generally a higher price — as a rough guide, makers often add £80 to £240 per extra note — and a real demand on the maker’s skill to keep clean. Worth it from a maker who does it well. A liability from one who does not.

Bottom notes. Many instruments add three or four notes underneath. These extend range without crowding the top, which sounds like a free lunch and is not: they are awkward for a beginner to reach, they add cost and weight, and they change how you sit. They are a second instrument feature, not a first instrument feature.

The tenth note on a D Kurd#

On a D Kurd, the tenth note is a high C5 at the top of the range. D Kurd 10 is therefore: D3 / A3 B♭3 C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4 C5.

It is a genuinely nice note. It gives melodies somewhere to go at the top, and it makes the C major chord available in two octaves.

But it is not a note you need in your first year, and everything in this school’s core curriculum is built on the shared nine so that a 9 note owner never misses anything. Where the C5 opens up a nicer variation, I mark it as a bonus and show the 9 note version first.

Two cautions#

Note count is a marketing number. Low-cost sellers lean on it heavily because it is easy to advertise and impossible to assess from a listing. “17 notes!” in a title is a warning sign, not a feature, at the bottom of the market.

More notes is not more music. Most of the recorded handpan music people fall in love with uses a handful of notes. Range is not the constraint on a beginner. Technique and rhythm are.

I say this as someone who spent years teaching darbuka, an instrument with essentially three sounds, on which people play for a lifetime without running out of things to say.

When you will actually want more#

Boredom with a handpan arrives in one of three ways, and only one of them is fixed by buying notes.

  • You have run out of chords. Real, and it hits pentatonic owners hardest. D Kurd gives you six triads, so this will take you a long time.
  • You have run out of range. Nine notes covering an octave and a bit means melodies keep landing in the same place. This is the genuine argument for ten and twelve note instruments, and for bottom notes: once you can hold a low root under a melody, the same nine top notes suddenly have twice as much to say.
  • You have run out of ideas, not notes. Far more common than players admit, and buying another instrument does not fix it. If you find yourself playing the same four-bar loop every time you sit down, the problem is repertoire and technique. Learning a few named techniques, some rhythmic vocabulary and two or three actual pieces will revive an instrument you were about to sell.

That third one is what this school exists to prevent.

5 - Steel types explained

Nitrided, stainless, Ember Steel and raw carbon steel. What each one sounds like, which ones rust, and why the magnet test tells you nothing.

There are two questions hiding in “which steel”. One is about sound. The other is about how much of your life you want to spend wiping an instrument down.

They have different answers, and it is worth separating them.

The three materials#

These are genuinely different materials, not three finishes on one material.

Raw carbon steel#

Untreated low carbon deep-drawing steel — usually DC04 — with nothing done to the surface beyond perhaps oil or paint.

It is soft, which makes it forgiving to hammer and quick to tune, and it gives a warm, slightly dark tone. It will also rust if you leave a fingerprint on it overnight in a humid room. Very few makers sell raw instruments as a mainstream product.

For a first instrument: avoid. Not because it sounds bad, but because learning an instrument and simultaneously learning to fight corrosion is a miserable combination, and because the cheap end of the market uses raw steel under powder coating precisely to hide what it is.

Nitrided steel#

The historical mainstream, going back to PANArt. The finished shell is held in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere at roughly 500–580 °C so nitrogen diffuses into the surface and forms hard iron nitrides. The result is a hard, dark grey to blue-black skin over a still-ductile core.

The clever part is that this runs below the temperature at which the steel would change phase, so there is no quench and almost no distortion — essential when your workpiece is a 1 mm hemisphere that has to stay round. The hardening is a surface effect, so the core stays soft enough to take a hammer.

Sound: percussive, ceramic, sometimes described as gong-like. A defined attack and a decay that is shorter and cleaner than stainless. Good note separation.

Rust: much better than raw, but this is a coating, not an alloy. Scratch through it, or leave sweat on it, and rust can start. The industry has become notably more candid about this — one well known maker withdrew their rust-free guarantee on nitrided DC04 in late 2023, saying plainly that buyers may encounter rust spots despite protective measures. That is honesty, not a defect.

The blue-black colour on many nitrided instruments comes from a post-oxidation step, not from the nitriding itself.

Stainless steel#

Typically AISI 430 or a maker’s proprietary variant. It resists corrosion through the chromium in the alloy rather than through a surface layer, so a scratch heals itself. Virtually rustproof in ordinary conditions.

Sound: usually longer sustaining, brighter, with a softer attack and more harmonic layering. Critics of the brighter grades describe them as tinny or wild, and long sustain has a real cost: notes overlap more, so fast rhythmic playing can turn into a wash.

“Ember Steel”#

Ember Steel is a stainless formulation introduced by Ayasa Instruments in 2020, positioned between conventional nitrided DC04 and ordinary 430 stainless. It needs substantially higher annealing temperatures than nitrided work, which makes it a more demanding material to build with. The claimed character is long but controlled sustain with good note isolation — longer than nitrided, less wild than plain stainless. It does not rust in normal use and does not need oiling.

How the steel actually changes the sound#

The underlying mechanism is internal damping. Every time the steel flexes, a fraction of the energy becomes heat inside the metal rather than sound in the air. Alloys and heat treatments that lose less energy per cycle ring longer.

Which should you buy?#

For this school and for most beginners: nitrided or a good stainless. Either is right.

Choose nitrided if you are drawn to rhythmic playing, want notes to articulate cleanly and separately, and do not mind wiping the instrument down after each session and oiling it occasionally.

Choose stainless or Ember if you want long sustain, play slowly and ambiently, live somewhere humid or coastal, have sweaty hands, or simply know yourself well enough to know you will not maintain anything.

Since this curriculum teaches rhythm from lesson one, I have a mild preference for nitrided. It is genuinely mild. Do not let it override an instrument that sounds better to you.

Which rusts, and how badly#

The difference is where the protection lives. Stainless protects itself through its bulk chemistry: chromium forms a self-repairing passive oxide film, so a scratch heals. Nitriding protects through a surface layer. Break the layer and the ordinary low carbon steel underneath behaves like ordinary low carbon steel.

In practice, nitrided instruments are fine for most owners in most climates if they are wiped down after playing and oiled occasionally. The situations that cause trouble are consistent:

What actually causes rust

  • Sweaty hands, especially salty sweat, left on the surface after a session.
  • Coastal air. Salt-laden humidity attacks nitrided surfaces persistently.
  • Condensation from bringing a cold instrument into a warm room and shutting it in a case.
  • Water pooling inside the shell through the gu — the part nobody inspects.
  • Wear at the ding and at the note centres where hands repeatedly land, slowly polishing the hardened layer away.

Stainless owners are not entirely exempt: ferritic stainless can pick up surface staining from iron particles or hard water, which looks like rust but sits on top of an intact surface and usually cleans off.

The one thing that damages every type is neglecting the inside. Air moves in and out of the gu constantly, moisture comes with it, and there is no easy way to wipe the interior. Storing the instrument port-down in a dry place, and never sealing a damp instrument in a case, does more good than any oil.

Oils, lacquers and paint#

Oils are the standard maintenance layer for nitrided and raw instruments: a molecular film that keeps water and sweat off the steel. The technique points that matter are that the film should be very thin, applied to a clean dry surface, and buffed off rather than left sitting. A thick oil layer collects dust, goes gummy, and audibly damps the high partials.

Which specific oil is genuinely contested, and it is a topic where confident advice outruns evidence. Follow your maker’s recommendation, because they know what their surface treatment tolerates.

Lacquers and clear coats applied by the maker at the factory are generally fine. Applying one yourself is a bad idea: coating thickness has a direct acoustic cost, uneven application detunes fields unevenly, and most coatings cannot be removed later without abrasives that will take the tuning with them.

Paint on tone fields adds mass and damping, flattens the notes and shortens sustain. A maker who paints and then tunes has accounted for it. Paint added after tuning has not been accounted for at all — which brings us back to the airbrushed £200 discs on the marketplace.

The general principle: any layer you add is part of the vibrating system.

How thick is the steel, and does it matter?#

Most shells start from sheet somewhere around 0.8 to 1.25 mm, with about 1 mm the common reference point.

It matters for four reasons: thicker sheet is stiffer, so a given pitch needs a larger field; hammering spends thickness, so thinner sheet leaves the tuner less room to correct partials and less headroom for a future retune; thicker sheet generally sustains longer; and thickness is one of the main levers on weight.

Do not read thickness as a quality metric. It is a design choice made in combination with steel type, shell size and target scale. A maker who has settled on 0.9 mm for a high-register instrument has probably thought about it more carefully than someone quoting a number as a selling point.

How can I tell what my instrument is made of?#

Ask the maker, and check your paperwork. There is no reliable home test.

What does help:

  • Documentation. Most reputable makers state the material on the invoice, the product page, or a tuning report. This is the primary source and it is usually right.
  • Colour and finish. Nitrided is typically dark grey to blue-black, sometimes with a faint blue or purple sheen. Stainless is usually a lighter, greyer, more metallic silver. Suggestive, not proof.
  • Rust behaviour over time. The most decisive everyday evidence. Small orange spots where your hands sit means carbon steel with a surface treatment.

If the instrument is secondhand with no history and the maker is unknown, treat it as nitrided for care purposes: wipe it after playing, oil it occasionally. That regime is harmless on stainless and necessary on everything else.

6 - 440 Hz or 432 Hz?

What the two tunings actually are, what is true and untrue about the history and the health claims, and why I recommend 440 for learners.

This is the spec where the marketing is thickest, so let me be direct about what is true, what is false, and what actually affects your decision.

My recommendation: buy A=440 unless you have a specific reason not to.

What the numbers mean#

A concert pitch reference fixes one note, and every other note follows from it. A=440 Hz means the A above middle C vibrates 440 times a second.

A=432 Hz is about 32 cents lower — roughly a third of a semitone. For scale: a cent is a hundredth of a semitone, most listeners can detect a difference of about 5 to 10 cents on a sustained tone, 20 cents is clearly audible, and 50 cents is a quarter tone. So 32 cents is a real, noticeable difference, but it is much smaller than a semitone.

What is true about the history#

440 is a convention that won, not a discovery. Before the twentieth century concert pitch varied enormously — from around A=376 Hz on a French organ of 1700 to about A=507 Hz at Halberstadt in 1361. France legislated A=435 in 1859, partly because singers complained about pitch inflation. A=440 was recommended at an international conference in London in 1939 and confirmed by the ISO in 1955.

432 has two separate origin stories, and both are messier than they are usually told. Joseph Sauveur’s “scientific pitch” around 1700 fixed middle C at exactly 256 Hz for mathematical tidiness, which puts A at about 430.5 Hz — not 432. Separately, Verdi campaigned for standardisation in Italy. He actually advocated matching France at 435; when the Italian government’s commission proposed 432 for mathematical convenience, he accepted it, calling the difference almost imperceptible. Italy decreed 432 in 1884.

So “Verdi tuning” is a real historical episode. But Verdi’s own preference was 435, and he treated the difference as trivial.

What is not true#

The frequently repeated link to the Schumann resonance does not survive checking. That resonance is about 7.83 Hz and has no clean arithmetic relationship to 432.

There is no peer-reviewed evidence that 432 Hz has therapeutic properties that other tunings lack. Not that it does nothing — music does a great deal for people — but that no property has been demonstrated for 432 specifically that neighbouring tunings do not share.

The reason that actually matters#

Here is the practical consequence, and it is permanent:

A handpan cannot be retuned to a different reference pitch. It is not like a guitar. If you buy an instrument at A=432, you have bought a different instrument, for good.

An A=432 handpan will not play in tune with:

  • Any recording, backing track or drone you find online
  • Any tutorial video, including every lesson on this site
  • A piano, a guitar, or any other musician who has not specifically retuned
  • Another handpan at 440, including your own second instrument later

That is the whole argument. It is not about which sounds better. It is about whether your instrument can join in.

For a learner especially, this is decisive. You will want to play along with things. You will want a drone under your practice. You will want to sit in with a friend. At 440, all of that just works.

Two more practical notes#

Price. Some makers charge a small premium for 432 because it is less common. Many charge the same. If someone charges a large premium and explains it with frequency claims, that tells you something about the seller.

Resale. 440 instruments sell faster and to more people. A 432 instrument in an unusual scale is a slow sale.

When 432 is the right choice#

Genuinely, there are cases:

  • You already own a 432 instrument and want a matching second one.
  • You work in sound therapy or meditation settings where clients or colleagues have settled on 432, and playing with them matters more than playing with recordings.
  • You have listened to both properly, side by side, on the same maker’s instruments, and you simply prefer it — knowing exactly what you are trading away.

That last one is the honest version, and it is fine.

A footnote for the curious#

Almost every handpan is built in twelve-tone equal temperament, with each note’s fundamental placed at its standard frequency. But within each note, the tuner aims at pure ratios: the octave partial exactly twice the fundamental, the compound fifth exactly three times it.

So a handpan is equal tempered horizontally and justly intoned vertically, at the same time. That is part of why it sounds subtly more consonant than the same notes on a piano: play a fifth, and the compound fifth partial of the lower note lands very close to a partial of the upper note, and they lock.

PANArt eventually abandoned an external reference altogether — from 2010 the Free Integral Hang was freed from the 440 standard and each instrument was attuned to itself. A lovely idea, and completely impractical for a beginner who wants to play along with things.

7 - Buying secondhand safely

The secondhand market is the best value in handpans and the easiest place to lose £1,500. The inspection, the red flags, the payment rule, and what to do if it goes wrong.

My own instrument came off Facebook Marketplace. The secondhand market is genuinely the best value in handpans, and I would recommend it to almost anyone — with one condition attached, which is the payment rule at the bottom of this page.

Why used works well here#

A handpan has no moving parts, no consumables and no electronics. A well cared for instrument from a good maker at ten years old can be indistinguishable from new.

Meanwhile the discount is real: instruments from established makers commonly resell at 70 to 90% of retail, and mid-range instruments rather lower. Used is also the only realistic route to instruments from makers who have long lead times, have stopped producing, or have closed.

Where used is less attractive: at the very bottom of the market the saving is small and you lose any warranty, so a new budget instrument is usually the better buy. Used is also weaker if you need an unusual scale — though D Kurd appears constantly, which is one more argument for it.

The risk is fraud, not wear#

Handpans are close to a perfect fraud target. They are expensive, bought sight unseen from strangers, by buyers who are often new and cannot spot a fake listing. Supply constraints make “an available instrument right now” feel like luck, and the emotional pull of the instrument makes people want to believe.

Almost every case follows one of five patterns:

  1. The instrument that does not exist. A listing with photographs lifted from a genuine maker or another sale. Payment requested by a method with no recovery. Nothing ships. By far the most common.
  2. The cloned maker website. A copy of a real maker’s site on a slightly different domain, taking orders that never reach the maker. Same for cloned social accounts using a maker’s name and logo.
  3. The impersonated seller in your DMs. You post that you are looking for an instrument; you get a private message offering exactly that, at a very good price, from an account created recently.
  4. Misrepresentation rather than theft. The instrument arrives, but it is a mass-produced shell sold as artisan work, or an unnamed instrument sold as a known maker’s, or something well out of tune sold as “perfect condition”.
  5. The overpriced flip. Not fraud exactly: a reseller buying at retail and listing at a large premium, relying on you not knowing the new price or how short the current waiting list actually is.

The red flags#

Any single one of these should stop the transaction.

On price. A price well below market is the single most reliable indicator. A sought-after maker’s instrument at half the going rate is not a bargain, it is bait. Learn the going rate before you shop, so you can recognise it.

On the instrument.

  • No video of the specific instrument being played — only stock or promotional footage.
  • Photographs that appear elsewhere online. Reverse image search every single one, on more than one search engine. Scammers reuse images for months.
  • Photographs that are oddly low resolution, heavily cropped, or all from one angle.
  • Vague description: no maker, no scale, no note layout, no serial number, no year.
  • Excuses when you ask for a fresh video showing a specific detail, or a live call.

On the seller.

  • An account created recently, or with no post history and no engagement in handpan groups.
  • A YouTube channel with one upload, created days ago.
  • A website with no verifiable trading history, a very recent domain registration, no physical address, contact only by a form.
  • A site that is a near-copy of a real maker’s on a different domain.
  • Unsolicited private messages offering exactly what you posted about wanting.

On the transaction.

  • Any pressure to decide quickly. Another buyer waiting; price only good today; they are about to travel.
  • Insistence on PayPal friends and family, bank or wire transfer, Western Union, Zelle, Venmo, gift cards or cryptocurrency. This is the decisive flag. There is no legitimate reason for a stranger to require an irreversible payment method for a purchase this size.
  • A request to move off the platform where you found them, so marketplace protection no longer applies.
  • Elaborate personal reasons why an in-person viewing cannot happen: illness, a bereavement, a sudden relocation, selling on behalf of a friend.
  • A shipping address that changes after you agree.

How to verify a seller#

Live video is the strongest single test, and it is free. Ask for a video call where the seller plays the instrument, holds up a piece of paper with your name and today’s date on it, and shows the underside and the gu. Scammers overwhelmingly refuse, stall, or produce a pre-recorded clip. Genuine private sellers occasionally find it a slightly odd request and almost always agree.

Go through the maker. This is the check most buyers forget and it is often conclusive. Email the maker with the serial number and the photographs and ask whether the instrument is genuinely theirs. Most keep records and are happy to confirm. They also want to know if their name or website is being misused.

Prefer channels with accountability. A maker’s own site, an established retailer, a maker’s certified pre-owned scheme, or a moderated community sale group all reduce risk substantially compared with an open marketplace or a direct message.

The inspection, in person#

Give yourself ten unhurried minutes. If the seller will not let you take them, that is itself information.

The ten minute check

  • Look before you play. Sight along the surface from eye level with light raking across it. Dents and flat spots in tone fields show up in reflections far more clearly than head-on.
  • Check the seam where the two shells join, for gaps, lifting or cracked adhesive.
  • Shine a phone torch into the gu. Look for rust, moisture or debris. Interior rust from stored damp is the common hidden fault, and it is structural. Pitting, flaking or bubbling is a reason to walk away; light surface bloom on the outside is cosmetic and treatable.
  • Single notes, slowly. Strike each note once with a relaxed fingertip and let it ring out completely. Listen for clean pitch, even volume, and a decay that fades smoothly rather than stuttering.
  • Tuner check. A chromatic tuner app is crude — it usually reads only the fundamental — but it catches gross problems. Within about five cents is normal and inaudible in context. Consistent deviations of ten cents or more mean it needs retuning: £120 to £240 plus freight. Negotiate on that basis.
  • Crosstalk test. Strike one note and immediately damp it with your palm. If a neighbour is still ringing loudly, note which pair. A little is normal and desirable. A lot is a defect.
  • Play as quietly as you possibly can. Most beginners test instruments too loudly. A good instrument responds to a whisper. A poor one needs to be hit.
  • Ergonomics. Sit as you would at home. Can you reach the far notes? Does the rim dig into your forearms? How heavy is it after two minutes on your lap?
  • Ask the awkward questions. When was it last tuned? Has it ever been dropped? Is there a serial number? Who made it, and can they confirm it?

If you are meeting a private seller, meet somewhere public or bring someone with you, and never let enthusiasm rush you.

Buying remotely#

Demand: a fresh video of that exact instrument played slowly note by note with something proving recency in shot; close photographs of every tone field, the seam, the gu interior and the serial number; the original invoice or order confirmation, with names redacted if they prefer.

Then match the details. Compare the instrument in the video with the one in the photographs — same scratches, same finish, same note layout, same background. Mismatches mean photographs from a different instrument.

Opening around 10 to 15% below the asking price is normal in this market.

Provenance#

Ask for, and independently verify:

  • Serial number, with a photograph of it in place. Most established makers stamp or engrave one, commonly near the gu or on the rim.
  • Maker, model, scale, note layout, year.
  • Original invoice, for anything bought new in the last decade.
  • Ownership history. How long have they had it, did they buy it new, from whom, why are they selling? Vague or shifting answers are meaningful.
  • Service history. Retuned? By whom, when? Ever dropped or dented?

Then email the maker. This single email defeats most misrepresentation. Some makers will also tell you whether an instrument has been reported stolen — rare, but handpans do get stolen from cars and venues, and buying one however innocently can mean losing both the instrument and the money.

If there is no serial number and no paperwork — common for older or small maker instruments — you are relying on the sound, the physical inspection and the seller’s verifiability. Not automatically a reason to walk away, but a reason to pay less and to use a protected payment method.

The payment rule#

This is the most consequential decision on the whole page.

If it goes wrong#

Speed matters more than anything else.

In the first hour. Send nothing more — not a “final payment to release shipping”, not a customs fee, not a courier charge. Follow-on demands are part of the same fraud. Then screenshot everything: the listing, the whole message thread, the profile, the website, the payment confirmation, the URLs. Fraudulent listings vanish quickly.

In the first day. Contact your bank or card issuer and say the word fraud. Ask specifically about chargeback and, in the UK, Section 75. Open a PayPal dispute if you paid goods and services. Report to the platform, and to the domain registrar or host if it is a cloned site. Tell the maker being impersonated — they will want to warn others and can help establish the listing was fake.

In the first week. Report it formally: Action Fraud in the UK; IC3 and the FTC in the US; your national consumer authority in the EU, and the European Consumer Centres network for cross-border purchases. Reports rarely recover money directly, but they build the case that occasionally does.

Then post a factual warning in the handpan groups — what happened, with dates, screenshots and account names, without speculation or abuse. Communities pass these round quickly and it is the main reason repeat scammers get shut out.

8 - Which makers to trust, waiting lists, and budgets

How to find makers, what a good one looks like, what lead times are really like in 2026, what to ask before you pay, and how to test the water before you spend anything.

I am not going to rank makers, and I am not going to tell you who is best.

Partly because it would go out of date within a year. Mostly because the moment this site starts sending traffic to particular workshops, the buying advice above stops being trustworthy — and its credibility is the only thing this whole section has.

So instead: how to find makers, what a good one looks like, and exactly what to ask.

How many makers are there?#

Somewhere in the low hundreds worldwide in 2026, across forty or more countries. Counting is genuinely difficult because the category has no boundary. Public directories list on the order of a hundred; handpan publications put the figure above two hundred once small solo builders are included. Both are defensible.

Roughly: a few dozen with long, well documented track records; a larger tail of newer small workshops; and a separate group of volume producers making instruments in the hundreds or thousands.

Where to look#

  • Maker directories. Several exist and let you filter by price, country and stated lead time. A directory is a starting point, not an endorsement, and most of them say so.
  • Community groups. The large general Facebook handpan groups, the dedicated swap-and-sale groups, the r/handpan subreddit, and forum communities. This is where you find out what owning a maker’s instrument is actually like three years later, which is the thing you cannot get anywhere else.
  • Festivals and gatherings. The fastest way to compare many makers at once and to meet builders directly. If one is within reach of you, go.
  • Specialist retailers. Shops stocking several makers can be useful, and some offer trial periods. You pay a margin for it.

What a good maker looks like#

Since I will not name names, here is the specification. Look for:

Signs of a maker worth buying from

  • Several years of trading, with a visible catalogue of instruments over time rather than a handful of hero shots.
  • Videos that show single notes, slowly, not just atmospheric demos with reverb over the top. A maker confident in their tuning will show you the tuning.
  • Clear, specific statements about steel and treatment. Grade, thickness, process. Vagueness here is a real warning sign.
  • A written policy on tuning and repairs. What it costs, who pays freight, whether there is a warranty period on a new instrument drifting.
  • Traceable owners who will talk about the instrument three years on.
  • Answers that are clear, specific and unhurried. How a maker answers is itself information: clear answers correlate strongly with clear instruments.

Waiting lists: much less dramatic than you have read#

A lot of what is written online about handpan waiting lists is a decade out of date, and it is worth knowing that before you panic-buy from the first available seller.

In the early years, demand vastly outstripped supply. PANArt famously stopped taking orders and asked people to write letters. Some later makers accumulated lists in the thousands, and one well known American maker ran a lottery so a new applicant had some chance rather than joining a queue years long. Those stories are still repeated as though they describe the present market.

They largely do not. The number of makers grew enormously through the 2010s and 2020s, volume producers entered at the bottom, and forming techniques improved. Supply caught up with demand for all but the most sought-after names.

What you will actually meet in 2026:

Typical lead times in 2026: volume producers ship from stock in days to a few weeks. Mid-range makers often have stock available immediately, or build in one to three months. Established artisan makers commonly quote six to twelve weeks; a smaller number quote six months to a year for a custom order.

Ask for the current lead time in writing, rather than trusting the figure on a website, which is often stale.

How to contact a maker#

Email or the contact form on their own site. Politely and briefly. Makers are usually one or two people who spend their day hammering, so a slow reply is not rudeness.

A workable first message: what you are looking for (scale, note count, or simply “a first instrument, open to suggestions”), your country, your budget range, and when you would like it. Ask them to point you at what they have or can build.

Then the questions that matter:

  • Steel and treatment. What steel, what thickness, nitrided or stainless or raw?
  • Lead time, in writing. Current, not the website figure.
  • Total landed cost. Instrument, case, packing, shipping, insurance, and who is liable for import duty and VAT. Cross-border orders regularly surprise people with a customs bill.
  • A video of that exact instrument. For stock items this is non-negotiable. Ask for slow single notes as well as any musical demo.
  • Tuning policy. Do they retune their own instruments later? What does it cost, who pays freight, and is there a warranty period on a new instrument’s tuning drifting?
  • Damage in transit. Is shipping insured, and who claims?
  • Returns. Is there a trial period? Under what conditions, and who pays return shipping?
  • Payment. What methods, and is a protected method available?
  • Serial number and documentation. Useful later, for resale and for provenance.

Deposits and terms#

For a built-to-order instrument, a deposit of roughly 20 to 50% with the balance before shipping is normal. Deposits exist for a real reason: a maker building a custom instrument buys steel, books furnace time and commits weeks of labour to a specification that may suit nobody else if you walk away.

Get the terms in an email you keep:

  • The amount and the schedule. Deposit now, balance on completion or before shipping. Staged thirds are also common.
  • What the deposit buys. A specific build slot, scale, note layout, shell type.
  • A stated lead time, and what happens if it slips substantially.
  • Refund conditions. Refundable if you cancel? Refunded in full if the maker cannot deliver? Transferable to a different instrument or another buyer?
  • What happens if you do not like the finished instrument. With a custom build the honest answer is often “very little” — which is exactly why stock purchases are lower risk for a first instrument.
  • Who bears transit damage.

Warning signs. A demand for full payment up front by bank transfer or cryptocurrency from someone you cannot verify is the single most common shape of a handpan scam. A refusal to put terms in writing is a problem however friendly the correspondence has been. So is a deposit far above the norm from a maker with no track record.

If a maker goes quiet#

Most of the time this is not fraud. Small workshops are one or two people. Illness, injury (repetitive strain is an occupational hazard in this trade), a furnace failure, a house move or simple overcommitment can all stall a build for months. Silence is a customer service failure long before it is evidence of theft.

A sensible escalation:

  1. Send a short, dated, factual email. The order, the amount paid, the agreed lead time, a request for a revised date. Civil. Keep a copy.
  2. Wait a reasonable interval, chase once more, and say plainly what you will do next.
  3. Check your payment protection deadlines now, not later. PayPal goods and services normally requires a dispute within 180 days of payment. Card chargeback schemes typically require a claim within about 120 days. UK Section 75 can be pursued much later.
  4. Ask the community, carefully. Post factually: what you ordered, when, what was agreed, what has happened. Do not accuse. Other customers will often tell you whether it is a general delay or something worse — and makers frequently reappear when a thread starts.
  5. Formal routes. Consumer protection bodies in the maker’s country, small claims procedures, the European Consumer Centres network for cross-border purchases within the EU. Slow, and worth it mainly for large sums.

If the business has genuinely closed, your instrument may still be serviceable. Independent tuners and other makers will often work on another maker’s instrument, though some decline — particularly for mass-produced shells. Ask before assuming.

Prevention is most of the answer: buy from stock rather than commissioning where you can, pay by a protected method, keep the paper trail, and prefer makers with several years of visible history over new names offering unusually attractive terms.

Before you spend anything: test the water#

The reassuring news first. The handpan has an unusually high stick-rate compared with most instruments. It is immediately rewarding, it is tuned to a single scale so nothing you play sounds wrong, and it needs no theory to start.

People who abandon it usually do so for one of three reasons: they bought a badly tuned instrument; they bought a scale they grew tired of; or they expected it to fill a room the way a guitar does and found it quieter and more intimate than they imagined.

All three are avoidable, and the cheapest way to avoid them is to play some first.

  • Rental. A number of European and North American shops rent instruments, often for two to four weeks, and commonly credit some or all of the fee against a purchase. As an indication of shape rather than a quote: one European retailer in 2026 listed roughly €140 for fourteen days rising to about €250 for thirty, credited in full on purchase. Terms vary widely.
  • Meetups and festivals. The best option if one is within reach. The culture at handpan gatherings is generous — people hand you their instruments. An afternoon at one teaches you what you like about tone, weight and scale in a way months of YouTube cannot.
  • Shops and maker visits. Some welcome visitors by appointment. If you are anywhere near one, go.
  • Borrow. Local groups and community boards often have players willing to meet.

During a trial, pay attention to: do you reach for it without deciding to? Does the scale still please you after two weeks? Does playing leave your hands or shoulders sore — which would suggest technique or ergonomics worth sorting out early?

If none of that is available to you, the lower-risk purchase is a well reviewed instrument in the middle of the market, from a maker with a real returns policy, bought with a payment method that protects you.

And then stop optimising#

This is the last page of the buying guide, so let me say the thing the rest of it has been building towards.

There is a point at which more research stops helping. Buy above the danger zone, buy from someone accountable, and then stop reading about handpans and go and practise. The instrument in your hands, played daily, will teach you more in a month than another fortnight of comparison shopping ever will.
